Horizontal binocular eye movements of four subjects were recorded with the scleral sensor coil--revolving magnetic field technique while they fixated a natural target, whose distance was varied in a normally illuminated room. The distance of the target relative to the head of the subject was changed in three ways: (a) the target was moved manually by the experimenter; (b) the target was moved manually by the subject; (c) the target remained stationary while the subject moved his upper torso towards and away from the target. The rate of change of target distance was varied systematically in four levels, ranging from 'slow' to 'very fast', corresponding to changes in target vergence from about 10 degrees s-1 to about 100 degrees s-1.

Dendritic cells can pick up antigens in the tissues and move to lymphoid organs, through which T cells continually recirculate. An analysis of plasmids containing the BK virus origin revealed that sequences within the 68-bp enhancer are required for DNA replication as well as transcription of the early promoter in COS-1 cells. Origins with a single 68-bp repeat replicated as efficiently as did those with three repeats when transfected into COS-1 cells.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe feline T-cell lymphotropic lentivirus (feline immunodeficiency virus) is a recently described feline-specific retrovirus that can produce chronic immunodeficiency-like disorders in cats. A microdilution plate format enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay has been developed to detect the presence of antibody to the virus in feline serum or plasma. Temporal studies performed with experimentally infected animals show that seroconversion can be demonstrated 3 to 4 weeks after exposure to the virus.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe have studied the control and significance of IL-1 production in human leukocyte cultures during accessory cell-dependent, T lymphocyte mitogenesis using sensitive bioassays and immunolabeling techniques. In primary antigen-dependent systems like the MLR, IL-1 production was not detected in accessory cells (monocytes, dendritic cells) or T cells, suggesting that it is not an early product in these responses. However, monocytes could be induced to make IL-1 after interacting with sensitized antigen-specific T cells.

To determine the magnitude for potential misdiagnosis in applying this notion clinically, we analyzed 20 consecutive cases of regular wide QRS tachycardia in conscious adult patients (mean age, 64 years). The most common heart disease was atherosclerotic (75%), with an associated history of remote myocardial infarction in 73% of the cases.

A method was first developed to isolate populations of large, adherent, thymic dendritic cells that were greater than 90% pure. While several reports have focused on the effects of recombinant molecules on the development of CTL, the natural protein responsible for CTL development that is produced by normal leukocytes has not been conclusively identified. A 24 kD native protein with CDF activity was enriched from leukocyte conditioned medium and neutralizing antibodies were produced.

We found that dendritic cells were active and perhaps essential. Single CD4+ lymphocytes could be cloned with 80% efficiency, and CD8+ cells with 50-60% efficiency if 10(3) syngeneic or allogeneic dendritic cells were added.

The two populations clearly differed in phenotype; anti-Ig blasts were FcR+, B220+, 33D1-, while dendritic cells were FcR-, B220-, 33D1+. In this study, the clinical features and arrhythmic outcome of 43 survivors of VF without inducible VT at control programmed stimulation were examined. In 38 patients, factors that may have played a potentiating role in the genesis of VF included ischemia in 15, proarrhythmia in 18, rapid rate response to atrial fibrillation in 3 and acute alcoholism in 2.

The present study demonstrated that Gc allele frequencies in white homosexual men corresponded to those expected, regardless of HIV serology and related disease. Assignment of phenotype was not influenced by Gc complexing secondary to tissue damage, or the process of infection per se.

A population of B lymphocytes could be enriched to greater than 90% purity by isolating a low-density fraction on Percoll density gradients and then depleting T cells with a mixture of anti-Thy-1, CD4, and CD8 mAbs and complement.
