Quasi-isentropic compression enables one to study the solidification of metastable liquid states that are inaccessible through other experimental means. The onset of this nonequilibrium solidification is known to depend on the compression rate and material-specific factors, but this complex interdependence has not been well characterized. In this study, we use a combination of experiments, theory, and computational simulations to derive a general scaling law that quantifies this dependence.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOpioid use disorder (OUD), like other substance use disorders (SUDs), is widely understood to be a disorder of persistent relapse. Despite the use of three FDA-approved medications for OUD, typically in conjunction with behavioral treatments, relapse rates remain unacceptably high. Whereas medication assisted therapy (MAT) reduces the risk of opioid overdose mortality, the benefits of MAT are negated when people discontinue the medications.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFSubstance use disorder is challenging to treat due to its relapsing nature. In the last decade, opioid use disorder has been a threat to public health, being declared an epidemic by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is a tragic situation, considering there currently are only three effective, yet not ideal, treatments to prevent relapse to opioids.

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data from dynamically compressed samples provide direct measurements of the elastic compression of the crystal lattice, onset of plastic flow, strength-strain rate dependence, structural phase transitions, and density of crystal defects, such as dislocations. Here, we present a cost-effective, compact, pulsed x-ray source for XRD measurements on pulsed-power-driven ramp-loaded samples.

The method is implemented on Thor, a moderate scale (1-2 MA) pulsed power driver. The electrical conductivity of copper at elevated temperature (>4000 K) and pressure (>10 GPa) is determined, and a new tabular material model is developed, guided by density functional theory, which preserves agreement with existing experimental data.

In particular, atomic crystal phase transitions and mesoscale coalescence of PbS and PbSe nanocrystals have been observed and monitored in situ respectively by wide- and small-angle synchrotron X-ray scattering techniques. At the atomic scale, both nanocrystals underwent reversible structural transformations from cubic to orthorhombic at significantly higher pressures than those for the corresponding bulk materials.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOpioid use disorder (OUD) causes the death of nearly 130 Americans daily. It is evident that new avenues for treatment are needed. To this end, studies have reported that 'satiety' agents such as the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist, exendin-4 (Ex-4), decreases responding for addictive drugs such as cocaine, nicotine, alcohol, and oxycodone, but no work has been done with heroin.

Even though high-pressure research on nanomaterials has been widely conducted, their shape-dependent phase transition behavior still remains unclear. Examples of phase transitions of CdS nanoparticles are very limited, despite the fact that it is one of the most studied wide band gap semiconductors.

The design consists of up to 288 decoupled and transit time isolated capacitor-switch units, called "bricks," that can be individually triggered to achieve a high degree of pulse tailoring for magnetically driven isentropic compression experiments (ICE) [D.
