Simian virus 40-associated fatal interstitial pneumonia and renal tubular necrosis in a rhesus monkey.

Simian virus 40 was isolated from a young adult rhesus monkey dying of naturally acquired interstitial pneumonia and renal tubular necrosis. Light microscopic examination demonstrated basophilic intranuclear inclusions associated with the lesions in the lung and the kidney. These inclusions were positive for antigen of simian virus 40 by immunoperoxidase staining of paraffin sections of affected organs.

Biological characterization of the virus causing leukoencephalitis and arthritis in goats.

This study describes the biological properties of a strain of virus isolated from tissues of a goat with leukoencephalomyelitis-arthritis. The agent is a retrovirus, having a virion-associated reverse transcriptase enzyme and an antigenic determinant(s) which cross-reacts with the p30 of visna-maedi viruses. Morphogenesis of the virus is also similar to visna virus in terms of virus assembly and the multinucleated giant cell formation which accompanies replication of the latter virus.

Visna-maedi-like disease associated with an ovine retrovirus infection in a Corriedale sheep.

A visna-maedi-like disease was found in a Corriedale sheep from which a retrovirus sharing the group antigen of visna-progressive pneumonia virus was isolated from lung, brain, and spleen. Clinically, the sheep had acute neurologic signs and dyspnea. Pathologic examination showed lesions similar to both visna and maedi.

Therapeutic embolization with detachable balloons.

In our first 18 months' clinical experience with embolization in the chest and abdomen using detachable balloons, successful results were obtained in 34 of 38 patients. One and 2-mm detachable silicone balloons, which can occlude vessels 4--8 mm in diameter, were employed. Prolonged balloon inflation was routinely achieved using iso-osmotic iodipamide meglumine as the filler and limiting inflation volumes to experimentally determined maximums.

Early imaging of experimental intestinal infarction with 99mTc-pyrophosphate.

Extensive mucosal small-bowel infarction was produced in 8 dogs by occluding the cranial mesenteric artery. After one hour of reperfusion, 15 mCi (555 MBq) of 99mTc-pyrophosphate was intra-arterially injected into 4 dogs and venously into the other 4. Positive images were obtained in all dogs except 1 which had received an intravenous injection.

The pregnant Syrian hamster as a model to study intravascular trophoblasts and associated maternal blood vessel changes.

In pregnant Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) used as an animal model for studying the migration of fetal trophoblasts and the associated changes in maternal blood vessels, intravascular trophoblasts migrated well beyond the blood vessels of the uterus and into the vessels of the mesometrium. They migrated beyond the decidua of the uterus, into the lumina of maternal uterine and mesometrial arteries, but not into veins. The arterial changes, which were often segmental, resembled those seen in the decidua and consisted of a replacement of normal smooth muscle cells by poorly differentiated stromal cells.

Relationship of seminal volume to size and disease of the prostate in the beagle.

The seminal volume of young adult Beagles was correlated with the size of and disease in their prostates. The ejaculate volume of naturally collected semen increased in a linear manner with prostatic weight in dogs with normal or glandular hyperplastic prostates. This correlation was not observed in the dogs with cystic hyperplasia, in which there was a reduction in volume of 50% in the semen produced for each gram of prostate.

Comparison of spontaneous and experimentally induced canine prostatic hyperplasia.

Spontaneous prostatic hyperplasia in the beagle appears to progress with age from a glandular to a cystic histological appearance. Prostatic hyperplasia can be induced in young beagles with intact testes by treatment for 4 mo with either dihydrotestosterone or 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol, alone, or with either of these steroids in combination with 17 beta-estradiol. In contrast, the induction of prostatic hyperplasia in young castrated beagles, in which the gland had been allowed to involute for 1 mo, requires the administration of both 17 beta-estradiol and either 5 alpha-androstane-3 alpha, 17 beta-diol or dihydrotestosterone.

Histopathology of neoplastic and nonneoplastic hepatic lesions in mice fed diets containing tetrachlorvinphos.

Tetrachlorvinphos was fed at 8,000 or 16,000 ppm in diets to male and female (C57BL/6N X C3H/HeN)F1 mice for 80 weeks. Surviving mice were killed at 92 weeks, and all mice were completely necropsied. A high incidence of unusual nonneoplastic hepatic lesions in treated mice was present and characterized by pericellular fibrosis, hepatocyte nuclear pleomorphism, and intrasinusoidal foci of macrophages with intracytoplasmic crystalline structures.

Chronic active hepatitis in dogs associated with leptospires.

Chronic active hepatitis was diagnosed in five American Foxhounds from one kennel. Spirochetes were demonstrated in the liver in four of the dogs. A rising titer to Leptospira interrogans serovar grippotyphosa was found in the fifth dog, although spirochetes were not demonstrated in tissues.

Rabbit cardiomyopathy associated with a virus antigenically related to human coronavirus strain 229E.

A new disease of rabbits is described. Following an acute febrile course, animals die or recover by the 11th day postinoculation. The characteristic pathologic finding is multifocal myocardial degeneration and necrosis.

