Article Synopsis
  • - The study highlights the need for clarity in distinguishing between gender and sex in arthroplasty research, especially with increasing focus on transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex identities.
  • - A review of 100 primary clinical research articles from top orthopaedic journals showed that most utilized gender or sex terminology, but often interchangeably and without clear definitions, leading to a lack of nuanced understanding.
  • - The findings indicate a prevalent binary perspective on gender and sex in these articles, with only a small percentage using these terms for detailed statistical analysis, suggesting a need for more precise and inclusive approaches in future research.

Background: Phalloplasty is among the most complex and technically demanding reconstructive procedures. As a larger pool of surgeons perform this difficult procedure, more patients will present with major complications. There are few published data on the comprehensive evaluation and management of these patients, particularly those needing correction of multiple ongoing complications, which may require consideration of starting over with a new microsurgical procedure versus salvage of the existing flap.

Human amniotic membrane (hAM) and collagen nerve wraps are biomaterials that have been investigated as therapies for improving outcomes of peripheral nerve regeneration; however, their efficacy has not been compared. The purpose of this study is to compare the efficacy of collagen and human amniotic membrane nerve wraps in a rodent sciatic nerve reverse autograft model. Lewis rats ( = 29) underwent sciatic nerve injury and repair in which a 10-mm gap was bridged with reverse autograft combined with either no nerve wrap (control), collagen nerve wrap or hAM nerve wrap.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted plastic surgery training, shifting education from hands-on experience in the operating room to virtual learning environments due to reduced elective surgeries and the need for social distancing.
  • A survey conducted among US plastic surgery residents and fellows highlighted concerns about their well-being, educational experiences, and career aspirations during the pandemic, with many reporting changes to their post-graduation plans.
  • Findings showed that a majority of trainees felt their operatory exposure was diminished, leading to an increased interest in pursuing additional fellowship training amidst uncertainties in job availability in private practice.

Purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has been an unprecedented public health crisis. As hospitals took measures to increase their capacity to manage COVID-19 patients, plastic surgeons have also had to modify their routine to continue serving their vital role within the hospital environment. In an effort to reduce exposure to COVID-19 and conserve hospital resources, many plastic surgery programs drastically modified call schedules, restructured inpatient teams, triaged operative cases, and expanded telemedicine encounters.

Background:  Collagen and human amniotic membrane (hAM) are Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved biomaterials that can be used as nerve wraps or conduits for repair of peripheral nerve injuries. Both biomaterials have been shown to reduce scarring and fibrosis of injured peripheral nerves. However, comparative advantages and disadvantages have not been definitively shown in the literature.

Background: Penile skin inversion vaginoplasty is a gender-affirming surgical procedure for transwomen with limited surgical analgesic protocol. This study compares the postoperative pain and opioid use in patients managed for surgery with general anesthesia (GA) with patients who were given combined epidural and general anesthesia (E/GA) with continuing postoperative epidural analgesia.

Methods: All patients who underwent penile inversion vaginoplasty between May of 2016 and May of 2018 under the care of single surgeon were identified retrospectively, 18 patients of which met the inclusion criteria.

Introduction: With increasing health care expenses and limited resources, it is important to evaluate potential means of reducing cost while maintaining efficacy and safety. The purpose of our study was to compare the cost and outcomes of surgical excision of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in the operating room versus an outpatient procedure clinic.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing excision of biopsy-confirmed NMSC at the Miami Veterans Affairs Hospital between December 1, 2015, and December 1, 2016, was completed.

Superficial subcutaneous lipomas are common benign tumors of the subcutaneous adipose tissue. Removal of superficial subcutaneous lipomas is achieved with simple surgical excision for the purposes of improved cosmesis, removing painful lipomas, or for the removal of a lipoma affecting function through mass effect. As research in localized fat reduction has improved, therapies successful in this domain have been applied to the management of lipomas as a surgical alternative.

The objective of this study was to examine the current system of medical education along with the advances that are being made to support the demands of a changing health care system. American medical education must reform to anticipate the future needs of a changing health care system. Since the dramatic transformations to medical education that followed the publication of the Flexner report in 1910, medical education in the United States has largely remained unaltered.
