Introduction: In a worldwide aging population with a high prevalence of motor and cognitive impairment, it is paramount to improve knowledge about underlying mechanisms of motor and cognitive function and their interplay in the aging processes.
Methods: We measured prefrontal cerebral blood flow (CBF) using functional diffuse correlation spectroscopy during motor and dual-task. We aimed to compare CBF changes among 49 older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) during a dual-task paradigm (normal walk, 2- forward count walk, 3-backward count walk, obstacle negotiation, and heel tapping).
Background: The cortical microvascular cerebral blood flow response (CBF) to different changes in head-of-bed (HOB) position has been shown to be altered in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) by diffuse correlation spectroscopy (DCS) technique. However, the relationship between these relative ΔCBF changes and associated systemic blood pressure changes has not been studied, even though blood pressure is a major driver of cerebral blood flow.
Methods: Transcranial DCS data from four studies measuring bilateral frontal microvascular cerebral blood flow in healthy controls (n = 15), patients with asymptomatic severe internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA, n = 27), and patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS, n = 72) were aggregated.
Fluorescence tomography is a well-established methodology able to provide structural and functional information on the measured object. At optical wavelengths, the unpredictable scattering of light is often considered a problem to overcome, rather than a feature to exploit. Advances in disordered photonics have shed new light on possibilities offered by opaque materials, treating them as autocorrelation lenses able to create images and focus light.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe demonstrate the application of an extended field of view hybrid microscope, integrating distinct optical and photoacoustic (PA) contrast modes, for the precise three-dimensional anatomy delineation of the ciliary body/iris structures in healthy rabbit eyes ex vivo. The glutaraldehyde-induced autofluorescence and the intrinsic PA signals provided by each of the employed imaging modalities were characterized by a high spatial complementarity, offering thus rich morphological information regarding the pars plana and pars plicata ciliary body portions, the iris, as well as, the attached zonule fiber strands. The bimodal microscopy approach presented could find application on studies involving the ocular accommodation mechanism or pathological ciliary body conditions, as a powerful diagnostic technique contributing to the understanding of ocular physiology and function.
