Increased dietary salt intake was used as a nonpharmacological tool to blunt hypotension-induced increases in plasma renin activity (PRA) in order to evaluate the contribution of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) to hypotension-induced thirst. Rats were maintained on 8% NaCl (high) or 1% NaCl (standard) diet for at least 2 wk, and then arterial hypotension was produced by administration of the arteriolar vasodilator diazoxide. Despite marked reductions in PRA, rats maintained on the high-salt diet drank similar amounts of water, displayed similar latencies to drink, and had similar degrees of hypotension compared with rats maintained on the standard diet.

Object: Accumulation of protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) in malignant gliomas is induced by 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). Because PPIX is a potent photosensitizer, the authors sought to discover whether its accumulation might be exploited for use in photoirradiation therapy of experimental brain tumors, without injuring normal or edematous brain.

Methods: Thirty rats underwent craniotomy and were randomized to the following groups: 1) photoirradiation of cortex (200 J/cm2, 635-nm argon-dye laser); 2) photoirradiation of cortex (200 J/cm2) 6 hours after intravenous administration of 5-ALA (100 mg/kg body weight); 3) cortical cold injury for edema induction; 4) cortical cold injury with simultaneous administration of 5-ALA (100 mg/kg body weight) and photoirradiation of cortex (200 J/cm2) 6 hours later; or 5) irradiation of cortex (200 J/cm2) 6 hours after intravenous administration of Photofrin II (5 mg/kg body weight).

Objectives: Insulin-treated patients with diabetes are at a higher risk than the general population in causing traffic accidents due to hypoglycaemias. Preceding investigations focused on insulin-treated patients and hypoglycaemia-induced accidents as "end-points". Suddenly unable to walk, I found resources for facing disability in the works of Aristotle and Nietzsche, even though their respective ethical schemes are incommensurable. Implementing Amélie Rorty's notion of crop rotation, I show how each scheme offers the patient something quite indispensable, having to do with how each has its own judgmentally-motivated psychological underpinnings. Aristotle's notion of empathy, wherein the moral move occurs whenever we take up someone else's good as our own, is empowering, especially to those who face an imperiled embodiment.

Two studies demonstrated that attempts to debias hindsight by thinking about alternative outcomes may backfire and traced this to the influence of subjective accessibility experiences. Participants listed either few (2) or many (10) thoughts about how an event might have turned out otherwise. Listing many counterfactual thoughts was experienced as difficult and consistently increased the hindsight bias, presumably because the experienced difficulty suggested that there were not many ways in which the event might have turned out otherwise.

Based on the current understanding of the immune response, we present what we believe to be a new model of intrahost virus dynamics. The model takes into account the relationship between virus replication rate and the level of antigen displayed by infected cells, and shows how the cell-directed immune response controls both virus load and virus replication rate. In contrast to conventional wisdom, it shows that the predominant virus variant does not necessarily have the highest replication rate.

The central neural circuit mediating baroreceptor control of sympathetic vasomotor outflow involves an excitatory projection from arterial baroreceptors to nucleus tractus solitarius, an excitatory projection from nucleus tractus solitarius to the caudal ventrolateral medulla, an inhibitory projection from the caudal ventrolateral medulla to the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), and an excitatory projection from the RVLM to sympathetic preganglionic neurons in the spinal cord. For this circuit to be operational, the relevant neurons in the RVLM must be tonically active. Indeed, numerous studies have demonstrated that RVLM vasomotor neurons are tonically active; however, little is known regarding the nature of the tonic excitatory drive to these neurons.
