Recent advances in antiviral therapy have improved outcomes in HIV-positive individuals co-infected with hepatitis B and C virus (HBV/HCV). Our aim was to assess prevalence and predictors of chronic liver disease (CLD) due to the metabolic syndrome (MS), alcohol and antiretrovirals (ARVs) use in HIV-monoinfected individuals. This was a retrospective cohort study (2005-2012).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the distribution of Chlamydia trachomatis genotypes among men who have sex with men (MSM) at the Brighton GUM Clinic, focusing on correlations with HIV status and other clinical variables.
  • Out of 1809 MSM participants, 112 (6.2%) tested positive for rectal Chlamydia, revealing 66 different genotypes with significant differences between HIV-negative and HIV-positive men.
  • The findings showed a higher diversity of C. trachomatis strains within this population compared to other cities, with prevalent genotypes including G, E, and D, and distinct clusters of genotypes associated with HIV status.

Objectives: The primary objective was to examine trends in new HIV diagnoses in a UK area of high HIV prevalence between 2000 and 2012 with respect to site of diagnosis and stage of HIV infection.

Design: Single-centre observational cohort study.

Setting: An outpatient HIV department in a secondary care UK hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify factors affecting long-term outcomes for patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) through retrospective analysis using survival statistics.
  • Among the 93 patients examined, the demographic details indicated a high mortality rate of 80.6%, with significant numbers dying during hospitalization and in follow-up; non-alcohol-related liver disease emerged as a critical predictor of mortality.
  • The conclusions highlighted the low one-year survival rate (34.4%) following SBP hospitalization and stressed the need for improved screening for liver disease types, especially with the rise in non-alcoholic liver conditions.

Aim: Calcineurin inhibitors are substrates for P-glycoprotein (P-gp), the expression of which is associated with ABCB1 C3435T polymorphism. Individual P-gp response to calcineurin inhibitor may be linked to nephrotoxicity or rejection. Tc-2-Methoxyisobutylisonitrile (Tc-MIBI) is also a P-gp substrate.

Objective: To evaluate the prognostic value of inflammation or granuloma after intravesical bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) treatment in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC).

Materials And Methods: Patients with NMIBC treated with intravesical BCG over a 5-year period were identified. The correlations between histopathological results and disease recurrence and progression were assessed, with survival analysis performed using the Kaplan-Meier method.
