Glaucoma has a significant impact on quality of life. Here, we aimed to evaluate the influence of a reduction in glaucoma medications on quality of life and patient satisfaction after phacoemulsification combined with the Xen gel stent. We carried out a cross-sectional survey of patients who underwent phacoemulsification with the Xen gel stent at the Medical University of Graz, Austria.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to investigate the effects of smoking on corneal endothelial health in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) compared to healthy subjects, focusing on cell density and morphology.
  • - It included 200 participants divided into four groups: diabetic smokers, diabetic nonsmokers, healthy smokers, and healthy nonsmokers, and utilized specular microscopy for analysis.
  • - Results showed that diabetic smokers had the lowest endothelial cell density and thicker corneas, indicating that smoking worsens the damage caused by diabetes to eye health.

In the light of an increased use of premium intraocular lenses (IOL), such as EDOF IOLs, multifocal IOLs or toric IOLs even minor intraoperative complications such as decentrations or an IOL tilt, will hamper the visual performance of these IOLs. Thus, the post-operative analysis of cataract surgeries to detect even minor intraoperative deviations that might explain a lack of a post-operative success becomes more and more important. Up-to-now surgical videos are evaluated by just looking at a very limited number of intraoperative data sets, or as done in studies evaluating the pupil changes that occur during surgeries, in a small number intraoperative picture only.

Background: To report a case of uveitis and neuroretinal detachment in a patient treated with Trametinib and Dabrafenib due to metastatic cutaneous melanoma stage IV.

Case Presentation: We evaluated slit lamp examination, fundoscopy, optical coherence tomography, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography in a 66 years old man suffering visual loss. Fundoscopy showed serous neuroretinal detachment of the fovea accompanied with white spots surrounding the fovea in both eyes.

Purpose: Interleukin 6 (IL-6) plays a crucial role in both adaptive and innate immunity. The rs1800795 gene polymorphism of IL-6 is associated with various autoimmune diseases, like multiple sclerosis.

Methods: 134 patients with HLAB27 positive iridocyclitis, 84 patients with intermediate uveitis, 132 controls, and 65 HLAB27 positive controls were recruited for the present case-control study.

Article Synopsis
  • The deaths of 5 children from posttonsillectomy haemorrhage in Austria spurred a national conversation and the creation of new guidelines for tonsil surgery focused on patient safety.
  • A study was conducted involving 6,765 patients under 18 years old to assess the incidence of postoperative bleeding after tonsil surgeries, revealing a 15% complication rate for tonsillectomy versus 2.3% for tonsillotomy, with risks increasing with age.
  • The findings indicated a shift towards more tonsillotomies in children under 6 since 2007, along with recommendations for overnight hospital observation for patients experiencing any bleeding after surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore the link between different types of postoperative pain and the risk of bleeding after tonsillectomy in 335 patients.
  • Researchers identified five distinct pain types, with types I and II showing decreasing pain levels, while types III, IV, and V exhibited increasing pain and higher bleeding risks.
  • The findings indicate that patients experiencing severe or escalating pain shortly after surgery are at a greater risk of hemorrhage.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between coagulopathy (a bleeding disorder) and postoperative hemorrhage risk in adults undergoing tonsillectomy, with specific hypotheses about the risks associated with personal history and laboratory screenings for coagulopathy.
  • Analyzing data from 3,041 tonsillectomy patients over nine months, the study found that a positive history of coagulopathy significantly increased the risk of postoperative hemorrhage, while laboratory screening did not show a significant correlation.
  • The conclusion emphasizes the importance of evaluating a patient's history of coagulopathy before surgery, as it doubles the risk of postoperative hemorrhage compared to those without such a history.

Article Synopsis
  • The study introduces a new classification system for categorizing the severity of postoperative hemorrhage following tonsillectomy, tonsillotomy, and adenoidectomy, and aims to identify risk factors contributing to the frequency and severity of these bleeding episodes.
  • Conducted as a multicenter cohort study in Austria from October 2009 to June 2010, it analyzed data from 9,405 patients and recorded various surgical details alongside instances of postoperative bleeding.
  • The findings revealed that minor bleeding episodes significantly increase the likelihood of severe bleeding, with higher rates observed in adults, those undergoing tonsillectomy, and specific surgical techniques, among other risk factors.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the actual rate of postoperative bleeding (haemorrhage) in community patients undergoing tonsil surgeries compared to hospital recorded rates.
  • Data was collected from 695 patients, with 407 responding to a questionnaire, revealing that 24.6% experienced some form of bleeding, but only 19.4% of those cases were documented by hospitals.
  • The overall estimated haemorrhage rate was 21.4%, indicating that relying solely on hospital records would underestimate the true incidence of bleeding after tonsil operations.
