Pelvic endometriosis simulating colonic malignant neoplasm.

Three women had endometriosis that involved the rectosigmoid colon; their clinical presentation suggested primary colonic malignant neoplasm. Intestinal obstruction, weight loss, and, in two patients, rectal bleeding with radiologic evidence of a mass lesion that involved the rectosigmoid were present at initial evaluation. All patients eventually underwent colonic resection as definitive therapy.

Treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer with cisplatin and cyclophosphamide.

Between June 1981 and June 1984, 50 patients with stage III or IV epithelial ovarian cancer underwent initial surgery followed by combination chemotherapy with cisplatin 50 mg/m2 iv and cyclophosphamide 500-1000 mg/m2 iv at 28-day intervals. No patients with borderline or well-differentiated tumors were included. If patients were clinically disease-free after 12 cycles of therapy, a second-look laparotomy was performed.

Cloning of authentic human epidermal growth factor as a bacterial secretory protein and its initial structure-function analysis by site-directed mutagenesis.

A synthetic chimeric gene, coding for the human epidermal growth factor fused to the signal peptide of Escherichia coli alkaline phosphatase, was cloned into E. coli under the transcriptional control of the trp-lac (tac) promoter. Following induction with isopropylthiogalactoside, the secretion of the correctly processed protein product into the bacterial periplasm was detected and quantitated by its specific binding to the epidermal growth factor receptor.

Recurrent cervical carcinoma after radical hysterectomy.

The characteristics of recurrent carcinoma following radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy for cervical carcinoma are not well known. Disease recurrence was noted in 27 of 249 patients (11%) with stage IB cervical carcinoma who were treated with a primary surgical approach between January 1962 and December 1984. Fourteen recurrences (52%) occurred within 1 year of surgery, and 24 (89%) within 2 years.

Thiol-sensitive promoters of Escherichia coli.

Mu dX(lac) insertion mutants of Escherichia coli CSH50 in which the expression of the lacZ gene was sensitive to the presence of exogenous 1-thioglycerol or dithiothreitol were isolated. Both stimulatory and inhibitory mutants were found. The existence of several thiol-sensitive promoters suggests that exogenous thiols may provoke global stress responses in E.

Stage II endometrial carcinoma. Results and complications of a combined radiotherapeutic-surgical approach.

Since one third of the patients with Stage II endometrial carcinoma have occult extrauterine pelvic metastases at diagnosis, adequate treatment must include the pelvic lymph nodes and parametria. Eighty-three patients with Stage II endometrial carcinoma were treated between January 1964 and December 1983. Sixty-nine patients (83%) received combined whole-pelvic irradiation and surgery, five (6%) had surgery alone and nine (11%) had radiotherapy alone.

Genetic and fossil evidence for the origin of modern humans.

The origin of living Homo sapiens has once again been the subject of much debate. Genetic data on present human population relationships and data from the Pleistocene fossil hominid record are used to compare two contrasting models for the origin of modern humans. Both genetics and paleontology support a recent African origin for modern humans rather than a long period of multiregional evolution accompanied by gene flow.

Characterization of the regulatory thioredoxin site of phosphoribulokinase.

Phosphoribulokinase is light-regulated via thioredoxin by reversible oxidation/reduction of sulfhydryl/disulfide groups. To identify the cysteinyl residues that are involved in regulation, the S-carboxymethyl labeling patterns of the fully reduced (active) and oxidized (inactive) forms of the enzyme were compared. Tryptic digests of the reduced, [14C]carboxymethylated enzyme contained four labeled peptides, all of which were purified and sequenced by Edman degradation.

Diagnosis of recurrent cervical carcinoma after radical hysterectomy.

A standard surveillance program for cervical carcinoma patients treated with radical hysterectomy is reviewed. Between 1962-1984, 249 patients with stage IB cervical carcinoma treated with radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy were entered in the surveillance program. Of the 27 patients (11%) diagnosed with recurrent carcinoma, 17 (63%) were identified by clinical history, 22 (81%) by physical examination, five (18%) by vaginal cytology, six (22%) by chest radiography, and eight (30%) by renal contrast imaging.

