Involuntary hyperventilation is a critical factor in acclimatization to a high altitude. Unacclimatized subjects do poorly when acutely exposed to high altitude. This may not be due to hypocapnia itself, but rather an associated symptom which inhibits hypoxic respiratory stimulation.
