Pancreatic ectasia (PE) is a common incidental finding in people dying from uremia. It has been described as dilatation of acini, inspissation of secretions, and proliferation of ductal cells. PE occurred in 17 macaques, 11 of which were known to have been uremic.

Sixty-three patients completed a multicenter 10 week, double-blind, parallel group protocol evaluating the efficacy of diltiazem versus placebo with respect to rate of attacks of angina, nitroglycerin consumption and duration of treadmill exercise. An additional 36 patients were evaluated for drug safety. A 4 week placebo lead-in phase was followed by a 2 week dose titration period and two treatment evaluation periods of 2 weeks each.

We have tagged heptadecanoic acid with C-11 at the carboxyl group and have inserted a methyl radical in the beta position to inhibit beta oxidation of the fatty acid; we have then explored the tracer's potential as an indicator of myocardial metabolism for use with the positron tomograph. In this preliminary evaluation, biodistribution studies were made in rats and dogs, and imaging of normal and infarcted dogs was performed. At 30 min the tissue distribution studies in rats and dogs showed, respectively, 1.

Diseases that cause symptoms incompletely relieved by available modes of treatment stimulate search for new therapies. Chronic disease processes, in which interventions are palliative rather than curative provide a particular challenge in determining the value of therapeutic intervention. Management of patients with angina pectoris is an example of this challenge.

Two dimensional echocardiography is just beginning to be used to characterize cardiac damage in patients with acute myocardial infarction. The two dimensional approach allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of cardiac anatomy and is able to detect with high sensitivity changes in regional wall motion that previously were sometimes missed or only found with difficulty using M mode echocardiography. Two dimensional echocardiography appears to offer a basis for quantifying the extent of myocardial damage in acute myocardial infarction and thus may permit objective assessment of therapeutic modalities and prognosis.

The accuracy of three-dimensional transverse section positron emission imaging for quantification of myocardial infarction size was validated and compared with the accuracy of two dimensional planar positron imaging. After induction of acute anterior myocardial infarction in anaesthetised dogs, gallium-68 albumin microspheres were injected into the left atrium. Planar and transverse section images of the thorax were obtained with a multicrystal positron camera.

Cerebral ring hemorrhages were observed in four species of monkeys with various forms of anemia. The lesions resembled those described in humans with a variety of diseases, including pernicious anemia. The pale centers of most lesions were surrounded by rings of erythrocytes.

We examined the feasibility of early imaging of myocardial infarcts by intracoronary injection of 131I-labelled cardiac myosin-specific antibody (Fab')2. The left anterior descending coronary artery was occluded for 5 hours by a balloon catheter introduced through the carotid artery in 12 dogs. The catheter was withdrawn and 1 mCi 201Tl was injected intravenously and 500 muCi of 131I antibody were injected into the main left coronary artery.

The ability of several bacterial species to adhere to human nasal mucosal cells and their distribution on nasal mucosal surfaces was studied. Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa adhered to scraped nasal mucosal cells. In contrast, viridans streptococci and Klebsiella pneumoniae exhibited feeble or no adherence to nasal mucosal cells.

The sensitivity of myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) using thallium-201 injected both at rest and during peak exercise was compared to simultaneously recorded 12 lead electrocardiography (ECG) for the detection of transient ischemia in 20 normal subjects and 63 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). No significant perfusion defects or ECG changes were seen on either the rest or exercise studies in any of the normal subjects. Fifty-six percent of patients with CAD developed new perfusion defects with exercise compared to 38% who developed ischemic ST-segment depression (P less than 0.

Twenty-one dogs were studied under conditions of normal oxygenation and hypoxia with the microsphere distribution method to determine the effect of arterial oxygen saturation on the regional distribution of cardiac output. The dogs were anesthetized and artifically ventilated. Cannulas were placed in the left ventricle to administer microspheres and in a peripheral artery to determine cardiac output.
