Urothelial cancer, which is predominantly seen in men, is common throughout the world. Most disease presents as non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), with cancer recurring or progressing to muscle invasive disease in more than 50% of patients after initial therapy. NMIBC is an immune responsive disease, as indicated by the use of intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin as treatment for more than 3 decades.

Article Synopsis
  • AEZS-108 is a targeted treatment combining doxorubicin with an LHRH analogue, aimed at men with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer who had progressed after standard chemotherapy.
  • In a phase II trial, 25 patients received AEZS-108, with 52% showing clinical benefits at 12 weeks and manageable side effects, while some patients experienced stable disease or minimal improvement in PSA levels.
  • The trial found that overall, pain improved in 59% of patients, with a median progression-free survival of 3.8 months, highlighting the potential efficacy of AEZS-108 in this patient population.

Clear cell (cc) renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of cancer found in the kidney accounting for ~90% of all kidney cancers. In 2012, there were ~337,000 new cases of RCC diagnosed worldwide with an estimated 143,000 deaths, with the highest incidence and mortality in Western countries. Despite improvements in cancer control achieved with VEGF- and mTOR-targeted therapy for RCC, progression remains virtually universal and additional therapies are needed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines disparities in colorectal cancer outcomes among Hispanic patients in the U.S., linking poorer results to late diagnosis and socioeconomic factors, particularly in metastatic cases.
  • Researchers analyzed data from two hospitals in Los Angeles (a public and a private one), focusing on demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment effects on survival rates for metastatic CRC between 2002 and 2012.
  • Findings revealed that Hispanic patients had shorter time to progression and overall survival compared to non-Hispanic whites, but those treated at the public hospital had better outcomes, highlighting the importance of healthcare setting.

Article Synopsis
  • MonoMAC syndrome, first identified in 2011, is a rare condition involving low monocytosis that makes individuals more vulnerable to various infections, particularly from nontuberculous mycobacteria.
  • Caused by mutations in the GATA2 gene, the syndrome can also lead to a range of systemic infections, including fungal and viral diseases.
  • Recent advancements in treatment, such as haploidentical allogeneic stem cell transplants, show promise for improving survival rates, and rheumatologists might increasingly encounter patients with related rheumatologic symptoms like erythema nodosum and arthralgias.

Regular green tea intake has been associated with an inverse risk of breast cancer. There are compelling experimental evidence that green tea, particularly, epigallocatechin gallate, the most potent green tea catechin, possesses a range of anti-cancer properties. We conducted a pre-surgical study of green tea capsules vs.

The study tested the hypothesis that transplantation of embryonic stem (ES) cells into rat cortex after a severe focal ischemia would promote structural repair and functional recovery. Overexpression of the human anti-apoptotic gene bcl-2 in ES cells was tested for increasing survival and differentiation of transplanted cells and promoting functional benefits. Mouse ES cells, pretreated with retinoic acid to induce differentiation down neural lineages, were transplanted into the post-infarct brain cavity of adult rats 7 days after 2-h occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCA).
