Due to the global effects of climate change numerous infectious diseases are increasingly spreading to regions that were previously hardly or only slightly affected. As ocular involvement is possible in many of these infectious diseases, we must also adapt to new pathogens and clinical pictures in Germany in the medium to long term. Using selected bacterial, viral and mycotic pathogens and diseases as examples, the causes of the increase in dissemination and the consequences for ophthalmology are presented.

Background: Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini show potential for patient health education, but concerns about their accuracy require careful evaluation. This study evaluates the readability and accuracy of ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini in answering questions about retinal detachment.

Methods: Comparative study analyzing responses from ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini to 13 retinal detachment questions, categorized by difficulty levels (D1, D2, D3).

The selection of ornamental stones for specific applications requires technical guidance since it should be based on the durability, service life, and aesthetic value of the stones. In most cases, these fundamentals provide quantitative data on the usability and performance of ornamental stones. The present study attempts to put forward a quantitative classification system for natural stone products concerning critical rock properties.

This article provides an overview of real-world outcomes in glaucoma surgical procedures. While randomized clinical trials provide valuable insights, they do not fully reflect real-world clinical practice. Real-world studies enable the evaluation of outcomes in uncontrolled settings and play a crucial role in counselling and decision-making for glaucoma treatment.

Background: Retinal breaks (RB) are emergencies that require treatment to prevent progression of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Vitreal hyperreflective foci (VHF) representing migration of RPE cell clusters or interphotoreceptor matrix from the RB are potential biomarkers. The aim of this study is to investigate VHF in RB-patients using SD-OCT.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of primary surgical treatments for glaucoma in children who had undergone congenital cataract surgery.
  • - A total of 21 children (37 eyes) were analyzed over an average follow-up of about 40 months, with treatments including probe trabeculotomy, 360° catheter-assisted trabeculotomy, and cyclodestructive procedures.
  • - Results showed significant reductions in intraocular pressure (IOP) with the first two techniques after 2 years, while cyclodestructive procedures showed no significant improvement; further research comparing these techniques to glaucoma drainage implants is recommended.

The use of mineral aggregates is related to the increasing demand in construction, railway and road infrastructures. However, mineral aggregates can appear to be of variable quality, directly affecting their suitability for respective earthwork applications. Since the production of mineral aggregates should ensure the standardized, high-quality requirements of the final product, rock-crushing mechanisms should be investigated in a detailed manner.

This present study explored the Böhme abrasion value (BAV) of natural stones through artificial neural networks (ANNs). For this purpose, a detailed literature survey was conducted to collect quantitative data on the BAV of different natural stones from Turkey. As a result of the ANN analyses, several predictive models (M1-M13) were established by using the rock properties, such as the dry density (ρ), water absorption by weight (w), Shore hardness value (SHV), pulse wave velocity (V), and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rocks.

The aim of this publication is to analyze the influence of rock mineral composition and rock geometric properties on the quality of crushed aggregates, from the perspective of selecting an adequate aggregate production technology. This research is based on samples of crushed aggregates from plants processing igneous rocks from four different igneous deposits. In the case of the geometric properties, shape and flakiness indexes were identified and subsequently analyzed along with particle size distribution.

The aim of this article is to present the current knowledge and experiences related to wear and fragmentation resistance tests and to indicate those of their aspects that require further research. For this purpose, a review of the literature was performed. Results show that tests of resistance to wear (the M test) and fragmentation (the LA test) are performed worldwide according to different standards (and thus following different test methods), which prevents a comparison of the obtained results.

To compare two-year results of a filtering trabeculotomy (FTO) to conventional trabeculectomy (TE) in open-angle glaucoma by exact matching. 110 patients received an FTO and 86 a TE. FTO avoided the need for an iridectomy due to a preserved trabeculo-descemet window anterior to the scleral flap.

Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a severe, potentially blinding disease and a therapeutic challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an integrative surgical approach to neovascular glaucoma. Retrospective analysis of a one-year follow-up of a consecutive interventional case series of NVG.

Purpose: We used exact matching for a highly balanced comparison of ab interno trabeculectomy (AIT) with the trabectome to trabeculectomy with mitomycin C (TRAB).

Methods: A total of 5485 patients who underwent AIT were exact-matched to 196 TRAB patients by baseline intraocular pressure (IOP), number of glaucoma medications, and glaucoma type. Nearest-neighbor-matching was applied to age.

Purpose: Glaucoma is the world's most common cause of irreversible blindness, which makes early diagnosis, with the goal of preserving vision, essential. The current medical intervention is to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) to slow down progression of the disease. The main goal of this study was to test a novel handheld acoustic self-tonometer on humans.

While trabeculectomy with mitomycin C has previously been the gold standard in penetrating glaucoma surgery, glaucoma drainage implants used early within glaucoma surgery were examined in the course of the tube versus trabeculectomy (TVT) study. Glaucoma drainage implants are now being used earlier, as materials are tissue-compatible and surgery has been improved. While in the past, the use of such implants was often carried out after multiple preoperations, implants are now being used at an earlier stage.
