A Case of Diastematomyelia Presenting With Minimal Neurologic Deficits in a Middle-Aged Patient.

Diastematomyelia is a rare congenital deformity of the spine in which the spinal cord is split into two hemicords along the sagittal plane. This condition belongs to the group of spinal dysraphisms, is more common in females, and is usually diagnosed prenatally or during childhood; rarely is it diagnosed in adults. We report a male patient in his 50s in which diastematomyelia of the thoracic spine was incidentally encountered after receiving a CT scan of the chest for shortness of breath.

Processing of a Subliminal Rebus during Sleep: Idiosyncratic Primary versus Secondary Process Associations upon Awakening from REM- versus Non-REM-Sleep.

Primary and secondary processes are the foundational axes of the Freudian mental apparatus: one horizontally as a tendency to associate, the primary process, and one vertically as the ability for perspective taking, the secondary process. Primary process mentation is not only supposed to be dominant in the unconscious but also, for example, in dreams. The present study tests the hypothesis that the mental activity during REM-sleep has more characteristics of the primary process, while during non-REM-sleep more secondary process operations take place.

Antenatal and postnatal depression in women with obesity: a systematic review.

Obesity and depression are prevalent complications during pregnancy and associated with severe health risks for the mother and the child. The co-occurrence of both conditions may lead to a particular high-risk group. This review provides a systematic overview of the association between pre-pregnancy obesity and antenatal or postnatal depression.

Randomized Controlled Trial of an Internet-Based Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment Program for Binge-Eating Disorder.

Binge-eating disorder (BED) is a prevalent health condition associated with obesity. Few people with BED receive appropriate treatment. Personal barriers include shame, fear of stigma, geographic distance to mental health services, and long wait-lists.

Childhood maltreatment and pre-pregnancy obesity: a comparison of obese, overweight, and normal weight pregnant women.

Pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity is associated with poor health outcomes for the mother and the child. General population studies suggest that childhood maltreatment is associated with obesity in adulthood. The aim of our study was to examine the association between pre-pregnancy overweight and obesity and a history of childhood abuse or neglect including different stages of severity of abuse and neglect.

[Child maltreatment in binge eating disorder: a systematic literature review].

Objective: This review is to provide a first overview about prevalences and associations of forms of child maltreatment in binge eating disorder (BED).

Methods: Systematic literature search in PubMed and Web of Science in December 2013. Terms considered were "binge eating disorder" AND "child* maltreatment", "child* abuse", "child* sexual abuse", "child* emotional abuse", "child* physical abuse", "child* emotional neglect" as well as "child* physical neglect".

Brief Internet-based intervention reduces posttraumatic stress and prolonged grief in parents after the loss of a child during pregnancy: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: The loss of a child during pregnancy causes significant psychological distress for many women and their partners, and may lead to long-lasting psychiatric disorders. Internet-based interventions using exposure techniques and cognitive restructuring have proved effective for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and prolonged grief. This study compared the effects of an Internet-based intervention for parents after prenatal loss with a waiting list condition (WLC).

[Working alliance in internet-based therapy for binge eating disorder].

Objective: Findings about the association between working alliance and therapy outcome in Internet-based treatments are contradictory. Evidence for the working alliance in Internet-based treatment for Binge Eating Disorder is still missing and can help to elucidate this question.

Methods And Results: In an Internet-based cognitive-behavioral intervention, working alliance (WAI-S, mid n = 59; post n = 49) and eating disorder symptoms (EDE-Q, n = 49) as therapy outcome were assessed.

Sexual abuse in bariatric surgery candidates: impact on weight loss after surgery: a systematic review.

Bariatric surgery is becoming more and more influential as efficient weight loss therapy for the morbidly obese. As many studies propose a relationship between sexual abuse and obesity in general, but especially with regard to weight regain after successful weight loss, sexual abuse might also have a crucial impact on the outcome of the surgical procedures. This review examines the literature comparing weight loss after bariatric surgery in sexually abused and non-abused individuals.

Perception of sleep and dreams in alcohol-dependent patients during detoxication and abstinence.

Aims: This study aims to investigate sleep quality and the subjective dream experience in alcohol-dependent patients during withdrawal and abstinence compared with healthy controls.

Methods: Thirty-seven patients with alcohol dependency and 35 healthy control subjects were asked to fill in several questionnaires and to give information about their subjective sleep and dream experiences. Twelve patients participated in a follow-up interview 4 weeks later.

Transection of the base of the tongue caused by penetrating injury.

Traumatic transection of the base of the tongue can be a life-threatening injury because of blood loss and airway obstruction. Airway control, hemostasis, and meticulous anatomic repair are necessary to prevent speech and airway dysfunction. Laryngeal injuries, when present, require these same principles.

Presacral drainage in penetrating extraperitoneal rectal injuries: is it necessary?

The objective was to evaluate the need for presacral drainage in low velocity penetrating rectal injury. Standard management of penetrating injuries to the extraperitoneal rectum from high velocity injury consists of debridement, diversion, drainage, and distal washout. A retrospective, descriptive review of penetrating rectal injury from 1983 to 1993 was undertaken.

Aortic injury in vehicular trauma.

A 5-year retrospective study of 530 motor vehicle fatalities revealed 105 aortic injuries occurring in 90 victims. These were reviewed to determine the injury patterns, circumstances, and mechanisms involved. In addition, the survival time, the driver's age and sex, the time of day of the accident, and the blood alcohol level were considered.

Tropical pyomyositis.

Although rare, tropical pyomyositis can result from staphylococcal bacteremia and should be considered in the different diagnosis of fever associated with extremity pain. The diagnosis is readily made with a CT scan. Treatment is primarily medical with surgery reserved for refractory abscesses.
