Achieving greater independence for individuals with mental retardation depends upon the acquisition of several key skills, including time-management and scheduling skills. The ability to perform tasks according to a schedule is essential to domains like independent living and employment. The use of a portable schedule prompting system to increase independence and self-regulation in time-management for individuals with mental retardation was examined.

From January 1999 to March 2000, 101 female adolescents who met the DSM-IV criteria for an eating disorder were followed up in a tertiary care pediatric treatment center. They were asked to participate in a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire assessing substance use and investigating reasons for use and nonuse; 95 agreed to participate and 77 completed the questionnaire (mean age, 15.

Objective: To assess the discriminative and predictive validity of the Quebec Task Force Classification for workers during the subacute phase of disability from back pain.
Summary Of Background Data: The Quebec Task Force Classification was designed for clinical decision making, prognosis establishment, quality of care evaluation, and scientific research in low back pain.
The morphological variation of three representative isolates of the 'Irish group' of Heterorhabditis was examined. First generation hermaphrodites were characterised by having a blunt and mucronate tail. Females (second generation) and third-stage infective juveniles were also distinguished by the morphology of the tail and the presence of a refractile projection in the tail tip.

In this didactic exercise, modern-day physicians seek an imaginary medical consultation with Professor Sir Hans Krebs because of an unusual finding in his area of expertise: a very severe degree of hyperglycaemia. Although Professor Krebs is restricted to data prior to World War II, this does not prevent him from making novel discoveries.

Objective: The effect of wet-wrap dressings was investigated in a controlled trial comparing a steroid (mometasone furoate 0.1%)-containing and a steroid-free (vehicle) preparation in an in-patient comparison study.

This parameter reviews the current state of the prevention and management of child and adolescent aggressive behavior in psychiatric institutions, with particular reference to the indications and use of seclusion and restraint. It also presents guidelines that have been developed in response to professional, regulatory, and public concern about the use of restrictive interventions with aggressive patients with regard to personal safety and patient rights. The literature on the use of seclusion, physical restraint, mechanical restraint, and chemical restraint is reviewed, and procedures for carrying out each of these interventions are described.

This practice parameter describes treatment with stimulant medication. It uses an evidence-based medicine approach derived from a detailed literature review and expert consultation. Stimulant medications in clinical use include methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, mixed-salts amphetamine, and pemoline.

Phylogenetic relationships among 21 Steinernema species were estimated using 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences and morphological characters. Sequences of the rDNA internal transcribed spacers were obtained to provide additional molecular characters to resolve relationships among Steinernema carpocapsae, Steinernema scapterisci, Steinernema siamkavai, and Steinernema monticolum.

Time course studies revealed that NEM rapidly depleted keratinocytes of reduced glutathione (GSH), which was followed by rapidly increasing levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and subsequently by phosphorylation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Pretreatment with antioxidants or enhanced catalase activity in keratinocytes inhibited ROS/H(2)O(2) accumulation and EGFR phosphorylation, demonstrating that H(2)O(2) production is a mediator required for EGFR phosphorylation.

The coherent transients are measured directly on the excited state population on an ultrashort time scale. A sharp step corresponds to the passage through resonance.

The isolates were from Mediterranean (Sinop from Turkey, SN from France, and Monterey from California), subtropical (Rafaela from Argentina), and tropical (MG-14 from Hawaii) regions. All isolates caused 100% mortality of wax moth larvae and developed and produced progeny between 8 and 25 degrees C.

For the first and second generation female, the location of the vulva, shape of the vulval lips, and shape and length of the tail were newly observed diagnostic characters. A more detailed description of the morphology of the male spicules and gubernaculum, and the arrangement of the genital papillae is included.

Although SSRIs are believed to have a milder side effect profile than the tricyclic antidepressants, there are some potentially serious side effects. These include hyponatremia, which has been seen with each of the SSRIs.

Research on these disorders is needed and requires valid methods of classification of the disorders for epidemiologic studies and measurement of their impact on functional status. This commentary discusses the methodologic aspects of classification and functional status assessment in upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders.

A screen conducted to find the yeast genes necessary for its fungicidal action identified two novel syringomycin E response genes, SYR3 and SYR4. A syr3 mutant allele was complemented by ELO2 and ELO3.

Objectives: To estimate the association between level of cigarette smoking and the prevalence and severity of back pain.
The SEC14 gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae encodes a phosphatidylinositol transfer protein required for secretory protein movement from the Golgi. Mutation of SAC1, a gene of unknown function, restores secretory flow in sec14-1(ts) strains. The existing model for the bypass of the sec14-1(ts) defect by sac1-22 involves stimulation of sphingolipid biosynthesis and, in particular, the synthesis of mannosyl-diinositolphosphoryl-ceramide with concomitant increases in Golgi diacylglycerol levels.
