The covalent modification of the metallic phase of MoS with a Hamilton-type ligand is presented, transforming MoS to a recognition platform which is able to embrace barbiturate moieties via hydrogen bonding. The successful hydrogen bonding formation is easily monitored by simple electrochemical assessments, if a ferrocene-labeled barbiturate analogue is utilized as a proof of concept. Full spectroscopic, thermal, and electron microscopy imaging characterization is provided for the newly formed recognition system, along with valuable insights concerning the electrochemical sensing.

Anilines and substituted anilines are used on the multi-ton scale for producing polymers, pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other important compounds. Anilines are important feedstocks for pharmaceuticals, dyes, and other materials, but traditional approaches to their syntheses usually lack selectivity and environmental sustainability. Here, we describe the selective reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline under mild conditions, using water as the ultimate source of the required protons and electrons. We describe the electrochemical cell assembly, and detail steps for electrochemical reduction followed by organic extraction and analysis of the extracts using NMR.

The rangelands of Crete island (Greece) are typical Mediterranean habitats under high risk of degradation due to long-term grazing and harsh climatic conditions. We explored the effect of abiotic (climatic conditions, altitude) and biotic factors (long-term grazing by small ruminants) on the floristic composition and diversity of selected lowland (Pyrathi, Faistos) and highland (Vroulidia, Nida) rangelands. In each rangeland, the ground cover was measured, and the floristic composition was calculated in terms of five functional groups: grasses, legumes, forbs, phrygana, and shrubs.

We report a series of rotaxane-based anion-π catalysts in which the mechanical bond between a bipyridine macrocycle and an axle containing an NDI unit is intrinsic to the activity observed, including a [3]rotaxane that catalyses an otherwise disfavoured Michael addition in >60 fold selectivity over a competing decarboxylation pathway that dominates under Brønsted base conditions. The results are rationalized by detailed experimental investigations, electrochemical and computational analysis.

Molecular entities with robust spin-1/2 are natural two-level quantum systems for realizing qubits and are key ingredients of emerging quantum technologies such as quantum computing. Here we show that robust and abundant spin-1/2 species can be created in the solid state from spin-active azafullerene CN cages supramolecularly hosted in crystals of [10]cycloparaphenylene ([10]CPP) nanohoops. This is achieved a two-stage thermally-assisted homolysis of the parent diamagnetic [10]CPP⊃(CN)⊂[10]CPP supramolecular complex.

Encouraged by the recent regioselective synthesis of the inherently chiral equatorial bisadduct of C N, we focused on the isolation of the first trans-4 bisadduct in a simple two-step approach. We describe the basal plane functionalization of chemically exfoliated molybdenum disulfide (ce-MoS2) nanosheets with a benzo-15-crown-5 ether (B15C5), promoted by the chemistry of diazonium salts en route to the fabrication and electrochemical assessment of an ion-responsive electrode. The success of the chemical modification of ce-MoS2 nanosheets was investigated by infrared and Raman spectroscopy, and the amount of the incorporated crown ether was estimated by thermogravimetric analysis. Raman spatial mapping at on-resonance excitation allowed us to disclose the structural characteristics of the functionalized B15C5-MoS2 nanosheets and the impact of basal plane functionalization to the stabilization of the 1T phase of ce-MoS2.

Carbon dots (CDs) are a booming material and the most recent incomer in the big family of carbon nanostructures. Specifically, CDs are nanosized fluorescent core-shell nanoparticles with tunable absorption and emission spectra, with high solubility in aqueous media and common organic solvents. Herein, the origins and the development of these unique nanoscale structures are discussed, key synthetic routes are briefly described, and the utilization of CDs in light-induced charge-transfer schemes is mainly focused upon.
