Dampened neural activity and abolition of epileptic-like activity in cortical slices by active ingredients of spices.

Active ingredients of spices (AIS) modulate neural response in the peripheral nervous system, mainly through interaction with TRP channel/receptors. The present study explores how different AIS modulate neural response in layer 5 pyramidal neurons of S1 neocortex. The AIS tested are agonists of TRPV1/3, TRPM8 or TRPA1.

Repeat sternotomy in congenital heart surgery: no longer a risk factor.

Background: The risk of repeat sternotomy (RS) is often taken into account when making clinical management decisions. Current literature on RS suggests a risk of approximately 5% to 10% for major morbidity. We sought to establish the true risk of RS in a contemporary pediatric series.

Naja Kaouthia: two cases of Asiatic cobra envenomations.

Envenomation from cobra bites causes major morbidity and mortality in Asia and Africa but rarely in the United States. We describe two patients bitten by the Asiatic Cobra (Naja Kaouthia)--both successfully treated in the emergency department. Patient 1 was a 23-year-old woman bitten in the buttock by her cobra.
