Background: Nursing home residents experience a large burden of invasive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. Data are limited regarding nursing home characteristics associated with differences in facility-level invasive MRSA rates.
Methods: We analyzed 2011-2015 data from CDC's Emerging Infections Program (EIP) active population- and laboratory-based surveillance for invasive MRSA cases within seven states.
Predicting long-term recurrence of disease in breast cancer (BC) patients remains a significant challenge for patients with early stage disease who are at low to intermediate risk of relapse as determined using current clinical tools. Prognostic assays which utilize bulk transcriptomics ignore the spatial context of the cellular material and are, therefore, of limited value in the development of mechanistic models. In this study, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) chemical images of BC tissue were used to train deep learning models to predict future disease recurrence.

Immune suppression by seminal fluid has been associated with extracellular vesicles, originally termed prostasomes, which contain CD52, a glycosylated glycophosphoinositol-anchored peptide released from testicular epithelial cells. Previously, we reported that human T cell-derived CD52, bound to the danger-associated molecular pattern protein, high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), suppresses T cell function via the inhibitory sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-10 (Siglec-10) receptor.

Background: Burkholderia pseudomallei, causative agent of melioidosis, is a One Health concern as it is acquired directly from soil and water and causes disease in humans and agricultural and wild animals. We examined B. pseudomallei in soil and goats at a single farm in the Northern Territory of Australia where >30 goats acquired melioidosis over nine years.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an inherited disorder of lipid metabolism that causes marked elevations in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and is associated with premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. A 71-year-old woman with FH, established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and statin intolerance presents to the cardiology clinic to discuss lipid management. Despite having failed combinations of statins, ezetimibe, and 2 proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors that use monoclonal antibodies, she was able to achieve low-risk low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels using a novel way to lower proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 levels with inclisiran.

PARP inhibitor efficacy as monotherapy has been primarily observed in tumors with deleterious genetic variants in genes involved in the homologous recombination repair pathway. Tumors without these variants have also been shown to respond; notably, those with hypermethylation at all alleles of the BRCA1 or RAD51C promoter can respond to PARP inhibitors.

However, significant barriers, including physician and patient factors, prevent the optimal use of this drug class. In this article, we provide 10 clear and simple tips for clinicians when prescribing statins.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFibre optic probe based Raman spectroscopy can deliver molecular compositional analysis of a range of diseases. However, some biological tissues exhibit high levels of fluorescence which limit the utility of the technique, particularly when the fluorescence induces CCD etaloning, which can be particulalry hard to remove in subsequent analysis. Furthermore, use of fibre probes can result in silica signals superimposed on the biological Raman signals.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOur collaboration to strengthen applied practice in public health training between two public universities in New Mexico has offered us insight into the types of institutional, administrative, and programmatic support beneficial for navigating work with limited resources and varying geographic considerations. We share some lessons from this burgeoning partnership between University of New Mexico's (UNM) College of Population Health and New Mexico State University's (NMSU) Department of Public Health Sciences which began in 2022. The main areas of learning focus on exchanging resources to extend relationships with fieldwork sites and site supervisors, engage and support students in their planning and implementation of their fieldwork, and identify institutional resources to maintain and grow programmatic quality.

Methods: 25 men (18-25 years) who had reached the first 6 months of the intervention were interviewed. We used a codebook approach to thematic analysis to analyze the data.
Eosinophilia is a common finding in returning travellers, migrants and other travelling groups. In this setting it often indicates an underlying helminth infection. Infections associated with eosinophilia are frequently either asymptomatic or associated with non-specific symptoms but some can cause severe disease.

One barrier slowing clinical adoption is a lack of evidence demonstrating that data taken on one spectrometer transfers across to data taken on another spectrometer to provide consistent diagnoses.

Extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) occur when stellar-mass compact objects begin a gravitational wave (GW) driven inspiral into massive black holes. EMRI waveforms can precisely map the surrounding spacetime, making them a key target for future space-based GW interferometers such as LISA, but their event rates and parameters are massively uncertain. One of the largest uncertainties is the ratio of true EMRIs (which spend at least thousands of orbits in the LISA band) and direct plunges, which are in-band for at most a handful of orbits and are not detectable in practice.

Visualising lipid content in a non-destructive label-free manner can aid in elucidating the AD phenotypes towards a better understanding of the disease. In this study, we combined multiple optical molecular-specific methods, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic imaging, synchrotron radiation-infrared (SR-IR) microscopy, Raman and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy, and optical-photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) microscopy with multivariate data analysis, to investigate the biochemistry of brain hippocampus in situ using a mouse model of tauopathy (rTg4510).

We evaluated patients switched to faricimab who had previously shown a partial response to other anti-VEGF injections for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular oedema (DMO).

Purpose: Specimen Mammography (SM) is commonly used in Breast Conserving Surgery (BCS) for intraoperative margin analysis. A systematic scoping review was conducted to identify sources of methodological variation in Specimen Mammography Interpretation (SMI) and assess the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to optimise Diagnostic Accuracy (DA).
Methods: Embase, Pubmed, Cochrane and web of science databases were searched.
The absorption of terahertz (THz) radiation by water molecules facilitates its application to several biomedical applications such as cancer detection. Therefore, it is critical for the THz technologies to be characterised with water content in a sample. In this paper, we analyse gelatine phantoms in the THz frequency range, with continuously varying hydration levels as they dry over time.
