It is well-understood that active learning approaches have positive learning outcomes and improve retention. Active learning strategies for the neuroscience laboratory setting have been extensively developed. Fewer active learning approaches are available for the traditional lecture-based setting.

School-Based Health Centers Addressing Health Equity for LGBTQ + Patients (SBHCs HELP): protocol for a stepped-wedge trial to implement innovations promoting structural competency.

Background: School-based health centers (SBHCs) provide vital behavioral, sexual, and reproductive healthcare services to school-aged youth across the United States. Adolescents who are sexual and gender diverse (SGD) are far more likely to suffer from adverse health outcomes than their cisgender and heterosexual peers. Emerging structural competency frameworks call for cultivating capacities in SBHCs to modify organizational service delivery environments, including provider and staff knowledge and behaviors, to influence SGD adolescent well-being.

Religion and Spirituality in Lifestyle Medicine.

Decades of research now support the positive relationship of religion/spirituality (R/S) with physical health, mental health, morbidity, and mortality. While lifestyle medicine (LM) practitioners often recognize R/S as important, they can face common challenges of how to integrate R/S into their holistic, patient-centered care. To help, this article presents a faith-practice framework, as a starting point for considering incorporating R/S into LM practice-in light of common concerns and challenges, as a guide for patient-centered care through adjusting lifestyle prescriptions to accommodate individualized R/S beliefs and practices for improved health behavior and outcomes, and as an encouragement to stimulate openness for positive, thoughtful discussion into the future of R/S in LM practice and research.

Lifestyle medicine (LM) utilizes evidence-based therapeutic lifestyle changes to address lifestyle factors that impact health, performance, and injury risk and recovery. By integrating LM principles into clinical care, workplace policies, and programs, along with other evidence-based methods, occupational and environmental medicine clinicians and medical directors can enhance worker health and performance, manage chronic disease, and facilitate faster recovery from injury and illness. This guidance addresses approaches that can be used in the clinic and workplace to address tobacco, substance misuse, nutrition, physical activity, overweight/obesity, sleep, mental well-being, and social connectedness.

Thyroid hormone dysfunction is frequently observed in patients with chronic illnesses including heart failure, which increases the risk of adverse events. This study examined the effects of thyroid hormones (THs) on cardiac transverse-tubule (TT) integrity, Ca sparks, and nanoscale organization of ion channels in excitation-contraction (EC) coupling, including L-type calcium channel (Ca1.2), ryanodine receptor type 2 (RyR2), and junctophilin-2 (Jph2).

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) establishes lifelong latency in trigeminal ganglionic (TG) neurons following intranasal and ocular infection in cattle. Periodically, the latent virus reactivates in the TG due to stress and is transported anterogradely to nerve endings in the nasal epithelium, where the virus replicates and sheds. Consequently, BoHV-1 is transmitted to susceptible animals and maintained in the cattle population.

Astrocytes are multi-functional glial cells in the central nervous system that play critical roles in modulation of metabolism, extracellular ion and neurotransmitter levels, and synaptic plasticity. Astrocyte-derived signaling molecules mediate many of these modulatory functions of astrocytes, including vesicular release of ATP. In the present study, we used a unique genetic mouse model to investigate the functional significance of astrocytic exocytosis of ATP.

Although an active area of interest, topical therapy with antioxidants for the treatment of cataracts is complicated by multiple ocular anatomical barriers, product stability, and solubility. Aims: Cytoplasmic dynein heavy chain (DYNC1H1) is a multi-subunit protein complex that provides motor force for movement of cargo on microtubules and traffics them back to the soma. In humans, mutations along the DYNC1H1 gene result in intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays, and neurologic and motor deficits. The aim of the study was to generate a mouse model to a newly identified de novo heterozygous DYNC1H1 mutation, within a functional ATPase domain (c9052C > T(P3018S)), identified in a child with motor deficits, and intellectual disabilities.

Despite high rates of cigarette use, little attention has been paid to screening and cessation services for youth in foster care. Study aims were to test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a technology-based smoking cessation intervention. Study enrollment, satisfaction, and engagement were high in the intervention arm, where readiness to change also significantly increased over time.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is considered to be a high biodefense priority based on its threat to livestock and its ability to cause human hemorrhagic fever. RVFV-infected livestock are also a significant risk factor for human infection by direct contact with contaminated blood, tissues, and aborted fetal materials. LM focuses on six pillars-a plant-predominant eating pattern; physical movement; restorative sleep; management of stress; avoidance of risky substances; and positive social connections. Advances in LM competencies, education, certification, resources, and practice models are accelerating with a particular need and focus on underserved and most seriously impacted patients and communities.

Fenbendazole (FBZ) is a common antiparasitic treatment used in research rodent colonies for biosecurity purposes. The effect of this compound has been studied in C57 mice, but never before in a strain of mice that has co-morbidities, such as the blood pressure high (BPH)/5. The BPH/5 mouse is an inbred genetic model of hypertension.
