Objectives: Although surgery is considered the standard of care for early-stage lung cancer, there has been increased use of stereotactic radiotherapy for operable patients in recent years. Given that this modality may be perceived as a more practical treatment, we hypothesized that it might be more often delivered to patients who experience barriers to care.

Methods: The National Cancer Database (2018-2020) was queried for patients with clinical stage IA non-small cell lung cancer treated with surgery or stereotactic radiotherapy (48-60 Gy, 3-5 fractions), excluding patients with contraindications to surgery.

Background: Patient-generated health data (PGHD), which includes patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and wearable device data, may have prognostic value for cancer patients. We tested that hypothesis using data from several prospective trials where patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LA-NSCLC) were treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy.

Methods: Cox proportional hazards models were utilized to identify the baseline patient-reported symptom that best predicted progression-free survival (PFS) duration in a trial that involved PRO-CTCAE collection (Cohort 1).

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the US and globally. The mortality from lung cancer has been declining, due to a reduction in incidence and advances in treatment. Although recent success in developing targeted and immunotherapies for lung cancer has benefitted patients, it has also expanded the complexity of potential treatment options for health care providers.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at how certain heart problems after surgery might lead to strokes in patients who didn't have heart issues before.
  • Out of over 251,000 patients who had non-heart surgeries, a small number developed a heart problem called postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF), which made their stroke risk higher.
  • The research found that giving these patients blood-thinning medicine after surgery could help prevent strokes linked to POAF.

Introduction: Robotic surgery has become an increasingly utilized approach for resectable lung cancer. However, availability may be limited for certain patient populations, underscoring inequity in access to innovative surgical techniques. We hypothesize that there is an association between social determinants of health and robotic surgery utilization for resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Background: Recently, there has been an increase in the representation of women within the cardiothoracic surgery workforce, with discussions about gender equity garnering interest. We sought to identify whether this increase is accompanied by commensurate selection for representation at national meetings.

Methods: Online archives of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Annual Meetings were reviewed from 2015 to 2024.

Immune checkpoint inhibition, with or without chemotherapy, is an established standard of care for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). For locally advanced NSCLC treated with chemoradiotherapy, consolidation immunotherapy has dramatically improved outcomes. Recently, immunotherapy has also been established as a valuable component of treatment for resectable NSCLC with pembrolizumab, atezolizumab, and nivolumab all approved for use in this setting.

Background: Local therapy for the primary tumor is postulated to remove resistant cancer cells as well as immunosuppressive cells from the tumor microenvironment, potentially improving response to systemic therapy (ST). We sought to determine whether resection of the primary tumor was associated with overall survival (OS) in a multicentric cohort of patients with single-site synchronous oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer.

Study Design: Using the National Cancer Database (2018 to 2020), we evaluated patients with clinical stage IVA disease who received ST and stratified the cohort based on receipt of surgery for the primary tumor (S).

Introduction: Osimertinib is recommended by major guidelines for use in the adjuvant setting in patients with EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC following the significant improvement in disease-free survival observed in the Phase III ADAURA trials. Due to limited real-world data in the adjuvant setting, little guidance exists on how to approach potential recurrences either during or after the completion of the treatment. This study aimed to reach a broad consensus on key treatment decision criteria in the events of recurrence.

The American College of Radiology created the Lung CT Screening Reporting and Data System (Lung-RADS) in 2014 to standardize the reporting and management of screen-detected pulmonary nodules. Lung-RADS was updated to version 1.1 in 2019 and revised size thresholds for nonsolid nodules, added classification criteria for perifissural nodules, and allowed for short-interval follow-up of rapidly enlarging nodules that may be infectious in etiology.

Article Synopsis
  • A study (CALGB140503) found that sublobar resection (SLR) has similar disease-free survival rates as lobectomy (L) for lung cancer patients, but concerns exist about the adequacy of lymph node removal during SLR in real-world settings.
  • An analysis of data from 3196 patients showed that a significant number undergoing SLR had no lymph nodes sampled (21.7% vs. 2.1% for L), and those who had SLR examined fewer total lymph nodes (4 vs. 11).
  • The findings suggest that while overall survival is similar between the two procedures, SLR often results in inadequate lymphadenectomy, which can lead to under-staging of the disease

While P2X7 receptor expression on tumour cells has been characterized as a promotor of cancer growth and metastasis, its expression by the host immune system is central for orchestration of both innate and adaptive immune responses against cancer. The role of P2X7R in anti-tumour immunity is complex and preclinical studies have described opposing roles of the P2X7R in regulating immune responses against tumours. Therefore, few P2X7R modulators have reached clinical testing in cancer patients.

Objectives: Although adjuvant systemic therapy (AT) has demonstrated improved survival in patients with resected non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), it remains underutilized. Recent trials demonstrating improved outcomes with adjuvant immunotherapy and targeted treatment imply that low uptake of systemic therapy in at-risk populations may widen existing outcome gaps. We, therefore, sought to determine factors associated with the underutilization of AT.
