This review systematically explores the application of transformer-based models in EEG signal processing and brain-computer interface (BCI) development, with a distinct focus on ensuring methodological rigour and adhering to empirical validations within the existing literature. By examining various transformer architectures, such as the Temporal Spatial Transformer Network (TSTN) and EEG Conformer, this review delineates their capabilities in mitigating challenges intrinsic to EEG data, such as noise and artifacts, and their subsequent implications on decoding and classification accuracies across disparate mental tasks. The analytical scope extends to a meticulous examination of attention mechanisms within transformer models, delineating their role in illuminating critical temporal and spatial EEG features and facilitating interpretability in model decision-making processes.

Background: Hypertension is associated with severe complications, and its detection is important to provide early information about a hypertension event, which is essential to prevent further complications.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate a strategy for hypertension detection without a cuff using parameters of bioelectric signals, i.e.

Many biological tissues inside the human body exhibit highly anisotropic diffusion properties; for example, tissues of the nervous system and white matter in the brain. Here, we present an improved stochastic molecular communication framework to model interaction between bionanomachines in three-dimensional (3D) anisotropic brain micro-environment. The results obtained using stochastic particle-based simulation model are validated with analytical expressions.

Molecular communication is an emerging technology for communication between bio-nanomachines in an aqueous environment. In this paper, we examine the effect of a reactive obstacle, which is placed in the diffusive molecular communication channel, on the expected number of the received molecules at the receiver. We develop a particle-based simulator that can predict the number of the received molecules for both passive and absorptive receivers by considering the impact of the reactive obstacle within the communication channel.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective and widely used treatment for major depressive disorder, in which a brief electric current is passed through the brain to trigger a brief seizure. This study aims to identify seizure quality rating by utilizing a set of seizure parameters. We used 750 ECT EEG recordings in this experiment.

Hypoglycemia is the most acute and common complication of Type 1 diabetes and is a limiting factor in a glycemic management of diabetes. In this paper, two main contributions are presented; firstly, ventricular repolarization variabilities are introduced for hypoglycemia detection, and secondly, a swarm-based support vector machine (SVM) algorithm with the inputs of the repolarization variabilities is developed to detect hypoglycemia. By using the algorithm and including several repolarization variabilities as inputs, the best hypoglycemia detection performance is found with sensitivity and specificity of 82.

For patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), hypoglycemia is a very common but dangerous complication which can lead to unconsciousness, coma and even death. The variety of hypoglycemia symptoms is originated from the inadequate supply of glucose to the brain. In this study, we explore the connection between hypoglycemic episodes and the electrical activity of neurons within the brain or electroencephalogram (EEG) signals.

Cardiac arrhythmia relating to hypoglycemia is suggested as a cause of death in diabetic patients. This article introduces electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters for artificially induced hypoglycemia detection. In addition, a hybrid technique of swarm-based support vector machine (SVM) is introduced for hypoglycemia detection using the ECG parameters as inputs.

Hypoglycemia or low blood glucose is dangerous and can result in unconsciousness, seizures, and even death. It is a common and serious side effect of insulin therapy in patients with diabetes. Hypoglycemic monitor is a noninvasive monitor that measures some physiological parameters continuously to provide detection of hypoglycemic episodes in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients (T1DM).
