Only limited data on concentrations of trace elements in the blood of avian species have been published. This information can play an important role in the conservation of endangered species and their protection from environmental pollutants and can also be clinically relevant in managed individuals. Some elements are essential for the health of the animals in human care, but little is known about expected concentrations for some of these elements.

Micropollutant removal from effluent of conventional wastewater treatment has recently become one of the most discussed topics in the design and operation of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This is due to the need to add a post-treatment step to the conventional processes to comply with stricter quality standards for effluents as outlined in the revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD). The adoption of on-site or decentralized greywater (GW) treatment in sustainable buildings using vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) is a promising direction.

Electrophoresis is a useful diagnostic tool for detecting inflammation, including inflammation associated with infectious diseases (eg, aspergillosis in penguins). To our knowledge, reference intervals are not available for plasma proteins via electrophoresis in Humboldt penguins (). Therefore, preliminary reference intervals for blood plasma proteins measured by capillary zone electrophoresis were calculated for Humboldt penguins from a single zoological collection, and possible differences between the sexes and the ages of the birds were evaluated.

This work introduces a new sustainable alternative of powdered activated carbon (PAC) - magnetically harvestable and reusable after regeneration via inductive heating - for the adsorptive removal of organic micropollutants (OMP) from secondary wastewater effluents. For this purpose, two commercial PACs - lignite "L" (1187 m/g) and coconut "C"-based (1524 m/g) - were modified with magnetic iron oxide following two different synthesis approaches: infiltration ("infiltr") and surface deposition ("depos") route. The resulting magnetic powdered activated carbons (mPAC) and their precursor PACs were fully characterized before application.

Nutrient recovery from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) for hydroponic cultivation holds promise for closing the nutrient loop and meeting rising food demands. However, most studies focus on solid products for soil-based agriculture, thus raising questions about their suitability for hydroponics. In this study, we address these questions by performing the first in-depth assessment of the extent to which state-of-the-art nutrient recovery processes can generate useful products for hydroponic application.

Reference intervals for clinical chemistry and haematology analytes are essential for the interpretation of blood results, but limited data are available for Humboldt penguins () in zoological collections as well as in the wild. The aim of the present study was therefore to establish reference intervals for a series of clinical chemistry and haematology analytes in a single zoological population of Humboldt penguins. Furthermore, possible variations of the analytes influenced by the age and sex of the individuals were investigated.

Introduction: Despite current clinical guidelines recommending suboccipital decompressive craniectomy (SDC) in cerebellar infarction when patients present with neurological deterioration, the precise definition of neurological deterioration remains unclear and accurate timing of SDC can be challenging. The current study aimed at characterizing whether clinical outcomes can be predicted by the GCS score immediately prior to SDC and whether higher GCS scores are associated with better clinical outcomes.

Methods: In a single-center, retrospective analysis of 51 patients treated with SDC for space-occupying cerebellar infarction, clinical and imaging data were evaluated at the time points of symptom onset, hospital admission, and preoperatively.

Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) are a frugivorous species native to Central and South America. Despite their importance as a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens and their popularity in zoological collection and as research models, there are relatively few reports on non-zoonotic diseases of bats. Mites of the genus Demodex are obligate commensals of the skin of a range of mammals, are highly host-specific and are not associated with clinical disease when present in low numbers.

The most common cause of anemia is iron deficiency, followed by anemia of chronic disease, which is due to an inflammatory reaction in chronic diseases such as heart failure, renal failure, rheumatoid diseases and cancer. Also from the therapeutic point of view, it is useful to divide iron deficiency anemia into two forms: absolute and functional iron deficiency. Absolute iron deficiency is characterized by low iron stores and low total iron.

Environmental pollutants and their effect on wildlife health play an important role in the conservation of endangered species and can be clinically relevant in captive animals too. Data on relevant concentrations of trace elements in captive birds with no known exposures are rare. For this study, silver, arsenic, gold, barium, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, mercury, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, thallium, selenium, and zinc were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in lithium heparinized plasma samples from 18 Humboldt penguins at 2 zoological collections in Germany.

Purpose: The WHO 2016 re-classification of myeloproliferative neoplasms resulted in a separation of essential thrombocythemia (ET) from the pre-fibrotic and fibrotic (overt) phases of primary myelofibrosis (MF). This study reports on a chart review conducted to evaluate the real life approach regarding clinical characteristics, diagnostic assessment, risk stratification and treatment decisions for MPN patients classified as ET or MF after implementation of the WHO 2016 classification.

Methods: In this retrospective chart review, 31 office-based hematologists/oncologists and primary care centers in Germany participated between April 2021 and May 2022.

Background: Dysphagia is a frequent symptom in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Endovascular treatment (EVT) has become the standard of care for acute stroke secondary to large vessel occlusion. Although standardized guidelines for poststroke dysphagia (PSD) management exist, they do not account for this setting in which patients receive EVT under general anesthesia.

(Background): Effective prevention strategies and acute therapies have been established and distributed in recent years to reduce the global burden of stroke. However, beyond randomized clinical trials, limited data exist on the real-world impact of these measures. Our goal was to analyze whether the stroke-associated disability in the population decreased over time based on a state-wide stroke registry analysis.

Background And Purpose: This study evaluates the quantitative measurability of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), neurofilament light chain (NfL), ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 (UCH-L1) and total tau (t-tau) in urine of patients with acute cerebral damage.

Methods: Serum and urine samples were prospectively collected from patients with an acute ischemic stroke or intracerebral hemorrhage (target group) and compared to healthy subjects (control group); samples were measured using ultrasensitive single-molecule arrays (Simoa®). Glomerular barrier function was assessed based on albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR); biomarker-creatinine ratios were calculated for correction of urine dilution.

Background: Endovascular therapy (EVT) in acute ischemic stroke has been widely established. Globally, stroke patients are transferred either directly to a thrombectomy center (DC) or a peripheral stroke unit with a "drip-and-ship" (DS) model. We aimed to determine differences between the DS and DC paradigms after EVT of acute stroke patients with large-vessel-occlusion (LVO) in the database of the German Stroke Registry (GSR).

Background: The ongoing expansion of the cosmetic armamentarium of facial rejuvenation fails to uncover the inherent risks of cosmetic interventions. Informed consent to all risks of cosmetic filler injections and potential sequelae, including ocular and neurological complications, should be carefully ensured. We present two cases of complications following facial hyaluronic acid filler injections.

(1) Intravenous thrombolysis with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in patients with acute ischemic stroke is limited because of several contraindications. In routine clinical practice, patients with a recent stroke are typically not treated with rt-PA in case of a recurrent ischemic event. The same applies to its use in the context of pulmonary artery embolism and myocardial infarction with a recent stroke.
