Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is recognized as one of the major causes of infection-related cancer worldwide, as well as the causal factor in other diseases. Strong evidence for a causal etiology with HPV has been stated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer for cancers of the cervix uteri, penis, vulva, vagina, anus and oropharynx (including base of the tongue and tonsils). Of the estimated 12.

Objective: To illustrate the varying presentations of the female athlete triad and to inform the practitioner of the potential sequelae of this common condition.

Clinical Features: Four patients presented with a variety of signs and symptoms of the female athlete triad including low caloric intake, osteoporosis, amenorrhea and/or endothelial dysfunction.

Intervention And Outcome: A conservative treatment approach was utilized in each case including education on the female athlete triad, education on increased caloric intake and a referral to the family physician.

Objective: The objective of this study was to measure the interexaminer reliability of scoring pain distribution using paper and electronic body pain diagrams in patients with acute whiplash-associated disorder and to assess the intermethod reliability of measuring pain distribution and location using paper and electronic diagrams.

Methods: We conducted an interexaminer reliability study on 80 participants recruited from a randomized controlled trial on the conservative management of acute grade I/II whiplash-associated disorder. Participants were assessed for inclusion/exclusion criteria by an experienced clinician.

Whole-genome sequencing, particularly in fungi, has progressed at a tremendous rate. More difficult, however, is experimental testing of the inferences about gene function that can be drawn from comparative sequence analysis alone. We present a genome-wide functional characterization of a sequenced but experimentally understudied budding yeast, Saccharomyces bayanus var.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to perform a systematic review of test-retest, intraexaminer, and interexaminer reliability of measuring pain location and distribution using the body pain diagram.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review of the literature using a search conducted in Medline, CINAHL, and Nursing and Allied Health from inception to March 1, 2012. Articles were screened and selected by pairs of reviewers using predetermined inclusion criteria.

Purpose: Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) is a motion-sparing procedure for degenerative disorders of the proximal carpal row. Reported results at a minimum 10-year follow-up consistently show maintenance of strength, motion, and satisfaction with an average conversion rate to radiocarpal arthrodesis of 12%. We hypothesized that PRC would continue to provide a high level of satisfaction and function at a minimum of 20 years.

Objective: Primary spinal cord tumours are rare causes of low back pain but can be a significant cause of morbidity if undiagnosed and untreated. The following is a case of a young male patient presenting with low back pain and radicular symptoms caused by myxopapillary ependymoma.

Clinical Features: A nineteen year old male presented to an orthopaedic surgeon with a long history of back pain.

Dentin phosphoprotein (DPP) is the most abundant noncollagenous protein in the dentin, where it plays a major role in the mineralization of dentin. However, we and others have shown that in addition to being present in the dentin, DPP is also present in nonmineralizing tissues like the kidney, lung, and salivary glands, where it conceivably has other functions such as in calcium transport. Because annexins have been implicated as calcium transporters, we examined the relationships between DPP and annexins.

Background: Urolithiasis refers to renal or ureteral calculi referred to in lay terminology as a kidney stone. Utolithiasis is a potential emergency often resulting in acute abdominal, low back, flank or groin pain. Chiropractors may encounter patients when they are in acute pain or after they have recovered from the acute phase and should be knowledgeable about the signs, symptoms, potential complications and appropriate recommendations for management.

Osteoporosis often results in fractures, deformity and disability. A rare but potentially challenging complication of osteoporosis is a sternal insufficiency fracture. This case report details a steroid-induced osteoporotic male who suffered a sternal insufficiency fracture after minimal trauma.

Background: In the United States, hip fracture rates have declined by 30% coincident with bisphosphonate use. However, bisphosphonates are associated with sporadic cases of atypical femoral fracture. Atypical femoral fractures are usually atraumatic, may be bilateral, are occasionally preceded by prodromal thigh pain, and may have delayed fracture-healing.

Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of pyrolytic carbon arthroplasty for the management of primary osteoarthritis of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Methods: A retrospective review of 11 pyrolytic carbon arthroplasties for osteoarthritis of the metacarpophalangeal joint, performed by a single surgeon, was conducted. All patients returned for clinical assessment at a minimum of 2 years after surgery.

Purpose: To investigate the relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) genotype and outcome after radiation therapy and intrinsic radiosensitivity.

Methods And Materials: HPV genotyping was performed on cervix biopsies by polymerase chain reaction using SPF-10 broad-spectrum primers, followed by deoxyribonucleic acid enzyme immunoassay and genotyping by reverse hybridization line probe assay (LiPA25) (version 1) (n=202). PapilloCheck and quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction were used to genotype cervix cancer cell lines (n=16).

Scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) and scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) are the two most common patterns of posttraumatic wrist arthritis. This review discusses the etiology and clinical evaluation, as well as up-to-date treatment options, for both of these conditions. Classic as well as newer innovative techniques are discussed with clinical outcomes in order to provide an evidence-based review of the world's literature on SLAC/SNAC wrist.

Kras-induced non-small-cell lung adenocarcinoma is the major subtype of lung cancers and is associated with poor prognosis. Using a lung cancer mouse model that expresses a cre-mediated KrasG12D mutant, we identified a critical role for the cell surface molecule CD44 in mediating cell proliferation downstream of oncogenic Kras signaling. The deletion of CD44 attenuates lung adenocarcinoma formation and prolongs the survival of these mice.
