The transcription factor Aristaless-related X-linked gene () is a monogenic factor in early onset epileptic encephalopathies (EOEEs) and a fundamental regulator of early stages of brain development. However, expression persists in mature GABAergic neurons with an unknown role. To address this issue, we generated a conditional knockout (CKO) mouse in which postnatal was ablated in parvalbumin interneurons (PVIs).

In addition to its role in restricting plasticity, alterations in the PN are implicated in disorders such as epilepsy and schizophrenia. However, the time course of PN development is not known in humans.

The need to overcome this barrier is pressing because there are considerable anatomical, physiological, cognitive and behavioral differences between mice and higher mammalian species in which it is difficult to specifically target and manipulate genetically defined functional cell types. In particular, it is unclear the degree to which insights from mouse models can shed light on the neural mechanisms that mediate cognitive functions in higher species, including humans.

The perineuronal net (PN), a component of the neural extracellular matrix (ECM), primarily surrounds inhibitory interneurons and, under normal conditions, restricts synaptic reorganization. The objective of the current study was to explore the effects of status epilepticus (SE) on PNs in the adult hippocampus.

Therefore, accurate counseling requires that the surgeon quantifies patient expectations and early recovery of the treatment regimen with a method that minimizes interviewer bias. Preoperatively and 4 to 5 weeks after TKA, 285 patients (306 consecutive primary TKAs) responded to a survey consisting of customized questions, the Oxford score, the SF-12, and Knee Society scores on a handheld data acquisition device.
