Using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (n = 3928), we examined how police contact relates to sleep problems, anxiety, and depressive symptoms during middle adolescence (M age = 14.09; SD = 0.68).

Quantum Dot Erythropoietin Bioconjugates Enhance EPO-Receptor Clustering on Transfected Human Embryonic Kidney Cells.

Erythropoietin (EPO)-induced cellular signaling through the EPO receptor (EPOR) is a fundamental pathway for the modulation of cellular behavior and activity. In our previous work, we showed in primary human astrocytes that the multivalent display of EPO on the surface of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) mediates augmented JAK/STAT signaling, a concomitant 1.8-fold increase in the expression of aquaporin-4 (AQPN-4) channel proteins, and a 2-fold increase in the AQPN-4-mediated water transport activity.

Optimizing Prescribing for Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease Through the Development and Validation of Algorithms for Community Pharmacists.

Background: Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease and contributes to 38% of kidney failure requiring dialysis. A gap in detection and management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) exists in primary care. Community pharmacists are positioned to support those not able to access kidney care through traditional pathways.

Purpose: Corneal dysmorphologies (CDs) are typically classified as either regressive degenerative corneal dystrophies (CDtrs) or defective growth and differentiation-driven corneal dysplasias (CDyps). Both eye disorders have multifactorial etiologies. While previous work has elucidated many aspects of CDs, such as presenting symptoms, epidemiology, and pathophysiology, the genetic mechanisms remain incompletely understood.

Pneumonia and Anemia in Rural Midwestern Missouri: A Retrospective Analysis.

Introduction: Pneumonia and anemia are prevalent medical conditions with significant implications on patient health, resulting in numerous hospitalizations and deaths. Various studies have been done on the mortality rates of pneumonia and anemia individually. However, fewer describe the mortality of patients diagnosed with pneumonia superimposed on anemia.

Installation of an Indole on the BRCA1 Disordered Domain Using Triazine Chemistry.

The functionalization of protein sidechains with highly water-soluble chlorotriazines (or derivatives thereof) using nucleophilic aromatic substitution reactions has been commonly employed to install various functional groups, including poly(ethylene glycol) tags or fluorogenic labels. Here, a poorly soluble dichlorotriazine with an appended indole is shown to react with a construct containing the disordered domain of BRCA1. Subsequently, this construct can undergo proteolytic cleavage to remove the SUMO-tag: the -terminal poly(His) tag is still effective for purification.

Primary healthcare provider-perceived barriers to implementing an evidence-based pathway for undifferentiated lower gastrointestinal tract symptoms: A qualitative inquiry.

Background: Primary healthcare providers play a critical role in diagnosing and managing digestive disorders. Standardized clinical care guidelines have been developed, but with limited and inconsistent implementation. An evidence-based gastroenterology clinical care pathway (GUTLINK) has been proposed in one region of Canada; however, little is known in the medical literature about potential barriers to pathway implementation within primary care.

Long-term studies should provide structure for inclusive education and professional development.

Long-term studies are critical for ecological understanding, but they are underutilized as inclusive opportunities for training ecologists. We use our perspective from the Año Nuevo elephant seal programme along with surveys from community members to propose that long-term studies could be better leveraged to promote inclusive education and professional development in ecology. Drawing on our experiences as mentors and mentees, we demonstrate how long-term studies can use their resources, including rich data, robust logistics and extensive professional networks, to improve recruitment and retention of diverse groups of trainees.

Biophysics and electrophysiology of pulsed field ablation in normal and infarcted porcine cardiac ventricular tissue.

Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) is a new ablation method being rapidly adopted for treatment of atrial fibrillation, which shows advantages in safety and efficiency over radiofrequency and cryo-ablation. In this study, we used an in vivo swine model (10 healthy and 5 with chronic myocardial infarct) for ventricular PFA, collecting intracardiac electrograms, electro-anatomical maps, native T1-weighted and late gadolinium enhancement MRI, gross pathology, and histology. We used 1000-1500 V pulses, with 1-16 pulse trains to vary PFA dose.

Profiling protease cleavage patterns in plasma for pancreatic cancer detection.

Proteases are promising biomarkers for cancer early detection. Their enzymatic activity against peptide substrates allows for their straightforward detection using low-cost tests. However, the complexity of the human proteome makes it challenging to develop sensitive and selective tests against a specific protease biomarker.

Super-Resolved Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging of Single Cy3 Molecules and Quantum Dots Using Time-Correlated Single Photon Counting with a Four-Pixel Fiber Optic Array Camera.

Time-resolved single molecule localization microscopy (TR-SMLM) with a 2 × 2 pixel fiber optic array camera was combined with time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) to obtain super-resolved fluorescence lifetime images of individual Cy3 dye molecules and individual colloidal CdSe/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). The characteristic blinking and bleaching behavior of the Cy3 and the blinking behavior of the QD emitters were used as distinguishing optical characteristics to isolate them and determine their centroid locations with spatial resolution below the optical diffraction limit. TCSPC was used to characterize the fluorescence lifetime and intensity corresponding to each emitter location.

