Despite the widespread use of anticoagulant rodenticides in baits for controlling commensal rodent pests, their application is problematic due to secondary intoxication and increasing resistance. In contrast to studies on Western European house mice (Mus musculus domesticus), few resistance studies have focused on Eastern European house mice (M. musculus musculus), which have a western distribution boundary in the Czech Republic.

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) like arachidonic acid (ARA, 20:4n-6), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) constitute one-third to half of fish sperm lipids. Fish sperm is rich in phospholipid (PL)-primarily phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin. DHA is generally the most abundant LC-PUFA in each PL class, followed by competition between ARA and EPA.

Correlative imaging of cutaneous tumors provides additional information to the standard histopathologic examination. However, the joint progress in the establishment of analytical techniques, such as Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) in clinical practice is still limited. Their combination provides complementary information as it is also shown in our study in terms of major biotic (Ca, Mg, and P) and trace (Cu and Zn) elements.

The diagnosis of malignant melanoma, often an inconspicuous but highly aggressive tumor, is most commonly done by histological examination, while additional diagnostic methods on the level of elements and molecules are constantly being developed. Several studies confirmed differences in the chemical composition of healthy and tumor tissue. Our study presents the potential of the LIBS (Laser-Induced-Breakdown Spectroscopy) technique as a diagnostic tool in malignant melanoma (MM) based on the quantitative changes in elemental composition in cancerous tissue.

This is the first study determining the effects of bath exposure to fulvic acid, a humic substance, on the skin mucosal immunity of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Humic substances have recently been gaining attention for their increasing concentrations in aquatic ecosystems and their use as supplements in sustainable aquaculture. This study demonstrated that water exposure to fulvic acid at concentrations of 5 mg C/L and 50 mg C/L increased lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase activities in the mucus by approximately 2-fold and 2.

The sensitivity to stress and its impact on immunity are supposedly related to a fish's personality. In the present study, European perch (Perca fluviatilis) were exposed to an open-field and a novel-object test to identify distinctive shy and bold individuals. This series of cognitive tests revealed clear differences between proactive individuals with pronounced exploration behavior (bold personality) and reactive individuals that took a freeze-hide position (shy personality).

Background: Khapra beetle (Trogoderma granarium Everts), one of the most important quarantine pests globally, is capable of causing severe infestation and huge economic loss to stored grain, and its interception rate has increased in major global trade countries over the past few years. However, difficulties remain in distinguishing this species with similar ones. In order to assist border ports and warehouses in khapra beetle's effective rapid identification as well as pest control at the early stages of monitoring or interception, we herein developed a new and rapid visual detection assay for T.

The widespread use of silica nanoparticles (SiO-NPs) in various industries, including chemical polishing, cosmetics, varnishes, medical, and food products, has increased the risk of their release into aquatic ecosystems. The toxic effects of small-size SiO-NPs on the reproductive performance of zebrafish (Danio rerio) have yet to be widely studied. This study aimed to investigate the impact of chronic exposure to small-sized (35 ± 6 nm) SiO-NPs on adult zebrafish through waterborne exposure to concentrations of 5 (SNP5), 10 (SNP10), 15 (SNP15), and 20 (SNP20) μg/L of SiO2-NPs for 28 days.

Avian vectors, such as ducks, swans and geese, are important dispersers of plant propagules. Until recently, it was thought that small vegetative propagules were reliant on adherence to vectors and are unlikely to survive passage through the avian digestive tract. Here, we conclusively demonstrate that metabolically active angiosperms can survive passage through the digestive tract of a large-bodied waterbird.

Aquaculture will become an important food production sector for humans in the coming decades. However, disease outbreaks can be considered a significant obstacle to continually developing aquaculture. Plant powders and extracts are natural feed additives that, due to their bioactive compounds, including phenolic compounds, proteins, vitamins, and minerals, have antistress, antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal effects on fish.

Duckweed (Lemnaceae) can support the development of freshwater aquaculture if used as extractive species in Integrated MultiTrophic Aquaculture (IMTA) systems. These aquatic plants have the advantage of producing protein-rich biomass that has several potential uses. On the contrary, other biological compartments, such as microalgae and bacteria, present in the water and competing with duckweed for light and nutrients cannot be harvested easily from the water.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the potential of replacing fishmeal with defatted black soldier fly meal in pikeperch aquafeeds, assessing its effects on growth, nutrient digestibility, fillet quality, and sustainability over an 84-day trial.
  • Results showed that pikeperch fed diets with lower inclusion of insect meal (H0, H9, H18) performed better in growth, while H18 had lower organ-somatic indices, indicating variations in health metrics between groups.
  • The inclusion of insect meal negatively impacted nutrient digestibility and fish fillet quality, especially reducing n-3 fatty acids while increasing n-6 fatty acids, but concurrently lowered the environmental footprint of fish farming.
