Objective: The extent to which proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can offset direct medical costs by reducing symptoms related to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in order to improve work productivity is not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the economic impact of treating GERD with PPIs versus no treatment, from an employer's perspective.

Study Design: An economic model was developed to simulate symptom reduction and breakthrough symptoms as well as associated costs over 1 year among a population of 100,000 with a 20% GERD prevalence rate.

Background & Aims: Endoscopic biliary sphincterotomy has complication rates of 5%-12%. The output from the electrosurgical generator may influence the degree of coagulation and the rapidity of the incision, and thus rates of pancreatitis, hemorrhage, and perforation. Some modern generators incorporate feedback control to standardize output and automate the alternating cut and coagulation modes.

Arterioportal fistula causing acute pancreatitis and hemobilia after liver biopsy.

We report the case of a 49-year-old patient who developed hemobilia and acute pancreatitis from an arterioportal fistula after a percutaneous liver biopsy, and we analyze diagnostic testing and management based on a concise review of the available literature. Hemobilia can present as late as 10 days after liver biopsy. Acute pancreatitis is a rare complication of hemobilia.
