Transient patterns of advanced brain ageing in female adolescents with anorexia nervosa.

Background: Anorexia nervosa is a psychiatric disorder characterised by undernutrition, significantly low body weight and large, although possibly transient, reductions in brain structure. Advanced brain ageing tracks accelerated age-related changes in brain morphology that have been linked to psychopathology and adverse clinical outcomes.

Aim: The aim of the current case-control study was to characterise cross-sectional and longitudinal patterns of advanced brain age in acute anorexia nervosa and during the recovery process.

Ensuring Equitable Application of Interventions to Vulnerable Subpopulations in the Kentucky Consortium for Accountable Health Communities (KC-AHC).

Introduction: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has funded the Accountable Health Communities (AHC) model to test whether systematically identifying and addressing the health-related social needs (HRSNs) of individuals would impact healthcare utilization and total cost of care for Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. Toward this effort, AHCs implement screening, referral, and community navigation services in their local areas. There are 28 CMS-funded AHCs nationwide, including the Kentucky Consortium for Accountable Health Communities (KC-AHC).

Background: Salvianolic acid B (SAB) is a major component of root (Danshen), widely used in East/Southeast Asia for centuries to treat cardiovascular diseases. Danshen depside salt, 85% of which is made up of SAB, is approved in China to treat chronic angina. Although clinical observations suggest that Danshen extracts inhibited arterial and venous thrombosis, the exact mechanism has not been adequately elucidated.

Initial Employment Plans of PharmD Graduates from Ten Public Colleges/Schools of Pharmacy, 2018-2022.

Objective: Since 2009, the Big Ten Pharmacy Assessment Collaborative has surveyed their Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) graduates regarding their first employment plans. The current study updates the results from 2013-2017, since which the nationwide demand for pharmacists decreased, then increased again due to COVID-19.

Methods: Quantitative first-position employment data from 2018-2022 were tracked among 6687 Big Ten PharmD graduates.

Personalizing Personalized Medicine: The Confluence of Pharmacogenomics, a Person's Medication Experience and Ethics.

Truly personalized precision medicine combines pharmacogenomics (PGx), a person's lived medication experiences and ethics; person-centeredness lies at the confluence of these considerations. A person-centered perspective can help inform PGx-related treatment guidelines, shared decision-making for PGx-related therapeutics and PGx-related healthcare policy. This article examines the interplay between these components of person-centered PGx-related care.

Addressing the Barriers to Clinical Trials Accrual in Community Cancer Centres Using a National Clinical Trials Navigator:A Cross-Sectional Analysis.

Introduction: Clinical trials, although academically accepted as the most effective treatment available for cancer patients, poor accrual to clinical trials remains a significant problem. A clinical trials navigator (CTN) program was piloted where patients and/or their healthcare professionals could request a search and provide a list of potential cancer clinical trials in which a patient may be eligible based on their current status and disease.

Objectives: This study examined the outcomes of a pilot program to try to improve clinical trials accrual with a focus on patients at medium to small sized cancer programs.

Pure White Cell Aplasia and Immune Thrombocytopenia after Thymoma Resection: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

We report a case of pure white cell aplasia (PWCA) postthymoma resection in a 74-year-old male presenting with a 2-week history of fevers, night sweats, and severe febrile neutropenia. His pure white cell aplasia was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), prednisone, and cyclosporine with a mixed response. He also developed immune thrombocytopenia, which responded well to a short course of eltrombopag.

The Importance of Teaching Ethics in Pharmacy Education.

All pharmacy faculty members should have a general understanding of the field of ethics, regardless of whether they have received any formal training, since instruction and training in ethical decision-making is an accreditation expectation. Additionally, whether they recognize it or not, pharmacy faculty members are involved in ethical decision-making on an almost daily basis. The aims of the current commentary are to expand on a basic approach to ethical decision-making using examples involving students or faculty members in each of the triad areas of teaching, research, and service, and serve as a starting point to enable all faculty to teach students how to work through an ethical dilemma.

Detection of Academic Early Warning Signs and Effective Intervention "Takes a Village".

Early intervention for students at risk of academic difficulty can be more effectively accomplished using a team-based approach that capitalizes on the expertise of many in a pharmacy education community. Authored by members of the Big Ten Alliance Pharmacy Assessment Collaborative, this commentary advocates for better integration of assessment professionals, pharmacy faculty, and student support services to capture academic, accountability, and behavior-related data that might signal student intellectual and/or behavioral challenges and manifest as marginal academic performance. Assessment professionals can assist with creating data dashboards/monitoring systems, recognizing trends within the data, refining formulas to identify at-risk students, and measuring the impact of interventions to determine which approaches positively and significantly influence outcomes.

