Heavier Diferrocenylpnictogenium Ions.

The synthesis, characterization and reactivity of the diferrocenylphosphenium ion [FcP] was extended to the heavier diferrocenylpnictogenium ions, [FcE] (E=As, Sb, Bi). The lighter diferrocenylnitrenium ion, [FcN], was detected by mass spectrometry, but could not be isolated. The molecular structures of [FcE] (E=P, As, Sb, Bi) reveal intramolecular coordination of the iron atoms, which counterbalance the electron deficiency of the pnictogens without affecting the strong Lewis acidities, which were determined according to the method of Gutmann and Beckett.

Electronic Coupling in Triferrocenylpnictogens.

From a fundamental perspective, studies of novel mixed-valent complexes containing ferrocenyl units are motivated by the prospect of improving and extending electron transfer models and theories. Here, the series of triferrocenylpnictogens FcE was extended to the heavier analogues (E = As, Sb, and Bi), and the influence of the bridging atom was investigated with FcP as a reference. Electrochemical studies elucidate the effect of electrostatic contribution on the large redox splitting (Δ ) exhibited by the compounds and solvent stabilization in the case of FcAs.

TSLP as a Potential Therapy in the Treatment of CRLF2 B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Cytokine receptor-like factor 2 B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (CRLF2 B-ALL) is a high-risk subtype characterized by CRLF2 overexpression with poor survival rates in children and adults. CRLF2 and interleukin-7 receptor alpha (IL-7Rα) form a receptor for the cytokine thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), which induces JAK/STAT and PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway signals. Previous studies from our group showed that low TSLP doses increased STAT5, AKT, and S6 phosphorylation and contributed to CRLF2 B-ALL cell survival.

Preclinical study analysis of massive magnesium alloy graft for calcaneal fractures.

The highly comminuted calcaneal fractures represent a challenge for surgeons and require bone grafts for a good clinical outcome. Postoperative results are generally associated with increased morbidity and long periods of inactivity. The biomedical community promotes the use of artificial materials for grafts in order to achieve improved results.

Bulky Polyfluorinated Terphenyldiphenylboranes: Water Tolerant Lewis Acids.

Protocols for the synthesis of the bulky polyfluorinated triarylboranes 2,6-(C F ) C F B(C F ) (1), 2,6-(C F ) C F B[3,5-(CF ) C H ] (2), 2,4,6-(C F ) C H B(C F ) (3), 2,4,6-(C F ) C H B[3,5-(CF ) C H ] (4) were developed. All boranes are water tolerant and according to the Gutmann-Beckett method, 1-3 display Lewis acidities larger than that of the prominent B(C F ) .

Effectiveness of Intrapleural Tissue Plasminogen Activator and Dornase Alfa vs Tissue Plasminogen Activator Alone in Children with Pleural Empyema: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Importance: Clinical guidelines recommend that children with pleural empyema be treated with chest tube insertion and intrapleural fibrinolytics. The addition of dornase alfa (DNase) has been reported to improve outcomes in adults but remains unproven in children.

Objective: To determine if intrapleural tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and DNase is more effective than tPA and placebo at reducing hospital length of stay in children with pleural empyema.

Expression of Exogenous Cytokine in Patient-derived Xenografts via Injection with a Cytokine-transduced Stromal Cell Line.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mice are produced by transplanting human cells into immune deficient mice. These models are an important tool for studying the mechanisms of normal and malignant hematopoiesis and are the gold standard for identifying effective chemotherapies for many malignancies. PDX models are possible because many of the mouse cytokines also act on human cells.

Implantology has been an important component of dental management for over forty years, and during that period, many configurations of implant materials and methods have been developed. As empirical and clinical research yield new implant materials, there has been need to test and compare these materials to provide the most cost-effective and efficient implants. Evaluation of efficiency of implants has relied heavily on histological and radiological methods, but these one-dimensional measurement methods fail to evaluate the osteoblastic activity and osseointegration properties of putative implants.

Vitamin D concentrations among healthy children in Calgary, Alberta.

Objective: To examine the relationship between serum vitamin D concentrations, dietary intake and body mass index among healthy children living in Calgary, Alberta.

Methods: The present cross-sectional study included healthy children two to 13 years of age who presented to the Alberta Children's Hospital for elective surgery during a 12-month period. Data including the child's weight, height, age, sex, ethnicity, dietary intake, use of vitamin supplements, physical activity and time spent outdoors were collected.

Comparative study of osteoblastic activity of same implants (Endopore) in the immediate extraction site utilizing single photon emission computerized tomography: peri-implant autogeneous bone grafting with GTR versus no peri-implant bone grafting--experimental study in pig model.

The study was designed to exploit the single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) to compare osteoblastic activity of two implant systems: an Endopore implant (Beaded implants) placed immediately into an extraction socket in conjunction with peri-implant autogenous grafting supplemented with a guided tissue regeneration (GTR) technique, and an Endopore implant placed immediately into the extraction socket without peri-implant grafting and GTR. Endopore implants of the same size (12 mm x 4.1 mm INT-Hex) were placed in fresh extraction sockets in the canine-tooth region of the pigs jaw.

Anti-myelin antibodies modulate clinical expression of childhood multiple sclerosis.

Anti-myelin basic protein (MBP) antibodies in pediatric-onset MS and controls were characterized. Serum samples were obtained from 94 children with MS and 106 controls. Paired CSF and serum were obtained from 25 children with MS at time of their initial episode of acute demyelinating syndrome (ADS).

A long-term study of apicoectomy and endodontic treatment of apically infected cheek teeth in 12 horses.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of apicoectomy and retrograde endodontic treatment in 12 horses with apical cheek teeth infections. The affected apices were removed using a diamond bur mounted on a dental drill, and after pulp removal the root canals were filed with Hedstrøm files and then alternately flushed with sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. The pulp canals were dried and filled with endodontic cement and gutta-percha points.

Clinical features and viral serologies in children with multiple sclerosis: a multinational observational study.
