Local environment in biomolecular condensates modulates enzymatic activity across length scales.

The mechanisms that underlie the regulation of enzymatic reactions by biomolecular condensates and how they scale with compartment size remain poorly understood. Here we use intrinsically disordered domains as building blocks to generate programmable enzymatic condensates of NADH-oxidase (NOX) with different sizes spanning from nanometers to microns. These disordered domains, derived from three distinct RNA-binding proteins, each possessing different net charge, result in the formation of condensates characterized by a comparable high local concentration of the enzyme yet within distinct environments.

Bifidobacteria are early colonizers of the human gut and play central roles in human health and metabolism. To thrive in this competitive niche, these bacteria evolved the capacity to use complex carbohydrates, including mammalian N-glycans. Herein, we elucidated pivotal biochemical steps involved in high-mannose N-glycan utilization by Bifidobacterium longum.

Biodegradable film for raisins packaging application: Evaluation of physico-chemical characteristics and antioxidant potential.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of a biodegradable film, based on grape seed flour extract, for raisin packaging. Physico-chemical characteristics (moisture, total soluble solids, total acidity, pH), total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were evaluated during 182 days of storage at 20 °C, compared to a poly(ethylene) film packaging. After 182 days, the use of biodegradable film increased raisin moisture and pH, decreased total soluble solids and total acidity of raisin compared to the use of poly(ethylene) film.

Current evidence between hospital volume and perioperative outcome: Prospective assessment of robotic radical prostatectomy safety profile in a regional center of medium annual caseload.

Introduction: We aimed to present the safety profile of robotic radical prostatectomy (RARP) performed in a single center of medium surgical volume since its introduction and identify predictors of postoperative complications.

Five years after the first state-of-the-art report on Commercial Visual Analytics Systems we present a reevaluation of the Big Data Analytics field. We build on the success of the 2012 survey, which was influential even beyond the boundaries of the InfoVis and Visual Analytics (VA) community. While the field has matured significantly since the original survey, we find that innovation and research-driven development are increasingly sacrificed to satisfy a wide range of user groups.

The outcome of prostate cancer patients treated with curative intent strongly depends on survival after metastatic progression.

Background: Five-year survival in patients with localized prostate cancer (PCa) is nearly 100%, but metastatic disease still remains incurable. Clinical management of metastatic patients has become increasingly complex as novel therapeutic strategies have emerged. This study aims at evaluating the impact of the first metastatic progression on the outcome of PCa patients treated with curative intent.

Humans play a central role in generating knowledge from the snippets of evidence emerging from visual data analysis. Although prior research provides frameworks that generalize this process, their scope is often narrowly focused so they do not encompass different perspectives at different levels.

[Manually-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy].

The number of patients suffering from terminal renal failure awaiting kidney transplantation has continued to increase. Since the number of available cadaver donor kidneys has largely remained unchanged, a special publicity campaign achieved that almost one-half of the kidneys transplanted in Basle come from live donors. We performed a laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy in 14 patients between March 1998 and August 1999.

Imaging findings in idiopathic pelvic fibrosis.

Two patients presented with ureteric obstruction, and voiding symptoms and constipation, respectively, and were examined by means of intravenous urography and computed tomography. One patient was additionally examined by means of MR tomography. After CT (performed in both patients) and MRT (performed in one patient) had shown a diffuse, contrast-enhancing, infiltrating process in the small pelvis with infiltration of adjacent organs and vessels, surgical biopsy proved the diagnosis of idiopathic pelvic fibrosis.

Urinary level of nuclear matrix protein 22 in the diagnosis of bladder cancer: experience with 130 patients with biopsy confirmed tumor.

Purpose: We prospectively evaluated the value of nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP22dagger) and cytology in the diagnosis of bladder cancer.

Materials And Methods: We analyzed NMP22 in voided urine from 235 patients before cystoscopy. Of the patients 130 had transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder and subsequently underwent surgery.

Life-threatening spontaneous retroperitoneal bleeding: a rare complication of oral anticoagulation.

In a patient on oral anticogulation with sudden onset of loin pain, the possibility of spontaneous bleeding in the retroperitoneum must be considered in the differential diagnosis of renal colic. This rare pathology can be life-threatening, and rapid diagnosis with ultrasound and computerized tomography of the abdomen must be made. If the patient is hemodynamically stable, a conservative approach is justified.

[Staging and therapeutic options in local prostatic carcinoma].

Since the introduction of prostate specific antigen (PSA) into widespread use in clinical practice for early detection of prostate cancer (PCa), in combination with digital rectal examination (DRE), there has been a marked increase in the incidence of localized, potentially curable, disease coupled with a simultaneous decline in regional and metastatic prostate cancer in the least years. After the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the prostate has been histologically confirmed, an accurate assessment of the stage--or extent--of the disease should be made. We will provide a critical assessment of the currently employed PCa staging modalities.

Transurethral resection of the prostate remains the most common method for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Due to unsatisfactory results in about 18% of the patients new methods to treat BPH have been developed. We evaluated 45 patients 6 and 12 months after transurethral microwave thermotherapy using the Prostatron device with Prostasoft 2.
