Obesity as a Risk Factor for the Severity of COVID-19 in Pediatric Patients: Possible Mechanisms-A Narrative Review.

Obesity, the current pandemic, is associated with alarming rises among children and adolescents, and the forecasts for the near future are worrying. The present paper aims to draw attention to the short-term effects of the excess adipose tissue in the presence of a viral infection, which can be life-threatening for pediatric patients, given that the course of viral infections is often severe, if not critical. The COVID-19 pandemic has been the basis of these statements, which opened the door to the study of the repercussions of obesity in the presence of a viral infection.

Assessing the role of actors in river restoration: A network perspective.

The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the actors involved in river restoration in Romania by untangling the complex networks that they are part of. When entering aquatic ecosystems, the mine water can cause significant changes in the species' trophic levels, therefore a treatment is required to adjust the alkalinity and to remove the heavy metals and metalloids. The conventional mine water treatment removes metals, but in many cases it does not reduce the sulfate content.

Background: Romania is one of the European countries reporting very high antimicrobial resistance (AMR) rates and consumption of antimicrobials. We aimed to characterize the AMR profiles and clonality of 304 multi-drug resistant (MDR) Acinetobacter baumannii (Ab) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) strains isolated during two consecutive years (2018 and 2019) from hospital settings, hospital collecting sewage tanks and the receiving wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in the main geographical regions of Romania.

Remote Sensing System for Motor Nerve Impulse.

In this article, we present our research achievements regarding the development of a remote sensing system for motor pulse acquisition, as a first step towards a complete neuroprosthetic arm. We present the fabrication process of an implantable electrode for nerve impulse acquisition, together with an innovative wirelessly controlled system. In our study, these were combined into an implantable device for attachment to peripheral nerves.

Positivity Trends of Bacterial Cultures from Cases of Acute and Chronic Periprosthetic Joint Infections.

Background: There is no clear distinction in the literature regarding the positivity trends of bacterial cultures in acute and chronic prosthetic joint infections.

Methods: We prospectively included in this study all consecutive patients, aged over 18 years, that were hospitalized from September 2016 through December 2019, that underwent a joint arthroplasty revision surgery.

Results: Forty patients were included in our analysis, 11 acute/acute hematogenous and 29 chronic PJIs.

Absorbable organic halogens (AOX) are a global parameter which refers to a group of chemical compounds that contain one or more chlorine, bromine or iodine atoms in their molecule and can easily adsorb on activated carbon. The global concern related to the occurrence of the AOX compounds in the environment is due to their toxic and mutagenic effects on aquatic organisms and their potential role as inhibitors of microorganism growth, even at AOX low concentrations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the presence, occurrence and composition of absorbable organic halogens in wastewater and sewage sludge.

Background: Azacitidine (AZA) is approved for the treatment of high-risk chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) of myelodysplastic (MD) subtype. Data of response rates using the specific response criteria for this disease are scarce.
