Article Synopsis
  • Congenital dacryocystoceles are uncommon birth defects linked to blocked tear ducts, presenting symptoms like excessive tearing and swelling around the eye.
  • A new minimally invasive endoscopic procedure was tested on 19 infants and young children, focusing on resecting the affected tissue without further manipulating the lacrimal duct, aiming to reduce complications.
  • The treatment was effective, with a recurrence in only two older patients, while the rest showed no issues post-surgery, suggesting this method is beneficial but may be less successful in older children with previous infections.

Purpose: Musculoskeletal complaints and fatigue are commonly described symptoms in daily work of ear nose and throat surgeons using a microscope. Long ear surgical procedures are associated with prolonged microscope use, which can lead to unconsciously tense and uncomfortable body posture. The digital microscope RoboticScope allows visualization of surgical site through a Head-Mounted Display, independent from camera head and is therefore much easier on the back, as the sitting position can be adjusted flexibly.

Purpose: The primary objective of this study was to explore the potential disparity in postoperative fistula occurrence rates between patients who undergo (partial) lateral parotidectomy and those who undergo the extracapsular dissection technique for the management of benign parotid gland tumours.

Methods: A consecutive series of 363 patients treated with (partial) lateral parotidectomy and extracapsular dissection technique for benign parotid gland tumours at one tertiary centre between 2018 and 2022 were included. To evaluate the impact of the surgical technique and possible other risk factors (tumour location, tumour size, Body Mass Index, age, smoking, diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension) for the development of fistulas, multivariate logistic regression analyses using backward lection were applied to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95%-confidence intervals (CIs).

Introduction: Bacterial biofilm formation on medical devices, such as Cochlear implants (CI), can lead to chronic infections. Not only the inner parts of the implant but also the externally located headpiece might be associated with prolonged superficial skin eczema resulting in the inability of wearing the headpiece. In this study, the surface of three CI headpieces from different manufacturers were examined for bacterial biofilm formation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare condition that leads to dilated blood vessels and has been linked to a higher prevalence of infections and allergies in affected individuals.
  • - In a study, 430 patients with HHT completed a survey, revealing that they experienced significantly more allergies, particularly type I allergies, along with a higher incidence of infections like sinusitis and pulmonary infections, compared to their non-affected counterparts.
  • - The findings highlight the need for increased awareness and recommendations for patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations (PAVMs) to take prophylactic antibiotics, as many do not do so despite their higher risk of complications.

Article Synopsis
  • A postal survey was conducted among 161 German ENT departments to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness and complication rates of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) and core needle biopsy (CNB) in the thyroid gland, salivary glands, and lymph nodes.
  • The response rate was 45%, with many clinics not performing these procedures due to a lack of pathologist expertise.
  • FNA was more commonly used than CNB, achieving 63% meaningful findings for FNA and 83% for CNB, with very few cases reporting potential tumor cell spread, indicating varying practices across Germany.

For practical reasons, in many studies PD-L1 expression is measured by combined positive score (CPS) from a single tumor sample. This does not reflect the heterogeneity of PD-L1 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We investigated the extent and relevance of PD-L1 expression heterogeneity in HNSCC analyzing primary tumors and recurrences (LRs), as well as metastases.

Background: Due to heterogeneous data, the indication for elective neck dissection (END) in patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx and oropharynx (HPSCC and OPSCC) in stages T1/2N0 is somewhat unclear. Therefore, in this multicenter study, we performed detailed analysis of the metastatic behavior of HPSCC and OPSCC.

Material And Methods: The nodal metastatic patterns of 262 HPSCC and OPSCC patients who had undergone surgery was retrospectively investigated.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) induces organ dysfunction caused by malnutrition, including liver damage leading to a rise in transaminases due to hepatocyte damage. The underlying pathophysiology of starvation-induced liver damage is poorly understood. We investigate the effect of a 25% body weight reduction on murine livers in a mouse model and examine possible underlying mechanisms of starvation-induced liver damage.

Introduction: For the diagnosis of Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), clinical procedures such as tympanometry, micro-otoscopy, and maneuvers according to Toynbee and Valsalva only allow an indirect assessment for the moment. With a prevalence of up to 5%, the selection of patients with ETD and its subtypes is clinically relevant. Dynamic methods of Eustachian tube function assessment include a hypo/hyperbaric pressure chamber and Estève's tubomanometer (TMM).

Patients with HPV-localized head and neck cancer (HNC) show inferior outcomes after surgery and radiochemotherapy compared to HPV-associated cancers. The underlying mechanisms remain elusive, but differences in immune status and immune activity may be implicated. In this study, we analyzed immune profiles of CD8 T cells and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSC) in HPV versus HPV disease.

The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β)/ALK1/ENG signaling pathway maintains quiescent state of endothelial cells, but at the same time, it regulates neutrophil functions. Importantly, mutations of this pathway lead to a rare autosomal disorder called hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), characterized with abnormal blood vessel formation (angiogenesis). As neutrophils are potent regulators of angiogenesis, we investigated how disturbed TGF-β/ALK1/ENG signaling influences angiogenic properties of these cells in HHT.
