Objectives: Few studies have analyzed potential inequities in both pediatric patient safety events (PSEs) and adverse events (AEs) - PSEs leading to harm - nor in PSEs by event type. We sought to examine potential inequities in rates of pediatric PSEs overall, by severity, and by category based on race and ethnicity, insurance payor, and language as measured using voluntary incident reports (IRs).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of pediatric hospitalizations between January 19, 2012 through December 31, 2019 at a US urban, tertiary care children's hospital.

In this paper we investigate the interconnection between vacancy-ordered phases and vacancy self-diffusion. Here, we investigate three ordered phases on a square lattice with energetics defined by two separate Hamiltonians. In the first case we used a classical antiferromagnetic Ising model Hamiltonian in order to generate a 'checkerboard' type ordered structure.

Objectives: Data on inpatient safety are documented by hospital staff through incident reporting (IR) systems. Safety observations from families or patients are rarely captured. The Family Input for Quality and Safety (FIQS) study created a mobile health tool for pediatric patients and their families to anonymously report safety observations in real time during hospitalization.

To study the SARS-CoV-2 transmission potential in Rhode Island (RI) and its association with policy changes and mobility changes, the time-varying reproduction number, R, was estimated. The daily incident case counts (16 March 2020, through 30 November 2021) were bootstrapped within a 15-day sliding window and multiplied by Poisson-distributed multipliers (λ = 4, sensitivity analysis: 11) to generate 1000 estimated infection counts, to which EpiEstim was applied to generate R time series. The median R percentage change when policies changed was estimated.

Objective: Despite three decades of effort, ensuring inpatient safety remains elusive. Patients and family members are a potential source of safety observations, but systems gathering these are limited. Our goal was to test a system to gather safety observations from hospitalized patients and their family members via a real-time mobile health tool.

: Achilles tendon ruptures are devastating injuries for National Basketball Association (NBA) players: prior studies have demonstrated decreased performance following return-to-play, but none have evaluated the effect of injury on rate-adjusted contextual statistics to assess the true change in performance. Additionally, there exists a paucity of data on the independent impact on defensive performance following return.: Compared to both control-matched peers and preoperative careers, we hypothesize that player production based on rate-adjusted contextual statistics will significantly decline following Achilles tendon rupture.

Problem: Adverse events occur in up to 19% of pediatric hospitalized patients, often associated with delays in recognition or treatment. While early detection is recognized as a primary determinant of recovery from deterioration, most research has focused on profiling patient risk and testing interventions, and less on factors that impact surveillance efficacy. This integrative review explored actions and factors that influence the quality of pediatric nursing surveillance.

Background:: Return to play (RTP) of National Football League (NFL) athletes after isolated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears has been reported. However, no studies have reported on RTP of NFL athletes after multiligament knee injuries.

Hypotheses:: NFL athletes with multiligament knee injuries have lower RTP rates and longer recoveries than athletes with isolated ACL tears.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed the incidence and impact of lower extremity bony stress injuries in NBA players from 2005 to 2015, highlighting that these injuries are common during the regular season, especially in the first few weeks, affecting mainly the foot.
  • - A total of 76 stress injuries were identified among 75 players, with players experiencing significant reduced performance, including a decrease in games played and steals per game.
  • - Surgical treatment led to better performance outcomes after two years compared to non-surgical management, indicating that these injuries can adversely affect both immediate and long-term athletic performance.

Study Objective: Proposed national performance measures for severe sepsis or septic shock include interventions within 3 hours of emergency department (ED) arrival rather than from time of first meeting diagnostic criteria. We aim to determine the percentage of ED patients who first meet criteria greater than 3 hours after arrival.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of adult patients with severe sepsis or septic shock in 2 EDs (university hospital [September 2012 to June 2013] and public trauma center [December 2012 to May 2013]).

Based on three surveys of critical care nursing practice around the United States, practice and opinion regarding the nurse's role in PA catheter manipulation is clearly varied. If it is determined that a change in practice is indicated, the scope of practice must be examined. The potential for risk to patients and a facility's cultural and political barriers require discussion and resolution.

A 5-yr study was conducted beginning in 1983 with 460 cows to evaluate the effects of three breeding seasons (30, 45, and 70 d in length) and two times of spring calving, March (early) and April (late), on cattle production under Nebraska Sandhills range conditions. Criteria evaluated included pregnancy and weaning percentages, calving date and distribution, cow weights and body condition at four intervals, calf birth and weaning weights, and cow productivity. The 30-d breeding season included a 10-d estrus synchronization and AI period; in the other breeding seasons only natural breeding was used.

The hypothesis tested was that increasing concentration of 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) subsequent to luteolysis stimulates the preovulatory surge of LH and that a decline in E(2) after the initial rise is not necessary to trigger the preovulatory surge of LH in the bovine female. Beef cows were synchronized to Day 16 of the estrous cycle. At Hour 0, all cows were ovariectomized and received one of four E(2) treatments: 1) luteal phase E(2) (LE; n=5), 2) increasing then decreasing E(2) (DE; n=5), 3) increasing and subsequent maintenance of high E(2) (IE; n=4), and 4) no E(2) (NE; n=3).

The antioxidant propyl gallate, in a deodorant product, caused an allergic contact dermatitis in 1 subject during developmental controlled use testing. Subsequent dose response elicitation studies with this subject revealed a differing threshold of sensitivity to propyl gallate dependent upon application method. Increasing the level of occlusion increased the elicitation response.

Mean concentrations of luteinizing hormone (LH) increase during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle in cows. The working hypotheses in the present study were (1) that increasing concentrations of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) during the follicular phase of the estrous cycle cause an increase in mean concentration of LH by increasing amplitude of pulses of LH, and (2) that increasing E2 concentrations during this stage of the estrous cycle decrease frequency of pulses of LH in bovine females. Day of estrus was synchronized in seventeen mature cows.

This review describes an approach that has been used to assess the skin sensitization risk of new chemicals and product formulations prior to launching the new chemical or product on the market. The risk assessment process utilizes a comparative toxicological approach, in which data on the inherent toxicity of a material, and the exposure to it through manufacturing or consumer use or foreseeable misuse, are integrated and compared with data generated by 'benchmark' materials of similar chemistry or product application, or both. This approach has been valuable in providing an accurate assessment of the skin sensitization potential for a wide range of consumer products and pharmaceuticals, ranging from products with a very transient skin exposure (e.
