The current investigation examined the nature of the cognitive processes that underlie decision-making behavior. The focus of this project centered on the effects of utilizing heuristics that pertain to the availability of information stored in memory. Anchoring effects demonstrate that people will use any available information sampled from memory as a reference for making judgments of frequency.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOptical frequency combs have developed into powerful tools for distance metrology. In this paper we demonstrate absolute long distance measurement using a single femtosecond frequency comb laser as a multi-wavelength source. By applying a high-resolution spectrometer based on a virtually imaged phased array, the frequency comb modes are resolved spectrally to the level of an individual mode.

The excitation is detected with nearly 100% efficiency using a shelving scheme in combination with single-ion imaging. The method demonstrated here has the potential to reach hertz-level accuracy, if a hertz-level linewidth FC is used in combination with confinement in the Lamb-Dicke regime.