Therapeutic embolization with detachable silicone balloons. Early clinical experience.

A recently developed percutaneous transcatheter technique for selectively occluding arteries with detachable silicone balloons was applied in four patients. Uncontrollable hemorrhage from carcinoma of the cervix was controlled by selective uterine artery occlusion in one patient. Life-threatening hemorrhage from cystic fibrosis in another patient was controlled by balloon occlusion of a bronchial artery.

Therapeutic embolization with detachable silicone balloons: long-term effects in swine.

Twenty-one embolizations were performed in 12 swine using a detachable silicone balloon-catheter system. In 11 embolizations, balloons were filled with 60% meglumine sodium diatrizoate (R-60); 30% meglumine sodium diatrizoate (R-30) was used in 10 embolizations. Serial radiographs were obtained to determine the duration of balloon inflation.

Metrizamide, the ideal radiopaque filling material for detachable silicone balloon embolization.

Porcine visceral and extremity arteries were embolized with detachable silastic balloons; 10 balloons were filled with isoosmolar metrizamide, five were filled with 30% meglumine-sodium diatrizoate and five were filled with 3:1 mixtures of blood and 76% meglumine-sodium diatrizoate. Follow-up radiographs were obtained weekly for 2 weeks, at 4 weeks and at 5 months. At 3 months, arteriography was performed.

Quality assurance for pathology in rodent carcinogenesis tests.

A large scale national carcinogenesis testing program requires quality assurance procedures for each scientific discipline, including pathology. The NCl Carcinogenesis Testing Program's pathology procedures involve the necropsy examination, histology, histopathologic diagnosis, data recording, and report writing. Each phase of the program requires specific quality assurance procedures, some of which are clerical, others scientific.

Clinical and pathologic conditions of female nude (athymic) mice in two conventional maintained colonies.

Two colonies of female outbred nude (athymic) mice were maintained by conventional standards of husbandry, but with special sanitary methods and segregation from other rodents. A total of 1,526 mice entered the colonies. Of these, 802 were untreated and most remained healthy.

Granular cell variants in a rat schwannoma. Evidence of neurogenic origin of granular cell tumor (myoblastoma).

A large, intraabdominal rat schwannoma had numerous granule-containing cells cytologically identical to cells of granular cell tumor (myoblastoma). The small eosinophilic granules stained positively by the periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) reaction, with intensity not reduced by diastase pretreatment. Granules stained positively with the Tibor Pap silver impregnation for reticulin and by electron microscopy were identical to myoblastoma cell granules.

99mTc-pyrophosphate imaging in experimental mesenteric infarction: relationship of tracer uptake to the degree of ischemic injury.

Four-hour balloon occlusion of the cranial mesenteric artery in 13 dogs produced a spectrum of widespread ischemic injury to the small bowel ranging from superficial mucosal infarction to transmural infarction. Twenty-four hours after the beginning of balloon occlusion, 15 mCl of 99mTc-pyrophosphate was injected into the cranial mesenteric artery in 8 dogs and into a peripheral vein in 5. Gamma camera imaging of the abdomen followed three hours later.

Chronic vascular reactions to steel coil occlusion devices.

Original Gianturco steel coil vascular embolization devices and two modifications were compared for their occlusive effects and for the degree of adverse reaction in the surrounding vessel wall. Modifications consisted of silk or Ivalon replacing the wool strands of the original device. Single coils were placed into the left renal artery of nine mixed breed swine and restudied 3 months later.

Transcatheter embolization with microfibrillar collagen in swine.

Transcatheter embolization of the gastrosplenic and renal arteries was performed in 7 domestic swine with suspensions of microfibrillar collagen (MFC), a recently developed topical hemostatic agent. Embolized vessels remained occluded 2 days following embolization. Recanalization occurred by 14 days, although some occlusion in distal vessel persisted at 3 months.

Therapeutic embolization with long-term occluding agents and their effects on embolized tissues.

The effects of long-term occlusion of branches of the celiac and renal arteries were studied in 13 pigs, using isobutyl 2-cyanoacrylate (ibc), the Gianturco-Anderson-Wallace wool coil, and lvalon. IBC permanently occluded 2- to 8-cm lengths of both vessels, including their branches so that collateral circulation was not able to preserve the tissue supplied by the occluded artery. Gastric ulcers, splenic and hepatic infarcts, and large, sterile biliary cysts were observed on postmortem examination.

Cryptosporidium in snakes with hypertrophic gastritis.

Fourteen captive snakes of three genera and four species had severe chronic hypertrophic gastritis. Persistent postprandial regurgitation and firm midbody swelling were the most common clinical signs. Fecal smears had many roughly spherical organisms confirmed by ultrastructural study to be oocysts of Cryptosporidium.

Long term follow-up of transcatheter embolization with autologous clot, oxycel and gelfoam in domestic swine.

Transcatheter embolization of the distal gastrosplenic artery as well as the distal right renal artery or one of its bifurcational branches was performed in 9 domestic swine. The animals were embolized with fresh autologous clot, oxycel or gelfoam in groups of 3. The embolic material was opacified with tantalum in several animals.
