The stratum corneum (SC) forms the main part of the permeability barrier of the skin. In mice and in humans, cutaneous barrier disruption can be generated by removing the SC with tape stripping (TS) and the skin barrier function can be assessed by measurement of transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The aim of the present study was to characterize the skin barrier restoration in the dog following mechanical disruption and to analyse the correlation between the skin barrier recovery and TEWL measurement.

Testing judgement biases of animals may provide insight into their affective states; however important questions about methodologies need to be answered. This experiment investigated the effect of repeated testing using unreinforced, ambiguous cues on the response of sheep to a go/no-go judgement bias test. Fifteen sheep were trained to differentiate between two locations, reinforced respectively with feed (positive) or with the presentation of a dog (negative).

A randomised, single-blinded, positively controlled, field trial for weight loss in obese client-owned cats was undertaken to look at novel diets and dietary strategies that could improve owner compliance and, therefore, success of feline weight loss programmes. Three dietary strategies were evaluated: strategy A used a novel dry high fibre ration; strategy B used ready-prepared portions of dry and moist food; strategy C used an existing commercial dry high fibre ration fed with a measuring cup. Cats were assessed at weeks 4, 12 and 20, and adjustments to the energy allocation made if required.

New arylidene-thiazolidinediones (ATZDs) were synthesized and evaluated in the alloxan-induced hyperglycemia mice model. The molecular target taken into consideration is the nuclear PPAR-gamma whose crystallographic structure is available on the PDB database as 2PRG. Thus the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic activities of compounds were compared with the result of their docking after removal of the co-crystallized ligand present in the 2PRG structure.

Beta-lactams use aqueous channels of porins to penetrate Gram-negative bacteria. The L3 loop of Escherichia coli OmpF porin is a key feature that actively contributes to both channel size and electrostatic properties.