Addressing Hidden Curricula That Subvert the Patient-Centeredness "Hub" of the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process "Wheel".

This systematic review's purpose is to improve clarity for the meaning of patient-centered care in the JCPP Pharmacists' Patient Care Process and to provide an initial foothold for faculty to address "hidden curricula" that undermine the concept. Our corresponding objectives were to identify and describe the conceptualizations defining patient-centered care from the pharmacy literature; and compare the meaning of patient-centeredness in the pharmacy literature with the construct's seminal conceptualizations from other professional groups. The search protocol produced 61 unique sources from the pharmacy literature.

Incorporating Ethics Content Throughout an Integrated Pharmacy Curriculum.

To incorporate ethics content into nine courses across three years of the didactic pharmacy curriculum and in introductory and advanced pharmacy practice experiences to ensure Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students are prepared to address ethical issues. A free-standing, one-credit ethics course from the existing curriculum was eliminated. Partnering with course directors from nine required PharmD courses across all three years of the didactic curriculum and with the Office of Experiential Education, an Integrated Ethics syllabus was created that provided each class of approximately 170 students with at least one credit of didactic ethics instruction and added ethics activities to the experiential curriculum.

Seeing the Elephant: A Systematic Scoping Review and Comparison of Patient-Centeredness Conceptualizations from Three Seminal Perspectives.

"Patient-Centeredness" (PC) is a theoretical construct made up of a diverse constellation of distinct concepts, processes, practices, and outcomes that have been developed, arranged, and prioritized heterogeneously by different communities of professional healthcare practice, research, and policy. It is bound together by a common ethos that puts the holistic individual at the functional and symbolic center of their care, a quality deemed essential for chronic disease management and health promotion. Several important contributions to the PC research space have adeptly integrated seminal PC conceptualizations to improve conceptual clarity, measurement, implementation, and evaluation in research and practice.

Parental Leave Policies in Canadian Residency Education.

Background: In recent decades, the gender makeup of Canadian medical residents has approached parity. As residency training years coincide closely with childbearing years and paid parental leave is associated with numerous benefits for both parents and children, it is important for there to be clarity about parental leave benefits.

Objectives: We aimed to conduct a comprehensive review of maternity and parental leave policies in all residency education programs in Canada, to highlight gaps that might be improved or areas in which Canadian programs excel.

Total synthesis-the ultimate proving ground for the invention and field-testing of new methods, exploration of disruptive strategies, final structure confirmation, and empowerment of medicinal chemistry on natural products-is one of the oldest and most enduring subfields of organic chemistry. In the early days of this field, its sole emphasis focused on debunking the concept of vitalism, that living organisms could create forms of matter accessible only to them. Emphasis then turned to the use of synthesis to degrade and reconstitute natural products to establish structure and answer questions about biosynthesis.

Sex differences and psychological stress: responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in China.

Background: About 83,000 COVID-19 patients were confirmed in China up to May 2020. Amid the well-documented threats to physical health, the effects of this public health crisis - and the varied efforts to contain its spread - have altered individuals' "normal" daily functioning. These impacts on social, psychological, and emotional well-being remain relatively unexplored - in particular, the ways in which Chinese men and women experience and respond to potential behavioral stressors.

The intriguing structure of tagetitoxin (), a long-standing challenge in natural product synthesis, has been the subject of multiple revisions and has been confirmed through total synthesis. The route commences from a renewable furan starting material and features a number of unusual transformations (such as rearrangements, bromocyclization, and P(V)-based phosphate installation) to arrive at the target in 15 steps. As the route was designed to enable access to both enantiomers, the absolute configuration of the natural product could be assigned using a bioassay on (+)- and (-)-.

Lack of Diversity in Simulation Technology: An Educational Limitation?

Despite increased attention on diversity in medicine and healthcare, heterogeneity in simulation technology has been slow to follow suit. In a nonsystematic review of simulation technology available in 2018 with respect to skin tone, age and sex, we found limited diversity in these offerings, suggesting limitations to educators' abilities to represent the full array of patients, conditions, and scenarios encountered in medicine and training. We highlight these limitations and propose basic strategies by which educators can increase awareness of and incorporate diversity into the simulation arena.
