Article Synopsis
  • Researchers wanted to see if taking selenium would help improve the quality of life for people with autoimmune thyroiditis.
  • They studied 412 patients over 12 months by giving some of them selenium and others a placebo (fake pill), but found that both groups felt similarly about their quality of life after a year.
  • Even though selenium lowered certain antibody levels in the blood, it didn't change how much medication the patients needed or make them feel any better than those who didn’t take it.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to examine the relationship between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and bone mineral density (BMD) in 147 adults undergoing liver biopsies and DXA scans.
  • The participants included 53% with steatosis, 25% with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and 23% without NAFLD (controls), but the BMD results showed no significant differences between these groups.
  • Findings suggest that the severity of NAFLD (assessed by NAFLD activity score) does not affect BMD, indicating that steatosis and NASH do not harm bone mineral density in these relatively young patients.

Exercise addiction describes a pattern of excessive and obsessive exercise and is associated with hypoleptinemia and low testosterone that may have adverse skeletal effects. We used a validated questionnaire to identify males with high and low risk of exercise addiction. In a cross-sectional design, males (aged 21-49 years) with high ( = 20, exercise addictive) and low risk ( = 20, exercise controls) of exercise addiction had examinations of bone mass, bone microarchitecture, and estimated bone strength performed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry of the hip and spine and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography of the distal radius and tibia.

Background: Bariatric surgery has adverse effects on the muscular-skeletal system with loss of bone mass and muscle mass and an increase in the risk of fracture. Zoledronic acid is widely used in osteoporosis and prevents bone loss and fracture. Bisphosphonates may also have positive effects on skeletal muscle.
