Introduction: Pneumonia and anemia are prevalent medical conditions with significant implications on patient health, resulting in numerous hospitalizations and deaths. Various studies have been done on the mortality rates of pneumonia and anemia individually. However, fewer describe the mortality of patients diagnosed with pneumonia superimposed on anemia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects over 1% of population over age 60. It is defined by motor and nonmotor symptoms including a spectrum of cognitive impairments known as Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD). Currently, the only US Food and Drug Administration-approved treatment for PDD is rivastigmine, which inhibits acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase increasing the level of acetylcholine in the brain.

Co-production offers a way to design culturally appropriate information and support, but evidence is needed to understand its implementation in palliative care.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) are short, non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding to messenger RNAs (mRNA).

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communal religious worshippers' mental health and the benefits of positive religious coping.

Background: In the United Kingdom, onsite religious services were halted during COVID-19 lockdowns, which were followed by various levels of restrictions on communal worship including social distancing, mandatory wearing of face masks, adequate ventilation and a ban on congregational singing and chanting. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of closures and changes within places of worship in response to the first lockdown in 2020, to assess the effect of the pandemic on religious practice and worshippers' wellbeing and religious coping.

Methods: Participants were regular worshippers in the UK, recruited through an online survey using convenience sampling.

Laparoscopic-Assisted, Percutaneous Cryoablation: A Novel Technique for the Treatment of Abdominal Wall Soft Tissue Tumors.

Introduction: Percutaneous cryoablation is a first-line therapeutic option for primary neoplasms and metastatic lesions of the musculoskeletal system. Treatment of abdominal wall tumors is challenging as surgical resection can be highly morbid and necessitate complex reconstructive surgery; the efficacy of cryoablation for abdominal wall tumors may be limited by inadequate posterior margins owing to the proximity of intra-abdominal organs. With laparoscopy and insufflation, peritoneal structures can be safely mobilized away from the abdominal wall, allowing for adequate deep margin freeze and visualization of the ice ball.

Evaluation of nurse practitioners' extended scope of practice in a regional hospital emergency department in tropical Australia.

Objectives: There is very little literature examining the workload and impact of nurse practitioners (NPs) working in emergency departments (ED) in regional and rural Australia. The aim of this paper was to review the ED NPs scope of practice in the ED discharge stream and patient outcomes at Cairns Hospital over a 7-month period.

Methods: This retrospective study examined the ED electronic medical record between 14 May 2019 and 31 December 2019.

Proposed Nutrition Competencies for Medical Students and Physician Trainees: A Consensus Statement.

Importance: In 2022, the US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution (House of Representatives Resolution 1118 at the 117th Congress [2021-2022]) calling for meaningful nutrition education for medical trainees. This was prompted by increasing health care spending attributed to the growing prevalence of nutrition-related diseases and the substantial federal funding via Medicare that supports graduate medical education. In March 2023, medical education professional organizations agreed to identify nutrition competencies for medical education.

It has been unequivocally established that kynurenic acid has a number of actions in a variety of cells and tissues, raising, in principle, the possibility of targeting its generation, metabolism or sites of action to manipulate those effects to a beneficial therapeutic end. However, many basic aspects of the biology of kynurenic acid remain unclear, potentially leading to some confusion and misinterpretations of data. They include questions of the source, generation, targets, enzyme expression, endogenous concentrations and sites of action.

Influence of phospholipid head and tail molecular structures on cell membrane mechanical response under tension.

Biological cell membranes are primarily comprised of a diverse lipid bilayer with multiple phospholipid (lipid) types, each of which is comprised of a hydrophilic headgroup and two hydrophobic hydrocarbon tails. The lipid type determines the molecular structure of head and tail groups, which can affect membrane mechanics at nanoscale and subsequently cell viability under mechanical loading. Hence, using molecular dynamics simulations, the current study investigated seven membrane phospholipids and the effect of their structural differences on physical deformation, mechanoporation damage, and mechanical failure of the membranes under tension.

Metabolic Heat Production Modulates the Cardiovascular Drift-V̇O 2max Relationship Independent of Aerobic Fitness in Women.

