[Polyarteritis nodosa diagnosed in acute cholecystectomy].

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a serious systemic vasculitis, which untreated has a five year survival rate of less than 15%. In the present case PAN was diagnosticed in a 72-year old Asian woman by microscopy of a gall bladder in acalculous cholecystitis. We conclude that PAN must be considered in patients with symptoms from several different organs and evidence of vascular involvement can be obtained by histological investigation of material from involved organs or mesenterial angiography.

Preparing kids for the new baby.

Sibling prenatal classes are a natural extension of nursing's interest and expertise in childbirth preparation for expectant couples. From parents' perspective, these classes have the potential to decrease sibling rivalry and facilitate parental coping with older children's concerns about a new baby. From a nurse educator's perspective, sibling prenatal classes offer a rich learning experience for students by providing an opportunity to integrate knowledge about pregnancy and birth with communication skills and child development knowledge.

Assessment of ideal neutron beams for neutron capture therapy.

The discrete-ordinates transport computer code DORT has been used to develop a two-dimensional cylindrical phantom model for use as a tool to assess beam design and dose distributions for boron neutron capture therapy. The model uses an S8 approximation for angular fluxes and a P3 Legendre approximation for scattering cross sections. A one-dimensional discrete-ordinates model utilizing the computer code ANISN was used to validate the energy-group structure used in the two-dimensional calculations.

Prevention of nipple tenderness and breast engorgement in the postpartal period.

A study was conducted to identify an effective preparation method for breastfeeding and to develop measurement tools for nipple tenderness and breast engorgement for use in a clinical setting. Twenty-five subjects served as their own controls by preparing one nipple and massaging one breast, either the left or right, but not the other breast or nipple. Nipple tenderness and breast engorgement were recorded on five-point scales.

The clinical nurse specialist: from the outside looking in.

This paper considers the role of the clinical nurse specialist (CNS) as portrayed in the literature. The historical development of the role is highlighted, rationale for preparation at an advanced level presented and controversy regarding placement of the CNS in a line or staff position outlined. Also discussed are the five commonly accepted sub-roles of the CNS (practitioner, educator, consultant, researcher and change agent) as well as a new role (staff advocate) which can be seen to be emerging in the literature.

Illness after influenza vaccination reported through a nationwide surveillance system, 1976-1977.

In 1976, the Center for Disease Control coordinated nationwide surveillance for illnesses after influenza vaccination as part of an effort to vaccinate the nation against influenza A/New Jersey/76. For the 48,161,019 persons vaccinated in 1976, a total of 4733 reports of illness were received which included reports of 223 deaths. When Guillain-Barré syndrome was reported in vaccine recipients, an investigation was begun to examine this possible association.