Treatment of metastatic stromal tumors of the ovary with cisplatin, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide.

From September 1981 until June 1986, eight patients with metastatic ovarian stromal tumors were entered into a prospective phase II study to determine the efficacy of a chemotherapy regimen combining cisplatin, doxorubicin, and cyclophosphamide. Patients received cisplatin 40-50 mg/m2 intravenously (IV), doxorubicin 40-50 mg/m2 IV, and cyclophosphamide 400-500 mg/m2 IV, all on day 1 every 28 days. The median age was 43 years (range 24-65 years).

Stage IB cervical carcinoma treated with radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy: role of adjuvant radiotherapy.

A retrospective review of 194 patients with stage IB cervical carcinoma treated with radical hysterectomy between January 1977 and December 1984 revealed 30 patients (15%) with pelvic node metastases. Twenty patients with pelvic node metastases received postoperative radiotherapy and ten patients did not. Five of 20 patients who received adjuvant radiotherapy had recurrence, compared with five of ten patients who did not receive radiotherapy.

Cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin combination therapy in resistant gestational trophoblastic disease.

Eleven patients were treated with cisplatin, vinblastine, and bleomycin (PVB) combination chemotherapy after failure of conventional triple-agent therapy with methotrexate, dactinomycin, and cyclophosphamide for gestational trophoblastic disease. Of ten evaluable patients, five (50%) achieved negative titers. Sustained remission was achieved in only two patients (20%).

An archaic character in the Broken Hill innominate E. 719.

The additional hominid material from Broken Hill, Kabwe, Zambia, is only dubiously associated with the hominid cranium from the site and is often considered to be anatomically modern in morphology. This study identifies an archaic feature, previously recognised in Pliocene and earlier Pleistocene innominates, in the Broken Hill innominate E. 719.

Endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary associated with pregnancy.

The association of endodermal sinus tumor of the ovary with pregnancy is a rare event. Reported is a patient with stage Ic endodermal sinus tumor diagnosed in the 25th week of gestation. She received two cycles of combination chemotherapy consisting of vinblastine, bleomycin, and cisplatin, and delivered a healthy male infant by cesarean section at 32 weeks' gestation.

Age at death of the Neanderthal child from Devil's Tower, Gibraltar and the implications for studies of general growth and development in Neanderthals.

This study combines traditional methods of assessing dental developmental status based upon modern human standards with new techniques based upon histological observations in order to reassess the age at death of the Gibraltar child from Devil's Tower. The results indicate that the most likely age of this individual at death was 3 years of age. This result is in agreement with an independent assessment of the age of the temporal bone of this specimen (Tillier, AM [1982] Z.

Treatment of malignant nondysgerminomatous germ cell tumors of the ovary with vinblastine, bleomycin, and cisplatin.

Fifteen patients with malignant nondysgerminomatous germ cell tumors of the ovary seen at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute at Houston, were treated with a combination of vinblastine, bleomycin, and cisplatin (VBP).

Purification and characterization of ribulose-5-phosphate kinase from spinach.

An efficient purification procedure utilizing affinity chromatography is described for spinach ribulose-5-phosphate kinase, a light-regulated chloroplastic enzyme. Gel filtration and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the purified enzyme reveal a dimeric structure of 44,000 Mr subunits. Chemical crosslinking with dimethyl suberimidate confirms the presence of two subunits per molecule of native kinase, which are shown to be identical by partial NH2-terminal sequencing.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of Bartholin gland.

Five cases of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the Bartholin gland, a rare vulvar tumor, are reviewed with respect to clinical and pathological characteristics. Histologic transition from normal Bartholin gland to adenoid cystic carcinoma was evident in two cases. Two patients developed the tumor in association with pregnancy.
