This article reviews the effects of the premature loss of ovarian function on lipids and lipoproteins, glucose and insulin metabolism, body composition, hemostasis and blood pressure, together with effects on the development of metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus.

It has been suggested that Iberian arrival in the Americas in 1492 and subsequent dramatic depopulation led to forest regrowth that had global impacts on atmospheric CO concentrations and surface temperatures. Despite tropical forests representing the most important terrestrial carbon stock globally, systematic examination of historical afforestation in these habitats in the Neotropics is lacking. Additionally, there has been no assessment of similar depopulation-afforestation dynamics in other parts of the global tropics that were incorporated into the Spanish Empire.

Background: Pharmacy stands increasingly on the frontline of patient care, yet current studies of clinical decision-making by pharmacists only capture deliberative processes that can be stated explicitly. Decision-making incorporates both deliberative and intuitive processes. Clinical Judgement Analysis (CJA) is a method novel to pharmacy that uncovers intuitive decision-making and may provide a more comprehensive understanding of the decision-making processes of pharmacists.

Aims: Controversy exists as to what should be considered a safe resection margin to minimize local recurrence in high-grade pelvic chondrosarcomas (CS). The aim of this study is to quantify what is a safe margin of resection for high-grade CS of the pelvis.

Methods: We retrospectively identified 105 non-metastatic patients with high-grade pelvic CS of bone who underwent surgery (limb salvage/amputations) between 2000 and 2018.

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis has been implicated in a number of disorders where reward processing is disrupted but whether new neurons regulate specific aspects of reward-related decision making remains unclear. Given the role of the hippocampus in future-oriented cognition, here we tested whether adult neurogenesis regulates preference for future, advantageous rewards in a delay discounting paradigm for rats. Indeed, blocking neurogenesis caused a profound aversion for delayed rewards, and biased choice behavior toward immediately available, but smaller, rewards.

Improving the quality and quantity of clinical and translational research statewide: An application of group concept mapping.

Introduction: Advance Clinical and Translational Research (Advance-CTR) serves as a central hub to support and educate clinical and translational researchers in Rhode Island. Understanding barriers to clinical research in the state is the key to setting project aims and priorities.

Methods: We implemented a Group Concept Mapping exercise to characterize the views of researchers and administrators regarding how to increase the quality and quantity of clinical and translational research in their settings.

Purpose: This study identified facilitators and barriers pertaining to the use of multiple mobile health (mHealth) devices (Fitbit Alta® fitness tracker, iHealth® glucometer, BodyTrace® scale) that support self-management behaviors in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

Design: This qualitative descriptive study presents study participants' perceptions of using multiple mobile devices to support T2DM self-management. Additionally, this study assessed whether participants found visualizations, generated from each participant's health data as obtained from the three separate devices, useful and easy to interpret.

The human dimension of biodiversity changes on islands.

Islands are among the last regions on Earth settled and transformed by human activities, and they provide replicated model systems for analysis of how people affect ecological functions. By analyzing 27 representative fossil pollen sequences encompassing the past 5000 years from islands globally, we quantified the rates of vegetation compositional change before and after human arrival. After human arrival, rates of turnover accelerate by a median factor of 11, with faster rates on islands colonized in the past 1500 years than for those colonized earlier.

The Structural Assessment of Knowledge (SAK) is an implicit form of evaluation, which examines the organization of knowledge structures or networks. The current study investigates variability in expert knowledge structures of neuroscience concepts, and whether different expert referents affect undergraduate students' learning of neuronal physiology and structure and function relationships across different course levels. Experts and students made pairwise ratings of terms on their relatedness.
