Background: Numerous studies reported a higher prevalence of polyneuropathy (PNP) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) compared to the general population. Importantly, PNP symptoms can aggravate both motor and sensory disturbances in PD patients and negatively impact the disease course. Recent analyses indicate distinct PNP patterns in PD.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how combining total body photography (TBP), digital dermoscopy (DD), and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) improves early detection of melanoma in high-risk patients compared to using only dermoscopy.
  • In the intervention group (IG), patients received regular 3D-TBP, DD, and RCM monitoring, resulting in more diagnoses of second primary melanomas and excised nevi than the control group (CG), which only used dermoscopy.
  • The results suggest that this combination of monitoring techniques not only detected more melanomas but also reduced the number needed to treat (NNT), demonstrating the effectiveness of advanced technologies in melanoma detection.

Background/objectives: To ensure that non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is completely removed in healthy tissue, micrographically controlled surgery (3D histology) is often performed, which can prolong the inpatient stay. This study examined ex vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (evRCM) for perioperative assessment of surgical margins, specifically in cases where re-excision was necessary due to incomplete removal of cutaneous tumor tissue.

Methods: NMSC re-excisions were evaluated using evRCM by a cutaneous surgeon, with retrospective review by an independent pathologist when results differed from histology.

Epithelioid glioblastoma (eGB), a very aggressive and rare brain tumour, is associated with a dismal median overall survival. Effective therapies for patients with eGB, particularly with leptomeningeal dissemination, are still lacking. Here, we describe a case of a 25-year-old male diagnosed with an intramedullary cervical tumour with subsequent leptomeningeal disease.

Article Synopsis
  • A study found that polyneuropathy (PNP) is common in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), affecting around 65.85% of participants at the start and deteriorating in 21.95% over 2 years.
  • The research included comprehensive evaluations and nerve conduction studies to assess PNP, which was linked to older age and more severe PD symptoms.
  • The findings highlight the need for more extensive studies to understand the relationship between PD and PNP, particularly the progression and underlying mechanisms involved.

Article Synopsis
  • Modern diagnostic techniques like 3D total body photography, digital dermoscopy, and reflectance confocal microscopy enhance melanoma diagnosis, especially for high-risk patients.
  • A study with 410 high-risk melanoma patients showed that combining these imaging methods led to the detection of more melanomas compared to regular skin exams, with 16 confirmed cases found during imaging consultations versus 7 in outpatient exams.
  • The imaging approach was more effective in detecting melanomas while significantly reducing the number needed to excise (NNE), indicating a better overall outcome in managing high-risk patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The text discusses a rare skin reaction, symmetrical drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema (SDRIFE), that can occur after taking corticosteroids, specifically prednisolone, as shown in four case studies from a German dermatology center.
  • The study involved allergy tests on patients, evaluating reactions to different corticosteroids and using classification systems to analyze potential cross-reactivity among them.
  • The findings suggest that while corticosteroid-induced type IV hypersensitivity reactions like SDRIFE are uncommon, they can happen, and individualized assessments are essential for managing these reactions effectively, including considering alternative treatments and the possible need for emergency corticosteroids.

Background: In functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA), luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels show high interindividual variability, which significantly limits their diagnostic value in differentiating FHA from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Our aim was to profile the LH:FSH ratio in a large sample of patients with well-defined FHA.

Methods: This observational study included all consecutive patients with FHA presenting to the Department of Gynecologic Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine, Medical University of Vienna, between January 2017 and August 2023.

Background: Treatment decisions in metastatic melanoma (MM) are highly dependent on patient preferences and require the patients' involvement. The complexity of treatment options with their individual advantages and disadvantages is often overwhelming. We therefore developed an online patient decision aid (PtDA) to facilitate shared decision making (SDM).

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease with involvement of skin and muscle that is classified as an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy. In addition to cutaneous lesions as well as weakness and atrophy of muscles, the heart and lungs are the major affected organs. DM occurs in association with malignant tumors in 20% of affected adults.

Cutaneous cystic lesions (n = 35) were examined with optical coherence tomography. Cysts were visible as a hyporeflective roundish area with a clear margin; in some cases, the epidermis was thinned. Epidermal cysts, trichilemmal cysts, and hidrocystomas had a linear margin representing the epithelium of the cyst, whereas mucoid pseudocysts showed no linear margin.

Objective: Autoimmunity seems to be present in a large proportion of women with spontaneous premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). Whether these women are at increased risk for autoimmune disease has not been determined to date. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate a large series of antibodies in order to shed more light into the autoimmune risk of POI women.

Purpose: Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) is due to hypothalamic dysregulation. Literature lacks data about prolactin in FHA women, although both prolactin levels and FHA are associated with stress. Moreover, polycystic ovarian morphology is common in FHA and there is an association between FHA and polycystic ovary syndrome.

Introduction: Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) is a cause of significant morbidity and mortality in high-risk individuals. Total body photography (TBP) is currently used to monitor melanocytic lesions in patients with high risk for melanoma. The authors examined if three-dimensional (3D)-TBP could be useful for diagnosis of NMSC.

Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) is a devastating complication of cancer with a particularly poor prognosis. Among solid tumours, malignant melanoma (MM) has one of the highest rates of metastasis to the leptomeninges, with approximately 10-15% of patients with advanced disease developing LMD. Tumour cells that metastasise to the brain have unique properties that allow them to cross the blood-brain barrier, evade the immune system, and survive in the brain microenvironment.

Psoriasis is frequently associated with the metabolic syndrome and occurs more often in obese individuals. In order to understand innate immune mechanisms mediating this inflammatory pattern we investigated expression of the chemokine and lipid scavenger receptor CXCL16 in patients with psoriasis and associated comorbidities. CXCL16 expression was enhanced on all monocyte subsets in psoriatic patients compared with healthy controls and positively correlated with psoriasis activity and severity index, body mass index and the risk for cardiovascular disease indicated by PROCAM score.
