Background: Sustainable dietary practices can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote planetary health. The importance of investigating how to promote sustainable dietary practices is therefore crucial. Nature Relatedness measures an individual's connection to nature and can predict environmental concern and stewardship.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic studies have highlighted the need for more diverse research on plasma fibrinogen levels, as previous studies largely focused on Europeans, leading to gaps in understanding and missing heritability.
  • By analyzing data from whole-genome sequencing and genotype data from large cohorts, researchers identified 18 genetic loci related to fibrinogen levels, some of which are more common in African populations and include variants that may impact protein function.
  • The study's findings indicate a connection between fibrinogen levels and various health conditions, emphasizing the importance of whole-genome sequencing in discovering genetic factors in diverse populations and enhancing knowledge about fibrinogen regulation.

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a household food-waste prevention and minimization intervention, titled the Culinary Home Empowerment for Food Waste Prevention and Minimization (CHEF-WPM), which consists of a culinary education video series for home cooks. The specific aims are to (1) assess the effects of the intervention at a population level across process (feasibility, usage, acceptability, satisfaction) and preliminary efficacy (motivation, opportunity, ability) metrics and (2) assess the effects of the intervention at a community level across process (feasibility, usage, acceptability, satisfaction) and preliminary efficacy (motivation, opportunity, ability, household food waste, sustainable dietary practices) metrics. The intervention includes eight modules, each containing three to five brief videos, as well as downloadable recipes and worksheets.

Interacting with nature and a connection to nature (Nature Relatedness [NR]) have been associated with better mental and physical health as well as higher levels of physical activity. However, limited research has explored how interacting with nature and NR may promote healthful dietary behaviors. The purpose of this pilot convergent mixed methods study was to explore the connections between interacting with nature, NR, and dietary choices.

Female cancer survivors have a higher chance of experiencing infertility than females without a history of cancer diagnosis. This risk remains high despite advances in fertility treatments. There is a need to augment fertility treatments with cost-effective methods such as nutritional guidance to improve fertility chances.

Interacting with nature may promote mental and physical health. There are multiple ways to interact with nature: indirectly, incidentally, and intentionally. How these types of interactions with nature may be associated with mental and physical health status and health behaviors is unclear.

  • * Discovery of 7 new genetic loci associated with FVIII and 1 new locus for VWF, supporting their roles in thrombotic outcomes via Mendelian randomization.
  • * Functional testing revealed that silencing genes like B3GNT2 and CD36 impacted FVIII and VWF release from endothelial cells, indicating their potential regulatory roles.

Article Synopsis
  • A genome-wide association study was conducted on thyroid function, analyzing data from up to 271,040 European individuals, focusing on hormones like TSH, FT4, and T3.
  • The study identified 259 significant genetic associations for TSH (61% were novel), and notable findings for FT4 and T3, indicating that specific genes influence thyroid hormone levels and metabolism.
  • The research findings enhance the understanding of thyroid hormone roles and suggest that variations in thyroid function may impact various health conditions including cardiovascular issues, autoimmune diseases, and cancer.

Context: With age, the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism rises. However, incidence and determinants of spontaneous normalization remain largely unknown.

Objective: To investigate incidence and determinants of spontaneous normalization of TSH levels in older adults with subclinical hypothyroidism.

Women with perinatal depression are at a high risk for unhealthy dietary behaviors but whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exacerbated this risk is unknown. Here we report the findings of a qualitative study exploring the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on nutrition-related experiences of women with perinatal depression. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, in-depth interviews were conducted with 18 women with a history of perinatal depression and 10 healthcare providers.

Introduction: Young women diagnosed with cancer are at an increased risk for infertility compared to women without a cancer diagnosis. Consuming a healthful diet comprised of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and unsaturated fats has been found to improve both fertility and cancer survivorship. Given this reason, dietary interventions tailored to support female cancer survivors with fertility challenges are of immense importance.

Background: Women with perinatal depression (PD) are at high risk for unhealthy dietary behaviors and suboptimal child feeding practices. Despite evidence supporting the importance of healthful nutrition-related behaviors during and after pregnancy, few behavioral nutrition interventions for women with PD have been developed. The objectives of this study were to identify nutrition-related challenges and needs among women with PD and to elucidate the role that feeding plays in mother-infant interaction, to inform the development of nutrition interventions.

  • Genetic studies on plasma fibrinogen levels primarily focused on Europeans, revealing numerous associated regions, but there are gaps in understanding due to missing heritability and representation of non-Europeans.
  • The researchers utilized whole genome sequencing (WGS) and array-based genotyping data from large cohorts to identify 18 new genetic loci linked to fibrinogen levels, with some variants more common in African populations.
  • The study highlights the importance of WGS in discovering genetic variations across diverse populations, linking fibrinogen polygenic risk scores to increased risk for thrombotic and inflammatory diseases like gout.

Background: Caesarean section (CS) is widely perceived as protective against obstetric brachial plexus injury (BPI), but few studies acknowledge the factors associated with such injury. The objectives of this study were therefore to aggregate cases of BPI after CS, and to illuminate risk factors for BPI.

Methods: Pubmed Central, EMBASE and MEDLINE databases were searched using free text: ("brachial plexus injury" or "brachial plexus injuries" or "brachial plexus palsy" or "brachial plexus palsies" or "Erb's palsy" or "Erb's palsies" or "brachial plexus birth injury" or "brachial plexus birth palsy") and ("caesarean" or "cesarean" or "Zavanelli" or "cesarian" or "caesarian" or "shoulder dystocia").

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding the genetic basis of memory could help address neurodegenerative disorders, and a study examined this in a large group of adults without dementia or stroke (N=53,637).
  • Researchers identified new genetic locations associated with verbal short-term memory and learning, particularly in the genes CDH18 and APOE/APOC1/TOMM40, with results verified in a separate sample.
  • Analysis showed that a genetic score for verbal learning correlated with brain activity during memory tasks and linked memory traits to various cognitive and health outcomes.
