The effects of altitude on human performance and cognition were evaluated in a field study performed on Mount Denali in Alaska during the summer of 1990. Climbers performed a series of perceptual, cognitive, and sensory-motor tasks before, during, and after climbing the West Buttress route on Denali. Relative to a matched control group that performed the tasks at sea level, the climbers showed deficits of learning and retention in perceptual and memory tasks.

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) and its analog, transforming growth factor-alpha, are felt to be important in oncogenesis. When malignant rabbit fibroma virus infects RK-13 rabbit kidney cells, a 34-kd protein that inhibits the effects of EGF on certain target cell lines is produced. We have purified this protein using high-pressure liquid chromatography and gel electrophoresis.

Myxoma virus (MYX) is a leporipoxvirus of rabbits that induces a lethal syndrome characterized by disseminated tumorlike lesions, generalized immunosuppression, and secondary gram-negative bacterial infection. A MYX deletion mutant (vMYX-GF- delta M11L) was constructed to remove the entire myxoma growth factor (MGF) coding sequence and that for the C-terminal five amino acids of the partially overlapping upstream gene, M11L. Unexpectedly, this deletion completely abrogates the capacity of MYX to cause the characteristic disease symptoms of myxomatosis.

The postnatal growth, respiratory status and neurodevelopmental outcome of surviving babies enrolled in the first European multicentre trial of porcine surfactant (Curosurf) replacement for severe neonatal respiratory distress syndrome, were assessed at corrected ages of 1 and 2 years. Follow up rates of survivors were 93% at 1 year and 89% at 2 years. Treated and control groups were similar at both 1 and 2 years in terms of physical growth, the prevalence of persistent respiratory symptoms and the occurrence of major and minor disability.

The antitumor effects of recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) and mismatched double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) were assessed in tissue culture and in a nude mouse model. Mismatched dsRNA did not show a direct antiproliferative effect against the human malignant melanoma cell line, BRO, in tissue culture. However, treatment of the BRO cells with up to 1000 units/ml rIL-2 in culture showed a slight increase in growth rate.

The role of the epidermal growth factor homologue in malignant rabbit fibroma virus (MRV) pathogenicity was investigated by constructing a viral growth factor deletion mutant (MRV-GF-). Since MRV is a recombinant virus with a myxoma virus background but possesses some terminal sequences derived from Shope fibroma virus, the growth factor gene in MRV is in fact identical to Shope fibroma growth factor (SFGF). Although no significant differences were detected in the in vitro characteristics of MRV and MRV-GF-, a pronounced attenuation was observed after inoculation of the test rabbits with MRV-GF-.

The 10.7-kb BamHI "C" restriction fragment of malignant rabbit fibroma virus (MV) contains genes that are important for its immunosuppressive activity. When this fragment is transferred to a related avirulent leporipoxvirus, Shope fibroma virus (SFV), recombinant viruses show clinical features characteristic of MV: they replicate in lymphocytes and alter immune function in vitro, induce disseminated tumors in recipient rabbits, and are immunosuppressive in vivo.

In this study the importance of a low-weight surfactant protein (11 kDa) is demonstrated by selectively blocking this protein with a monoclonal antibody. In adult rats respiratory failure was induced by repeated bronchoalveolar lavage to remove all pulmonary surfactant. It was shown that surfactant mixed with the antibody was not capable of restoring lung function when compared with surfactant alone or surfactant mixed with control serum.
