Design and Evaluation of a Low-Cost Mount for Attaching a Laser Tracker's SMR to a Robot Flange.

Robot calibration and modelling measurements are commonly performed using a laser tracker. To capture three-dimensional positions, a SMR is attached to the robot. While some researchers employ adhesive bonds for this purpose, such methods often result in inaccurate, unstable and non-repeatable SMR positioning, adversely affecting measurement precision and the traceability of research outcomes.

Optimal supply chains and power sector benefits of green hydrogen.

Green hydrogen can help to decarbonize parts of the transportation sector, but its power sector interactions are not well understood so far. It may contribute to integrating variable renewable energy sources if production is sufficiently flexible in time. Using an open-source co-optimization model of the power sector and four options for supplying hydrogen at German filling stations, we find a trade-off between energy efficiency and temporal flexibility.

Mass Spectrometry Evaluation of Biomarkers in the Vitreous Fluid in Gaucher Disease Type 3 with Disease Progression Despite Long-Term Treatment.

Intraocular lesions have been infrequently reported in patients with Gaucher disease type 3 (GD3). We previously reported siblings with GD3 who responded well to the combination of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and substrate reduction therapy (SRT). Here we report progressive bilateral vitreous and preretinal deposits with declining visual acuity requiring bilateral vitrectomies in one of these siblings.

Stress Doppler echocardiography for early detection of systemic sclerosis-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Introduction: In patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (SSc-APAH) is the leading cause of death. The objective of this prospective screening study was to analyse sensitivity and specificity of stress Doppler echocardiography (SDE) in detecting pulmonary hypertension (PH).

Methods: Pulmonary artery pressures and further parameters of PH were assessed by echocardiography and right heart catheterisation (RHC) at rest and during exercise in patients with SSc.

Exercise training in pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with connective tissue diseases.

Introduction: The objective of this prospective study was to assess short- and long-term efficacy of exercise training (ET) as add-on to medical therapy in patients with connective tissue disease-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (CTD-APAH).

Methods: Patients with invasively confirmed CTD-APAH received ET in-hospital for 3 weeks and continued at home for 12 weeks. Efficacy parameters have been evaluated at baseline and after 15 weeks by blinded-observers.

Teleophthalmology screening for diabetic retinopathy through mobile imaging units within Canada.

Background: This study aimed to describe and measure the health results of a Category 3 teleophthalmology screening project for diabetic retinopathy (DR). Implemented through mobile screening imaging units located within pharmacies, the project had the goal of reaching unscreened diabetic patients in urban communities while lowering barriers to screening and saving medical resources.

Methods: Image capture of both eyes of 3505 known diabetic individuals was performed in the provinces of Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

A picture worth remembering: posttraumatic Purtscher's retinopathy in a child.

Purtscher's retinopathy is frequently described and reviewed in the ophthalmology literature but is rarely described in the neurology literature, although neurologists are routinely involved in the care of head and chest trauma patients with abnormal neurologic and funduscopic findings. The case of a 6-year-old girl with Purtscher's retinopathy is described, and the relevant literature is reviewed.

West Nile chorioretinitis.

Case Report: The clinical course of 2 Canadian cases of West Nile chorioretinitis is described. The patients developed visual-field disturbances shortly after flu-like illnesses and were referred for retinal evaluation. Full ophthalmologic examination included Snellen visual acuity testing, applanation tonometry, slit-lamp examination, dilated fundus examination, fundus photography, and fluorescein angiography.

Visual recovery after retinal detachment.

Visual recovery after successful surgery for the macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment continues to be an important topic for ophthalmologists. Recent studies have shown that despite the intuitive notion regarding outcomes in macula-off detachment, there is no improvement in final visual acuity despite more expedient repair within the first week. Macula-off detachments can therefore be treated with less urgency and can wait for the next scheduled available operating room time.

Orbital granulocytic sarcoma.

Aim: Orbital granulocytic sarcoma is a localised tumour composed of cells of myeloid origin. Histological diagnosis can be difficult in patients with poorly differentiated orbital tumours and no evidence of systemic leukaemia. The naphthol AS-D chloracetate esterase (Leder stain) and immunohistochemical stains for lysozyme and MAC387 were used to determine the staining characteristics of these tumours.

Thymic carcinoma metastatic to the orbit.

Purpose: To report a case of small cell carcinoma of the thymus metastatic to the orbit.

Methods: At age 37 years, a man who had been previously diagnosed and treated for small cell carcinoma of the thymus was initially examined for vertical diplopia and left proptosis. Computed tomographic scan disclosed a soft tissue mass in the superior aspect of the left orbit.

Clinically suspected primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction: clinicopathologic review of 150 patients.

Purpose: The incidence of lacrimal sac pathology in patients with clinically suspected primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction is unknown. This is an important issue when considering the potential risk of either conservative nonsurgical management or laser dacryocystorhinostomy, neither of which permits direct visualization and biopsy of the lacrimal outflow apparatus.

Methods: A total of 162 lacrimal sac biopsy specimens were obtained in 150 consecutive patients undergoing external or endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy for clinical primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction from January 1992 to October 1994.

Antibodies to DNA, chromatin core particles and histones in mice with graft-versus-host disease and their involvement in glomerular injury.

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) was induced in female (C57 B10S/DBA/2)F1 hybrid mice with two successive injections of lymphoid cells from parental DBA/2 strain. Serial bleedings of 27 GVHD mice were screened with a panel of antigens including the five histones H1, H2A, H2B, H3 and H4, 15 histone peptides, core particles, dsDNA, heat-shock proteins hsp70 and ubiquitin, a branched peptide of ubiquitinated H2A (U-H2A), poly(ADP-ribose) and SSB/La protein. The predominant IgG response to histone peptides was directed against regions 204-218 of H1, 1-25 of H2B and 1-29 of H4.

A prospective study of the migration of two acetabular components. PCA versus RM cups.

Fifty-nine PCA cups and 61 hydroxyapatite-coated RM cups were included in a prospective randomised study with a mean follow up of 5.2 years. Clinical evaluation revealed better results with the RM cup.

A role for histones and ubiquitin in lupus nephritis?

Glomerulonephritis frequently develops in Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) but the pathogenesis is still poorly understood. Experimental evidence now suggests that histones can participate in immune complex formation in lupus nephritis. In a retrospective study, using samples from Northern and Southern Europe, Japan and South America, we searched for glomerular deposits of histones, both in native and ubiquitinated forms, in renal biopsy specimens from 48 patients with SLE and 70 cases of glomerulonephritis from patients without SLE.

The role of cationic proteins in the pathogenesis of immune complex glomerulonephritis.

In spite of intensive endeavours, attempts to identify nephritogenic antigens in cases of immune complex glomerulonephritis have not yielded convincing results. Cationic antigens can have high affinity for the glomerular basement membrane and are prime candidates as nephritogens. They can be expected to play a role in post-infectious and in autoimmune glomerular disease.