Introduction/purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that cardiovascular (CV) drift and associated decrements in maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O 2max ) are greater in high-fit compared with low-fit women during exercise at the same %V̇O 2max , but comparable at the same rate of metabolic heat production.

Methods: Six high-fit (HI) and six low-fit (LO) women cycled in 35°C for 15 or 45 min at the same relative intensity (60% V̇O 2max ; 15REL and 45REL) or fixed rate of heat production (500 W; 15FX and 45FX), immediately followed by a graded exercise test to measure V̇O 2max . The separate 15- and 45-min trials permitted measurements of V̇O 2max over the same time interval as CV drift.

The two types of craniopharyngioma, adamantinomatous (ACP) and papillary (PCP), are clinically relevant tumours in children and adults. Although the biology of primary craniopharyngioma is starting to be unravelled, little is known about the biology of recurrence. To fill this gap in knowledge, we have analysed through methylation array, RNA sequencing and pERK1/2 immunohistochemistry a cohort of paired primary and recurrent samples (32 samples from 14 cases of ACP and 4 cases of PCP).

Perturbation of thyroid hormone (T) synthesis is known to cause numerous developmental, metabolic, and cognitive disorders in humans. Due to species differences in sensitivity to chemical exposures, there is a need for human-based approaches that recapitulate thyroid cellular architecture and T production when screening. To address these limitations, primary human thyrocytes, isolated from healthy adult donor tissues and cryopreserved at passage one (p'1) were characterized for cellular composition, 3D follicular architecture, and thyroglobulin (TG)/T expression and inhibition by prototype thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDC).

Can Inexperienced Listeners Hear Who Is Singing? The Role of Motivation in Singer Discrimination Across Pitch.

Objective: Previous research has shown that in a task identifying singers across pitch, inexperienced listeners perform very poorly compared to their experienced counterparts. This poor performance may partially be due to lower motivation and reduced attention on the part of inexperienced listeners. The current experiment is designed to examine the role of motivation in difficult perceptual tasks through use of an established methodology that uses singing voice stimuli.

This work presents the application of AQbD principles to the development of a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) HPLC procedure for the determination of monoclonal antibody (mAb) product purity using state-of-the-art column technology available via the Waters™ XBridge Premier Protein SEC column. Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) emphasizes a systematic, risk-based lifecycle approach to analytical procedure development based on sound statistical methodologies. It has recently become increasingly recommended by regulatory agencies as a response to the need for greater efficiency, improved reliability, and increased robustness among modern analytical procedures in the pharmaceutical industry.

Improving access to general practice for and with people with severe and multiple disadvantage: a qualitative study.

Background: People with severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD) who experience combinations of homelessness, substance misuse, violence, abuse, and poor mental health have high health needs and poor access to primary care.

Aim: To improve access to general practice for people with SMD by facilitating collaborative service improvement meetings between healthcare staff, people with lived experience of SMD, and those who support them; participants were then interviewed about this work.

Design And Setting: The Bridging Gaps group is a collaboration between healthcare staff, researchers, women with lived experience of SMD, and a charity that supports them in a UK city.

The effectiveness of knowledge-sharing techniques and approaches in research funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR): a systematic review.

Background: The National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research to improve people's health and wellbeing. To achieve this aim, effective knowledge sharing (two-way knowledge sharing between researchers and stakeholders to create new knowledge and enable change in policy and practice) is needed. To date, it is not known which knowledge sharing techniques and approaches are used or how effective these are in creating new knowledge that can lead to changes in policy and practice in NIHR funded studies.

TNFR2 signalling in inflammatory diseases.

TNF signals via two receptors, TNFR1 and TNFR2, which play contrasting roles in immunity. Most of the pro-inflammatory effects of TNF are mediated by TNFR1, whereas TNFR2 is mainly involved in immune homeostasis and tissue healing, but also contributes to tumour progression. However, all currently available anti-TNF biologics inhibit signalling via both receptors and there is increasing interest in the development of selective inhibitors; TNFR1 inhibitors for autoimmune disease and TNFR2 inhibitors for cancer.
