Small-angle rigid-unit modes requiring linear strain compensation.

Group-theoretical and linear-algebraic methods and tools have recently been developed that aim to exhaustively identify the small-angle rotational rigid-unit modes (RUMs) of a given framework material. But in their current form, they fail to detect RUMs that require a compensating lattice strain which grows linearly with the amplitude of the rigid-unit rotations. Here, we present a systematic approach to including linear strain compensation within the linear-algebraic RUM-search method, so that any geometrically possible small-angle RUM can be detected.

Optimization of swim depth across diverse taxa during horizontal travel.

Semiaquatic taxa, including humans, often swim at the air-water interface where they waste energy generating surface waves. For fully marine animals however, theory predicts the most cost-efficient depth-use pattern for migrating, air-breathing species that do not feed in transit is to travel at around 2 to 3 times the depth of their body diameter, to minimize the vertical distance traveled while avoiding wave drag close to the surface. This has rarely been examined, however, due to depth measurement resolution issues at the surface.

Recording sand temperatures has become routine at many sea turtle nesting sites across the world given the impacts of incubation temperatures on hatchling sex ratios. However, the extent of thermal variability found at a nesting site has previously received little attention. Here we examine empirical sand temperature records across five atolls extending 250 km in the Chagos archipelago, Indian Ocean, between October 2012 and July 2023 and quantify the extent of spatial and temporal thermal variability.

Foot stance and club type's relationship with lead knee joint biomechanics and possible involvement with injury incidences in amateur golfers have not been evaluated. This study included 16 male right-handed amateur golfers who performed golf swings with 2 different foot stances (straight and open) using 4 different club types (driver, 3 iron, 6 iron, and 9 iron) while standing on 2 force plates in a motion capture laboratory. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) involves progressive motor neuron loss, leading to paralysis and death typically within 3-5 years of diagnosis. Dysfunctional astrocytes may contribute to disease and glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can be protective. Here we show that human neural progenitor cells transduced with GDNF (CNS10-NPC-GDNF) differentiated to astrocytes protected spinal motor neurons and were safe in animal models.

What Young People Think About Music, Rhythm and Trauma: An Action Research Study.

A number of popular theories about trauma have suggested rhythm has potential as a mechanism for regulating arousal levels. However, there is very little literature examining this proposal from the perspective of the young people who might benefit. This action research project addresses this gap by collaborating with four groups of children in the out-of-home-care system to discover what they wanted from music therapists who brought a strong focus on rhythm-based activities.

The Current Use of Lumbar Puncture in a General Paediatric Unit.

Aim This study evaluated the use of Lumbar Puncture (LP) in a general paediatric unit over a 3-year period. Methods Index patients, who had a successful LP, were identified from the microbiology database and failed LP procedures were identified from a chart review of the serum PCR database. A user-friendly web-based software tool called '' is introduced for detecting cooperative rigid-unit modes (RUMs) in networks of interconnected rigid units ( molecules, clusters or polyhedral units). This tool implements a recently described algorithm in which symmetry-mode patterns of pivot-atom rotation and displacement vectors are used to construct a linear system of equations whose null space consists entirely of RUMs. The symmetry modes are first separated into independent symmetry-mode blocks and the set of equations for each block is solved separately by singular value decomposition.

Acute Illness and Death in Children With Adrenal Insufficiency.

Background: Adrenal Insufficiency (AI) can lead to life-threatening Adrenal Crisis (AC) and Adrenal Death (AD). Parents are trained to prevent, recognise and react to AC but there is little available information on what parents are actually doing at home to manage symptomatic AI.

Methods: Three approaches were taken: (A) A retrospective analysis of patient characteristics in children and young people with AD over a 13-year period, (B) An interview-aided questionnaire to assess the circumstances around AC in children currently in our adrenal clinic, and (C) a separate study of parent perceptions of the administration of parenteral hydrocortisone.