Proline variants in the BRCA1 coiled-coil domain disrupt folding and binding to PALB2.

Inherited mutations in the genes coding for the tumor suppressor proteins BRCA1 and PALB2 can lead to increased risk of breast and ovarian cancer. Upon DNA damage, these two proteins form a complex to promote double-stranded break repair via homologous recombination. Missense mutations in either BRCA1 or PALB2 that disrupt this important interaction result in loss of effective DNA damage repair and are associated with breast tumorigenesis.

Choose Your Own Adventure to Enhance Hypertension, Heart Failure, and Insulin Management Skills.

Objective: Choose Your Own Adventure (CYOA) educational activities can be utilized in the classroom to simulate patient cases. The objective of this study was to evaluate changes in pharmacy student knowledge and confidence in hypertension, heart failure, and insulin management skills after completion of CYOA activities.

Methods: Three CYOA activities were developed for 3 separate lectures in 2 pharmacy electives on topics of hypertension, heart failure, and insulin management.

Embedding clinical trial elements into clinical practice: Experiences from trial designers and implementers.

Introduction: Researchers and policymakers recognize that leveraging data routinely collected in clinical practice can support improved research and patient care. Embedding elements of clinical trials, such as patient identification and trial data acquisition, into clinical practice can enable research access and increase efficiencies by reducing duplication of trial and care activities. Yet, cultural, administrative, and data barriers exist.

"It Felt Sexually Liberating": An Examination of How Black Women's Awareness of Kink and BDSM Informs Their Sex Lives.

Kink and BDSM can have healing and liberatory potential for practitioners, whether kink-identified or not, particularly Black women and those who are members of alternative sexual communities. This study presents data from  = 22 kink/BDSM-identified, experienced, and non-kinky/BDSM Black ciswomen on their awareness of and engagement in kink and BDSM (bondage and discipline, sadism and masochism, dominance, and submission). Qualitative data were from Phase Two of The Big Sex Study, a #HotGirlScience participatory action project.

A coordinated kinase and phosphatase network regulates Stu2 recruitment to yeast kinetochores.

Cells coordinate diverse events at anaphase onset, including separase activation, cohesin cleavage, chromosome separation, and spindle reorganization. Regulation of the XMAP215 family member and microtubule polymerase, Stu2, at the metaphase-anaphase transition determines a specific redistribution from kinetochores to spindle microtubules. We show that cells modulate Stu2 kinetochore-microtubule localization by Polo-like kinase1/Cdc5-mediated phosphorylation of T866, near the Stu2 C-terminus, thereby promoting dissociation from the kinetochore Ndc80 complex.

Importance: Few studies have explored the association between sexual and gender minority (SGM) status and occupational well-being among health care workers.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of burnout, professional fulfillment, intent to leave, anxiety, and depression by self-reported SGM status.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This cross-sectional survey study collected data from October 2019 to July 2021, from 8 academic medical institutions participating in the Healthcare Professional Well-Being Academic Consortium.

Membrane-Targeted Quantum Dot-Based BACE1 Activity Sensors for and Assays.

The need for the development of specific and robust methodologies to elucidate the intricate pathological mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and discover effective treatments for prevention and remediation is evident. Alzheimer's disease, in particular, has become more prevalent as the global population has aged. β-Secretase, the β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme (BACE1), is the protease that produces the β-amyloid peptide, which is considered one of the driving factors of Alzheimer's disease and an important target for treatment development.

Delayed Corneal Healing After the Use of Topical Ophthalmic Anesthetics.

Topical anesthetics for control of pain from corneal abrasions can cause drug-related toxicity that delays corneal healing. This report documents three cases where topical anesthetic drops were prescribed in the emergency department for pain control, after which patients developed persistent ocular pain, epithelial toxicity with impaired healing, and significant loss of vision. On consultation with the ophthalmology service, each patient was instructed to discontinue the topical anesthetic drops but to continue topical antibiotics.

Relationship of hub and treatment characteristics with client outcomes in the initial Washington State hub and spoke cohort.

Introduction: Washington State's Hub and Spoke (HS) approach aims to improve availability of opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment. Washington initially funded six hubs with expertise in medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) that built care networks with referral and treatment partners (spokes). We assessed outcomes for the initial HS cohort, considering the role of HS and treatment characteristics.

In-utero transfer, survival-focused care and survival to 28-days at 22-24 weeks' gestation pre- and post- implementation of an extreme prematurity management guideline in Victoria, Australia.

Background: Care for infants born at 22-24 weeks' gestation varies globally, with an increasing willingness to provide survival-focused ('active') care for infants born at 22 weeks' gestation in recent years. This study aims to report changes in care for infants born at 22-24 weeks before and after the introduction of a statewide guideline for extreme prematurity (EP).

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all live births at 22-24 weeks in tertiary perinatal centres from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2022 in Victoria, Australia.
