Influence of C-reactive protein levels and age on the value of D-dimer in diagnosing pulmonary embolism.

Background: Recently, the number of performed CT-angiographies to diagnose pulmonary embolism (PE) rised markedly, while the incidence of PE hardly increased. This low yield of CT-angiography leads to more patients exposed to radiation and higher costs.

Aim: The diagnostic value of age, C-reactive protein (CRP) and D-dimer in PE was investigated.

A 38-year-old woman presented with mild abdominal pain in the right inferior quadrant. Ultrasonography and CT scan suggested intussusception in the ileocoecal region. At exploratory laparotomy an invagination ofthe appendix through the appendicial base into the coecum was found.

A solitary Peutz-Jeghers type polyp in the jejunum of a 19 year-old male.

A 19-year old male presented with melena and anemia. A duodenoscopy revealed no abnormalities, but a small bowel X-ray series demonstrated a large jejunal polyp. This 4 cm large polyp was visualised during peroperative small bowel endoscopy and was subsequently surgically removed.

[An 80-year-old woman with dyspnoea caused by cardiac myxoma].

An 80-year-old woman presented with general malaise and dyspnoea that has persisted for 2 months. Physical examination, laboratory tests, chest X-ray and ECG were normal, but tachycardia was not. A CT scan of the thorax performed due to suspicion of pulmonary embolism revealed a lesion in the right atrium and no other abnormalities.

In a 79-year-old woman with acute abdomen CT revealed a 'whirl sign' configuration, pathognomonic for volvulus of the small bowel.

[Quality of dental radiographs. A sample from 52 general practices].

To assess the quality of dental radiographs in general practice, 1000 radiographs in 52 practices were collected and evaluated. The radiographs were judged by two examiners using standard series of X-ray film, showing different degrees of the nine different types of errors studied. Furthermore, the diagnostic quality was assessed; if the diagnostic value was poor, the cause was registered.

Complete nucleotide sequence of a human c-onc gene: deduced amino acid sequence of the human c-fos protein.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the c-fos(human) gene, the human cellular homolog of the oncogene (v-fos) of Finkel-Biskis-Jinkins murine osteosarcoma virus, has been determined. The c-fos(human) gene contains four discontinuous regions when compared with the v-fos gene. Three of the discontinuities are flanked by sequences characteristic of introns, while the fourth discontinuity is due to a deletion of 104 base pairs in the v-fos gene.

Structure of the FBJ murine osteosarcoma virus genome: molecular cloning of its associated helper virus and the cellular homolog of the v-fos gene from mouse and human cells.

The 8.2-kilobase (kb) unintegrated circular DNA form of the FBJ murine leukemia virus (FBJ-MLV) was linearized by cleavage at the single HindIII site, molecularly cloned into bacteriophage Charon 30, and subsequently subcloned into pBR322 (pFBJ-MLV-1). Both FBJ-MLV virion RNA and pFBJ-MLV-1 DNA were used to investigate the arrangement of helper virus sequences in the FBJ murine osteosarcoma virus genome (FBJ-MSV) by heteroduplex formation with cloned FBJ-MSV proviral DNA.

Analysis of FBJ-MuSV provirus and c-fos (mouse) gene reveals that viral and cellular fos gene products have different carboxy termini.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the FBJ-MuSV proviral DNA and the cellular homolog (c-fos) of its oncogene (v-fos) have been determined. The 4026 nucleotide long FBJ-MuSV proviral DNA contains two long terminal repeats, a substitution of 1639 nucleotides of mouse cellular DNA (v-fos) and the 3' end of the env gene derived from FBJ-MuLV. The sequences of the parental FBJ-MuLV and the cellular c-fos (mouse) gene share five of five nucleotides at the 5' end and ten of 11 nucleotides at the 3' end of the v-fos substitution.

Analysis of the env gene of a molecularly cloned and biologically active Moloney mink cell focus-forming proviral DNA.

A biologically active molecular clone of BALB/Moloney mink cell focus-forming (Mo-MCF) proviral DNA has been reconstructed in vitro. It contains the 5' half of BALB/Moloney murine leukemia virus (Mo-MuLV) DNA and the 3' half of BALB/Mo-MCF DNA. The complete nucleotide sequence of the env gene and the 3' long terminal repeat (LTR) of the cloned Mo-MCF DNA has been determined and compared with the sequence of the corresponding region of parental Mo-MuLV DNA.

The optimum circular field size for dental radiography with intraoral films.

Intraoral radiographs are often made with circular fields to irradiate the film, and in many instances these fields are much larger than the film. The feasibility of reducing a circular radiation field without increasing the probability of excessive cone cutting was evaluated clinically, and an optimum field size was determined. Antibodies Against the Genome-Linked Protein VPg of Cowpea Mosaic Virus Recognize a 60,000-Dalton Precursor Polypeptide.

We have prepared a rabbit antiserum specifically directed against the genome-linked protein (VPg) of cowpea mosaic virus by injecting an hydrolysate of purified virion RNA. Using this antiserum as a probe in combination with "Western" (protein) blots of subcellular fractions of cowpea mosaic virus-infected cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) cells, we have detected a bottom component RNA-encoded, 60,000-dalton polypeptide which is membrane bound and presumably represents the immediate precursor of VPg.
