Case report of a patient equipped with an osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis in both eyes (left in 1968 and right in 1971). The left eye was recently enucleated because of unbearable pain, in an eye without light perception since 20 years. The histology shows an ancient retinal detachment and an eye completely filled with blood.

The first three inhibitors, on the other hand, inhibited the activity in the choroid extract, but not in the retina/retinal pigment epithelium extract, after 3 hr of incubation. Both extracts contained one insoluble and two soluble isoenzymes.

A method of intravitreous microdialysis in vivo is used to measure the vitreal concentration of catecholamines and their metabolites after laser panphotocoagulation of rabbit retina. Noradrenaline, dopamine and dihydroxyphenylacetic acid could be measured. No significant immediate effects of laser coagulation on their concentration could be demonstrated.

A microdialysis system with a removable probe and a fixed scleral entry port is presented. The probe can be inserted several times with minimal trauma, permitting repeated sampling in one animal. The functioning of the setup is illustrated by the measurement of dopamine, dihydroxyphenyl acetic acid, and noradrenaline in the vitreous of healthy rabbits under physiological conditions.

Two cases of pneumococcal sepsis, meningitis and unilateral endophthalmitis after total splenectomy are described. The first patient, a 9-year-old girl, had severe panuveitis complicated by traction retinal detachment, eventually requiring vitrectomy. Due to large chorioretinal scars the visual recovery was poor.

The indications for two types of pulsed Nd: YAG lasers in the treatment of vitreous pathology are reviewed. A series of 94 eyes from 93 patients were treated with the mode-locked system and 72 eyes from 71 patients were treated with the Q-switched system. A classification of vitreous pathology with prognostic value for the efficacy of treatment of both lasers is established.

Rabbit retinas were treated with low-intensity laser coagulation at five different wavelengths. Using an indirect immunocytochemical method, the retinas were stained for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) at 2, 4, 21 and 32 days after coagulation such that we could follow GFAP expression in the Müller cells during retinal repair. GFAP-positive staining was found in the end feet of the Müller cells at 2 days after laser coagulation.

After coagulation (1, 4 and 28 days), the retinas were stained for GABA, using a direct biotin-avidin-horseradish peroxidase immunocytochemical method. These time intervals were chosen with regard to the existing knowledge of retinal repair.

Hemorrhages in the premacular bursa may cause an important loss of the visual acuity due to their localization. Several treatments, going from a conservative attitude to prompt vitrectomy, have been proposed. Three cases of premacular hemorrhage, treated by Nd-YAG laser puncture, are reported.

A case of acute tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome (TINU syndrome) in an elderly woman is reported. The present case demonstrates that this entity originally observed in children, and more recently in adults, may also occur in the elderly. The aetiology and treatment are briefly discussed.

A case is reported of a premacular retrohyaloid hemorrhage bulging into the bursa premacularis, due to a macroaneurysm secondary to hypertension. The Q-switched Nd-YAG laser is used to puncture the posterior hyaloid and drain the blood. A fast and full visual recovery is observed.

The concurrent fundus lesions are discussed and the ocular results of two different groups of patients are presented. A first group of 12 patients underwent an endarterectomy for their specific ocular complaints, while a second group of 15 patients with ocular symptoms associated with carotid lesions were treated conservatively.

Three eyes with preretinal macular fibrosis (PMF) were treated with the Q-switched Nd-YAG laser. The PMF was idiopathic in two eyes and associated with a vitreous hemorrhage, due to ocular trauma, in the third eye. The three eyes had in common a partial posterior vitreous detachment with vitreous traction on the macula.
