Article Synopsis
  • - The text discusses the species composition of the Caryanda tamdaoensis species-group within the Acrididae family, highlighting the description of a new species called Caryanda hongheensis from China.
  • - A new synonym is proposed, reclassifying Caryanda tamdaoensis as the same species as Caryanda aurata, leading to a renaming of the Caryanda aurata group to the Caryanda tamdaoensis group.
  • - Additionally, Caryanda azurea is split into two subspecies: one from Vietnam and another from China, and a key to identify all species and subspecies in this group is provided, along with illustrations for clarity.

New data on distribution, ecology and biology of the rare extant species of the almost completely ancient family Prophalangopsidae (Orthoptera) are given. This montane species prefers humid areas with relatively low summer temperatures. Habits, mating behaviour and life history of are extremely similar to those of the North American representatives of the genus .

An annotated list of 42 species in 26 genera and four families of Orthoptera recorded from Beringia (Northeast Yakutia, Chukotka, Magadan region, and Kamchatka in Russia, Alaska in USA, Yukon and the Northwestern Territories in Canada) is given. The distribution of species is clarified. The exchange of orthopteran faunas between Asia and America by the Bering Land Bridge in Pleistocene was strongly limited.

Whole mitogenomes are a useful data source for a wide variety of research goals due to the vastly cheaper sequencing cost and the far less demanding high-quality templates. The mitogenome has demonstrated great potential in resolving phylogenetic questions in Orthoptera at different taxonomic scales as well as exploring patterns of molecular and morphological character evolutions. In this study, the complete mitogenome of (Zheng, 1977) was sequenced using next-generation sequencing, the characteristics of the mitogenome are presented briefly, and the phylogeny of the Melanoplinae and Catantopinae was reconstructed using a selected dataset of mitogenome sequences under maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference frameworks.

Biofortification of staple crops could help to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies in humans. We show that folates in stored rice grains are unstable, which reduces the potential benefits of folate biofortification. We obtain folate concentrations that are up to 150 fold higher than those of wild-type rice by complexing folate to folate-binding proteins to improve folate stability, thereby enabling long-term storage of biofortified high-folate rice grains.
