As salt marsh habitats face challenges due to sea level rise, storm events, and coastal development, there is an effort to use nature-based approaches such as living shorelines to enhance salt marshes and provide coastal protection. A living shoreline restoration and seasonal monitoring was conducted between July 2016 and October 2018 at an eroding salt marsh on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, Northeastern USA to assess changes in two essential ecosystem services: shoreline stabilization and nitrogen removal. Neither the living shoreline nor unaltered sites demonstrated significant sediment deposition at the marsh edge or on the marsh platform between 2017 and 2018.

Objective: The Trail Making Test (TMT) is commonly used worldwide to evaluate cognitive decline and car driving ability. However, it has received critique for its dependence on the Latin alphabet and thus, the risk of misclassifying some participants. Alphabet support potentially increases test validity by avoiding misclassification of executive dysfunction in participants with dyslexia and those with insufficient automatization of the Latin alphabet.

A graphene-based three-terminal barristor device was proposed to overcome the low on/off ratios and insufficient current saturation of conventional graphene field-effect transistors. In this study, we fabricated and analyzed a novel graphene-based transistor, which resembles the structure of the barristor but uses a different operating condition. This new device, termed graphene adjustable-barriers transistor (GABT), utilizes a semiconductor-based gate rather than a metal-insulator gate structure to modulate the device currents.

Recent efforts to quantify biogeochemical and ecological processes in oyster habitats have focused on provision of habitat and regulation of the nitrogen cycle. However, it is unclear how these two processes may interact. In this study, seasonal patterns of habitat use and nitrogen removal from natural oyster beds were quantified for comparison with nearby bare sediment in Green Hill Pond, a temperate coastal lagoon in Rhode Island USA.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the creation of faceted pyramidal structures through anisotropic etching in amorphous silicon dioxide and glass, which is a surprising behavior compared to traditional silicon etching methods.
  • The observed anisotropic etching is influenced by thin metal layers, leading to significantly faster lateral etch rates compared to vertical rates, with factors varying from 6-43 for liquid and 59 for vapor-based processes.
  • This innovative process enables the production of shallow-angle pyramids, which can enhance light coupling efficiency in LEDs and solar cells, and be used for specialized applications like creating atomic force microscopy tips and potential surface plasmonics.

We present a newly developed magnetic-bottle time-of-flight electron spectrometer suitable for continuous or quasicontinuous photoionization sources such as synchrotrons. A strong magnetic field collects almost all photoelectrons from a well-defined ionization volume and quantitatively suppresses background electrons which originate outside of this interaction region. Although it is a pulsed instrument, a relatively high duty cycle is achieved by storing the photoelectrons generated between two cycles in an electromagnetic trap.

Foal first diarrhoea is one of the most prominent problems in the early life of horses. Probiotics might have the potency to prevent or at least diminish neonatal diarrhoea. We hypothesised that the treatment of foals with probiotic strains of Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Enterococcus faecium starting early after birth and then daily over 2 weeks would prevent or mitigate foal heat diarrhoea.
