Teaching Skin Cancer Detection to Medical Students Using a Dermoscopic Algorithm.

Introduction: Early detection of melanoma skin cancer improves survival rates. Training family physicians in dermoscopy with the triage amalgamated dermoscopic algorithm (TADA) has high sensitivity and specificity for identifying malignant skin neoplasms. In this study we evaluated the effectiveness of TADA training among medical students, compared with practicing clinicians.

A narrative review of imaging in calcinosis associated with systemic sclerosis.

Calcinosis is dystrophic calcification of the soft tissue which can lead to painful and debilitating disease. It is commonly seen in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Imaging can assist in diagnosis, quantification of disease, and better pathophysiologic understanding of calcinosis.

Global political responsibility for the conservation of albatrosses and large petrels.

Migratory marine species cross political borders and enter the high seas, where the lack of an effective global management framework for biodiversity leaves them vulnerable to threats. Here, we combine 10,108 tracks from 5775 individual birds at 87 sites with data on breeding population sizes to estimate the relative year-round importance of national jurisdictions and high seas areas for 39 species of albatrosses and large petrels. Populations from every country made extensive use of the high seas, indicating the stake each country has in the management of biodiversity in international waters.

The Use of Tranexamic Acid to Reduce the Need for Nasal Packing in Epistaxis (NoPAC): Randomized Controlled Trial.

Study Objective: Epistaxis is a common emergency department (ED) presentation and, if simple first aid measures fail, can lead to a need for anterior nasal packing. Tranexamic acid is an agent that contributes to blood clot stability. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of topical intranasal tranexamic acid in adult patients presenting to the ED with persistent epistaxis, and whether it reduces the need for anterior nasal packing.

Dermoscopic Lotus of Learning: Implementation and Dissemination of a Multimodal Dermoscopy Curriculum for Primary Care.

Dermoscopy is a cost-effective tool for detection of skin cancers yet there is limited training available for primary care. The goal of this project was to develop, implement, and disseminate a multimodal curriculum for primary care across a health system based on a previously validated algorithm (Triage Amalgamated Dermoscopic Algorithm; TADA). This cross-sectional study analyzes the dermoscopy workshop intervention of a dermoscopy multimodal curriculum.

Endometrioma Causing Near-Complete Obstruction of the Sigmoid Colon.

Endometriosis is characterized by extra-uterine endometrial gland and stroma implantation. Intestinal endometriosis is believed to affect about one-third of patients with endometriosis; 72-95% of patients experience recto-sigmoid involvement. Occasionally, endometriotic lesions precipitate mass effect or infiltrate the bowel wall, mimicking a neoplasm.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health problem because of its high prevalence, associated complications and high treatment costs. Several aspects of CKD differ significantly in the Eastern European nephrology community compared with Western Europe because of different geographic, socio-economic, infrastructure, cultural and educational features. The two most frequent aetiologies of CKD, DM and hypertension, and many other predisposing factors, are more frequent in the Eastern region, resulting in more prevalent CKD Stages 3-5.

A comparison of the value of two machine learning predictive models to support bovine tuberculosis disease control in England.

Nearly a decade into Defra's current eradication strategy, bovine tuberculosis (bTB) remains a serious animal health problem in England, with c.30,000 cattle slaughtered annually in the fight against this insidious disease. There is an urgent need to improve our understanding of bTB risk in order to enhance the current disease control policy.

Balance Right in Multiple Sclerosis (BRiMS): a feasibility randomised controlled trial of a falls prevention programme.

Background: Balance, mobility impairments and falls are problematic for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The "Balance Right in MS (BRiMS)" intervention, a 13-week home and group-based exercise and education programme, aims to improve balance and minimise falls. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of undertaking a multi-centre randomised controlled trial and to collect the necessary data to design a definitive trial.

Measurable reflection in simulation: A pilot study.

Purpose: Debriefing is considered a cornerstone in the success of simulated learning practices. For debriefing to be productive and meaningful, reflection of the learners is essential. Measuring reflection during debriefing has proven to be difficult.

Renal Disease in Primary Sjögren's Syndrome.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterised by lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glands, predominantly the salivary and lacrimal glands, leading to sicca symptoms. Patients may have extraglandular disease involving multiple organs, including the kidneys. 5% of patients with pSS can have renal involvement.

Incidence and risk factors for feline lymphoma in UK primary-care practice.

Objectives: The study aimed to estimate the incidence and prevalence of feline lymphoma in cats attending primary-care practices across the UK and to identify patient-based and environmental (radon and pesticide exposure) risk factors.

Materials And Methods: Case records from the VetCompass programme from primary-care veterinary practices in the UK were searched for a diagnosis of lymphoma in cats in 2016. Cases were required to have had an external laboratory confirmed diagnosis based on cytology and/or histopathology.

Histone variants in archaea and the evolution of combinatorial chromatin complexity.

Nucleosomes in eukaryotes act as platforms for the dynamic integration of epigenetic information. Posttranslational modifications are reversibly added or removed and core histones exchanged for paralogous variants, in concert with changing demands on transcription and genome accessibility. Histones are also common in archaea.

Factors influencing the persistence of enteropathogenic bacteria in wetland habitats and implications for water quality.

Aims: To better understand the persistence dynamics of enteropathogenic bacteria in freshwater wetland habitats, we constructed lab-scale mesocosms planted with two different wetland plant species using a subsurface flow wetland design. Mesocosms were treated with either a high-quality or a poor-quality water source to examine the effects of water quality exposure and plant species on Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Enterococcus spp.

Modelling habitat suitability in Jordan for the cutaneous leishmaniasis vector (Phlebotomus papatasi) using multicriteria decision analysis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a zoonotic vector-borne neglected tropical disease transmitted by female Phlebotomine sand flies. It is distributed globally but a large proportion of cases (70-75%) are found in just ten countries. CL is endemic in Jordan yet there is a lack of robust entomological data and true reporting status is unknown.

Tooth Resorption Following an Alveolar Bone Graft in a Patient With Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate.

We report a case of secondary alveolar bone grafting (ABG) without removal of a supernumerary tooth in a patient with unilateral cleft lip and palate. A conical supernumerary tooth located distal to the upper left central incisor within the cleft site was left in situ at the time of ABG. The tooth within the ABG site commenced resorption from both the apical and incisal edges until only minor tooth remnants remained at 22 months.

Foraging in a dynamic environment: Response of four sympatric sub-Antarctic albatross species to interannual environmental variability.

Seasonal and annual climate variations are linked to fluctuations in the abundance and distribution of resources, posing a significant challenge to animals that need to adjust their foraging behavior accordingly. Particularly during adverse conditions, and while energetically constrained when breeding, animals ideally need to be flexible in their foraging behavior. Such behavioral plasticity may separate "winners" from "losers" in light of rapid environmental changes due to climate change.

Need for recovery amongst emergency physicians in the UK and Ireland: a cross-sectional survey.

Objectives: To determine the need for recovery (NFR) among emergency physicians and to identify demographic and occupational characteristics associated with higher NFR scores.

Design: Cross-sectional electronic survey.

Setting: Emergency departments (EDs) (n=112) in the UK and Ireland.
