Safety of Venous Thromboprophylaxis With Low-molecular-weight Heparin in Children With Ulcerative Colitis.

Objectives: To evaluate for increased rectal bleeding following enoxaparin thromboprophylaxis in children hospitalized for ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: Retrospective cohort study (2007--2016) of 218 inpatients with active UC. Patients receiving enoxaparin were compared with a nonenoxaparin-treated patient group.

Management changes for patients with endocrine-related cancers in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Substantial management changes in endocrine-related malignancies have been required as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a draconian reduction in the screening of asymptomatic subjects, delay in planned surgery and radiotherapy for primary tumors deemed to be indolent, and dose reductions and/or delays in initiation of some systemic therapies. An added key factor has been a patient-initiated delay in the presentation because of the fear of viral infection. Patterns of clinical consultation have changed, including a greater level of virtual visits, physical spacing, masking, staffing changes to ensure a COVID-free population and significant changes in patterns of family involvement.

A Unique Case of a Pediatric Patient With Blastic Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell Neoplasm, Guillain Barre Syndrome, and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis.

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm is a rare hematopoietic malignancy with a poor prognosis that is seen primarily in the elderly population. We describe a pediatric patient with blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm who subsequently developed Guillain Barre syndrome followed by hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis. All 3 conditions are uncommon, particularly in the pediatric population.

Embryonal tumors in Canadian children less than 36 months of age: results from the Canadian Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (CPBTC).

Embryonal tumors are a heterogeneous group of central nervous system (CNS) tumors whose subgroups have varying incidence and outcome. Despite these differences, they are often grouped as a single entity for study purposes. To date, there are no Canadian multi-institutional studies examining the incidence and outcome of all embryonal subtypes.

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans provides a unique opportunity to interrogate the neural basis of behavior at single neuron resolution. In C. elegans, neural circuits that control behaviors can be formulated based on its complete neural connection map, and easily assessed by applying advanced genetic tools that allow for modulation in the activity of specific neurons.

Management of hyperglycemia from epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) targeting T790M-mediated resistance.

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients are associated with sensitivity to small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) such as erlotinib, gefitinib, and afatinib. Although studies show an increased progression free survival (PFS) with use of EGFR TKIs in the first-line setting, most patients will develop resistance to therapy after the first 8-16 months. T790M is an acquired resistance mutation reported in 60-70% of patients who initially responded to a prior EGFR TKI.

Development and Monte Carlo Study of a Procedure for Correcting the Standardized Mean Difference for Measurement Error in the Independent Variable.

The standardized mean difference (SMD) is perhaps the most important meta-analytic effect size. It is typically used to represent the difference between treatment and control population means in treatment efficacy research. It is also used to represent differences between populations with different characteristics, such as persons who are depressed and those who are not.

Evaluation of the analytical performance of the Xpert MTB/RIF assay.

We performed the first studies of analytic sensitivity, analytic specificity, and dynamic range for the new Xpert MTB/RIF assay, a nucleic acid amplification-based diagnostic system that detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampin (RIF) resistance in under 2 h. The sensitivity of the assay was tested with 79 phylogenetically and geographically diverse M. tuberculosis isolates, including 42 drug-susceptible isolates and 37 RIF-resistant isolates containing 13 different rpoB mutations or mutation combinations.

An update on the health effects of tomato lycopene.

Lycopene is a non-provitamin A carotenoid that is responsible for the red to pink colors seen in tomatoes, pink grapefruit, and other foods. Processed tomato products are the primary dietary lycopene source in the United States. Unlike many other natural compounds, lycopene is generally stable to processing when present in the plant tissue matrix.

Rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampin resistance by use of on-demand, near-patient technology.

Current nucleic acid amplification methods to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis are complex, labor-intensive, and technically challenging. We developed and performed the first analysis of the Cepheid Gene Xpert System's MTB/RIF assay, an integrated hands-free sputum-processing and real-time PCR system with rapid on-demand, near-patient technology, to simultaneously detect M. tuberculosis and rifampin resistance.

Disappearance of vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease and emergence of serotype 19A in a minority population with a high prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus and low childhood immunization rates.

We analyzed the epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) following introduction of pneumococcal conjugated vaccine in an urban population with a 2% human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence and history of low childhood immunization rates. We observed near-elimination of vaccine-type IPD. Substantial disease remains due to non-vaccine-type pneumococci, highlighting the need to increase pneumococcal immunization among HIV-infected adults.

Risk factors for febrile morbidity after hysterectomy.

Objective: To identify risk factors for febrile morbidity after hysterectomy for nonmalignant indications.

Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of 686 women who had a hysterectomy between January and September 1997 by abdominal (n = 408), laparoscopic-assisted vaginal (n = 90), or vaginal (n = 188) approaches. Potential risk factors for febrile morbidity were extracted from the medical records.
